Usually, yes—if your Windows 11 PC supports Credential Guard and the sign-ins and applications you rely on continue to work. It uses virtualization-based security to make selected Windows credentials harder for malware to steal. It does not protect every account or replace other security measures, and older VPN, Wi-Fi, or remote-access setups can lose single sign-on or require you to enter credentials again.

Check whether Credential Guard is already running before changing anything. Its availability depends on Windows edition, licensing, hardware, and configuration, so the Windows 11 label alone does not tell you whether your PC has it.

What Credential Guard protects—and what it does not

Credential Guard uses virtualization-based security (VBS) to isolate selected secrets from the ordinary Windows operating system. These include NTLM password hashes and Kerberos Ticket Granting Tickets (TGTs). A protected process, LSAIso.exe, handles the isolated secrets while Windows’ Local Security Authority communicates with it. The goal is to make those secrets harder for malware in Windows—even malware with administrator privileges—to extract. Microsoft describes the feature and its protection model; its technical explanation of how it works provides more detail.

This protection has limits. Credential Guard does not protect local accounts or Microsoft Accounts, software-managed credentials outside the feature’s protection, or the Active Directory database on domain controllers. Some protocols can also prompt for or use credentials stored in Windows Vault in ways Credential Guard does not protect. It is a targeted defense for certain Windows credentials, not a universal password vault or a guarantee against credential theft. Microsoft lists these limitations in its overview.

Is Credential Guard available or already enabled on your PC?

Do not assume that every Windows 11 PC has Credential Guard, or that the feature is off simply because you never enabled it yourself. Microsoft says eligible Windows 11 version 22H2 and later devices may have it enabled by default when licensing, hardware, and software requirements are met and it has not been explicitly disabled. Prior Credential Guard history can complicate the picture on some Windows 11 Pro and Pro Education devices.

Microsoft’s edition table lists Windows Enterprise and Education, with associated Enterprise E3/E5 and Education A3/A5 entitlements, as supported. Pro is not listed as a supported edition in that table, although prior device history and default-enablement behavior mean the actual state can vary. Check the PC’s edition, applicable license, and current feature state rather than relying on its Windows 11 version alone. Microsoft’s overview covers eligibility and default enablement.

The overview lists VBS and Secure Boot as requirements. Microsoft recommends TPM 1.2 or 2.0 for hardware binding, and UEFI Lock to make it harder to disable Credential Guard through a registry change. TPM is a recommendation in this guidance, not a universal instruction to buy new hardware.

Will it affect VPN, Wi-Fi, Remote Desktop, or other sign-ins?

Many ordinary Kerberos-based services, including file shares and Remote Desktop, continue to work in general. The specific effect depends on how the service authenticates. Credential Guard blocks some authentication capabilities and can affect others:

Rank #3
Authentication capability or method Potential effect
Kerberos DES, unconstrained delegation, Kerberos TGT extraction, and NTLMv1 These capabilities are blocked and can break applications that depend on them.
Digest authentication, credential delegation, MS-CHAPv2, and CredSSP Applications may prompt for credentials or expose them to risk.
Kerberos-based file shares and Remote Desktop They continue to work in general, but behavior depends on the service’s authentication method.

Microsoft also identifies Wi-Fi, VPN, RDP, and wired 802.1X configurations that rely on insecure password-based protocols as potential sources of lost single sign-on. You may need to authenticate again in each new Windows session. This is particularly relevant if you use a school or employer profile, or an older network setup. Microsoft’s known-issues guidance discusses these cases.

For Wi-Fi and VPN connections using MS-CHAPv2-based methods such as PEAP-MSCHAPv2 or EAP-MSCHAPv2, Microsoft recommends moving to certificate-based authentication such as PEAP-TLS or EAP-TLS. That change usually depends on the network provider or administrator; it is not simply a Credential Guard setting you can change on your own.

How to decide whether to keep it enabled

  1. Check the actual state. Confirm your Windows edition and applicable license, then determine whether Credential Guard is running. Eligible devices can have it enabled by default, so do not assume its state from memory or from how Windows was originally set up.
  2. List the sign-ins you depend on. Pay particular attention to older VPN or Wi-Fi profiles, wired 802.1X, remote access, software that delegates credentials, and applications that may rely on legacy authentication protocols.
  3. Test those workflows. If they work normally, keeping Credential Guard enabled preserves its added protection for the credentials it covers. If a workflow fails or repeatedly asks for credentials, identify the authentication method and ask the service provider or administrator whether a supported update is available.
  4. Disable it only if a required workflow cannot be made compatible. Microsoft warns that turning it off leaves stored domain credentials vulnerable to theft. The appropriate removal procedure depends on how Credential Guard was configured; UEFI Lock requires accounting for the firmware setting, while configurations without it may be changed through policy or registry settings after a restart. Follow Microsoft’s configuration and removal procedure for the device rather than making an isolated registry change.

Credential Guard is one part of account security

Credential Guard addresses a specific risk: malware extracting certain Windows credentials from the operating system. It does not protect every account or credential flow, so keep using sound account-security practices. In organizational settings, Microsoft’s broader guidance recommends moving away from passwords toward Windows Hello for Business, FIDO2 security keys, or smart cards where appropriate. These are broader authentication options, not prerequisites for Credential Guard. Microsoft’s identity-protection guidance discusses these approaches.

Microsoft characterizes Credential Guard as a strong mitigation while warning that persistent attackers may shift to other techniques. For personal use, keeping it enabled when compatible is a practical judgment based on Microsoft’s technical and compatibility guidance—not a dedicated Microsoft recommendation for every home user.
