Leaving a trusted VPN on can keep eligible traffic routed through the VPN as you move between public or unfamiliar networks, reducing what local network observers can see and hiding your ordinary IP address from websites that receive traffic through the tunnel. It does not make you anonymous or protect every connection, and it means trusting the VPN provider with traffic that might otherwise pass through your internet provider.
What are the benefits of keeping a VPN on?
Continuous protection on unfamiliar networks
An always-connected VPN can spare you from remembering to enable it each time you join a network. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends using an available VPN on public wireless networks in its wireless security guidance. A VPN can make it harder for other people on the local network to observe traffic routed through the tunnel, but it is not a substitute for secure websites, device updates, or careful handling of sensitive information.
Automatic connection is a feature of particular platforms and services, not a guarantee that every VPN behaves the same way. Apple says managed Always On VPN can remove the need for users to turn on protection when they connect to mobile or Wi-Fi networks; Google describes VPN by Google as connecting automatically on networks. These are descriptions of those implementations, not proof that all VPNs offer identical coverage.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Hiding your ordinary IP address
For traffic that passes through the VPN, websites generally see the VPN server’s IP address rather than your device’s ordinary IP address. Google says VPN by Google can prevent websites from using the device’s IP address to find its location. This is not anonymity: account sign-ins, cookies, GPS access, app permissions, and other data can still identify or locate you.

Is it safe to leave a VPN on?
It can be a sensible choice if you trust the service and understand what it routes. A personal VPN changes which provider handles some of your traffic; it does not eliminate the need to trust a provider. CISA’s Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance (December 2024) warns: “Personal VPNs simply shift residual risks from your internet service provider (ISP) to the VPN provider, often increasing the attack surface.” CISA also cautions that some free and commercial VPN providers have questionable security and privacy policies. That warning concerns personal VPNs; an employer-required VPN is a separate managed arrangement.
Consider the provider’s privacy and security practices before enabling a personal VPN continuously. A VPN is not automatically safer just because it is on.

Does a VPN protect every connection?
No. Coverage varies by VPN service, device, and configuration. As one service-specific example, Google says VPN by Google does not protect all network data. Its listed exceptions include tethering, push notifications, Wi-Fi calling and certain other IMS services, work-profile app traffic, and app traffic routed directly over Wi-Fi or cellular. Those exceptions should not be assumed to apply to other VPNs; check the documentation for the service and device you use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Configurations can also route only selected apps or work traffic instead of the whole device. A full-device tunnel can cover more eligible traffic, while a per-app VPN can keep organizational apps separate from personal use. Neither label alone tells you exactly what is covered: the service’s routing rules and exclusions matter.

What happens if the VPN disconnects?
It depends on the failure setting. With ordinary fallback, the device may resume using its regular network connection, so traffic can continue but no longer pass through the VPN. A fail-closed or lockdown setting blocks traffic that would otherwise leave outside the tunnel. That can reduce exposure if the VPN fails, but it can also leave you without internet access until the tunnel returns.
- Android: The system offers “Block connections without VPN” for supported configurations. Android Enterprise documentation describes blocking non-VPN connections and managing app allowlists or denylists. If the VPN stops working, Android Help says a notification remains.
- Managed Apple devices: Apple says supported Always On VPN configurations drop all IP traffic when the tunnels are down. This behavior applies to the documented managed setup, not every consumer VPN configuration.
Choose the failure behavior based on what matters for your situation: uninterrupted connectivity or preventing traffic from falling back outside the VPN.

Does always-on VPN drain battery or use more data?
There is no general battery-drain or speed-loss figure established for VPNs as a category. Actual effects depend on the device, network, VPN implementation, and usage. Google says anonymous usage data for VPN by Google may include battery impact, but its documentation does not give a numeric estimate.

Google Fi says VPN by Google increases data usage and may move traffic to cellular when Wi-Fi is unusable, allowing a download to continue over mobile data. That behavior is specific to Google Fi’s service; check your own VPN and mobile plan rather than assuming all VPNs switch networks in the same way.

Why can’t I enable always-on VPN on my phone?
Android
Android supports always-on VPN, but the option can depend on how the VPN was configured and on the device. Google’s Android Help notes that a VPN set up through an app may not show the system always-on option. Android Enterprise documents always-on VPN for Android 7.0 and later, including managed configurations that can start the VPN at boot and keep it running while the device or work profile is on.
For a configured connection, the general path is Settings > Network & internet > VPN, then select the VPN and enable Always-on VPN if the option appears. Menu wording and availability can vary by device and Android version. The “Block connections without VPN” setting may also be available there; check the device’s current settings and VPN documentation.
Apple devices
Apple’s Always On VPN is an organizational feature for supported devices managed and supervised through specified tools, not a universal consumer switch. Apple separately documents VPN On Demand, which connects under configured conditions, and per-app VPN, which can route selected organizational app traffic. See Apple’s VPN deployment overview and VPN security guidance for the documented options. If a device belongs to your employer or school, follow its configuration and policy rather than trying to replace its VPN settings.
Always-on, on-demand, or per-app: which fits?
| Option | How it works | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Always-on | Eligible traffic is routed through the VPN continuously; a strict configuration can block traffic if the tunnel is down. | You want continuity across networks or an organization requires the connection. |
| On-demand | The device connects under configured conditions, such as a network or domain rule. | You need a VPN only for particular networks, destinations, or policies. |
| Per-app | Only selected apps, often organizational apps, use the VPN. | Work traffic should be separated from personal traffic. |
Apple documents on-demand, per-app, and managed Always On VPN options for organizational deployment. Android Enterprise likewise supports management rules for apps and non-VPN connections. The names describe connection policy, not an assurance that every kind of device traffic is included.
Should you leave your VPN on all the time?
For a trustworthy personal VPN, leaving it connected can be useful if you frequently use public or unfamiliar networks and want eligible traffic routed through the tunnel without having to remember to connect. Before making it permanent, verify the provider’s practices, understand which traffic is excluded, and decide whether you prefer fallback connectivity or blocking traffic when the VPN fails. If the VPN is required by work or school, use the organization’s settings and instructions.
