Install an iOS update promptly when Apple says it fixes an actively exploited vulnerability or directs affected users to update. For a routine release, you can schedule it for a convenient time—after backing up, checking the release details and confirming your iPhone is compatible. Apple does not prescribe a universal number of days to wait after a release.
How to decide whether to update now
The right timing depends on the update’s security urgency, what it changes, and whether your iPhone is ready to install it. Check Apple’s release details rather than assuming every update has the same purpose or applies to every model.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Apple says a vulnerability is actively exploited, identifies your iOS version as affected, or tells affected users to update | Back up if feasible, then install as soon as practical. Follow the advisory’s device- and version-specific directions. Apple’s April 14, 2026 advisory about web-based attacks on out-of-date software applies to the versions it names; it is not a blanket statement about every iOS release. Read Apple’s advisory. |
| Routine update and you need your phone right now | Choose a near-term quiet period when the iPhone can remain on power and Wi-Fi. Back up and review the update details before installing. |
| Your iPhone is several releases behind or cannot run the newest major iOS version | Check Software Update for the version Apple offers for your model. Install compatible security updates rather than assuming the newest major release is available. |
| The update does not appear or wireless installation fails | Check your connection and VPN or proxy settings. If needed, use Apple’s computer-based update method. |
What to check before a routine update
Back up your iPhone
Apple advises making a backup before updating. Its iPhone guide says that when you update to the latest iOS, your data and settings remain unchanged; a backup is still prudent preparation in case something goes wrong. Apple’s iPhone update guide covers the preparation steps.
Confirm the update and compatibility
Open Settings > General > Software Update to see what is available for your iPhone. Review More Details or the release notes to understand what the update contains. The available version depends on your device and installed software, so do not assume all models receive the same release. Apple’s update instructions explain how to check compatibility and install.

Pick a time when the phone can be unavailable
For a non-urgent release, install when you do not need the iPhone and can keep it connected to power and Wi-Fi. Apple’s automatic-update option can download and install updates overnight under those conditions, and Apple says it notifies you before installation. You can enable automatic installation in the iPhone’s Software Update settings. See Apple’s software update guidance.
If an update will not install wirelessly
First check that your internet connection is working. Apple notes that a VPN or proxy connection may prevent the iPhone from reaching its update servers; disconnecting it temporarily may help if it is safe and appropriate to do so. If the update still does not appear or install, Apple documents updating with a connected Mac or Windows computer. That route requires a cable compatible with both devices; a cable is not needed for a normal wireless update. See Apple’s update methods.

What interim security updates do—and do not—replace
Apple can deliver system-file updates that improve features without changing the iOS version, and Background Security Improvements that add protection between full software releases. Apple says a security improvement may rarely be temporarily removed because of a compatibility issue and included in a future software update instead. These mechanisms are useful, but they should not be treated as a substitute when Apple specifically directs users to install a full iOS update. Learn about Background Security Improvements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why you may not be able to roll back later
Apple describes signed-code and authorization checks for iOS versions it continues to sign. Once Apple stops signing an older version, those checks can prevent installing it. For that reason, do not assume you can easily return to an earlier iOS version after an update. Apple Platform Security explains secure software updates.
