You can run ntfy on your home server, but it should not be the only way you learn that server has failed. If the machine, its power, or your home internet goes down, ntfy may go down with it. For important alerts, place monitoring outside the home server—and preferably outside the home network—and deliver outage warnings through a separate route.
Why hosting ntfy on the monitored server creates a blind spot
An alert system needs two working pieces: something that detects a problem and a route that delivers the warning. If both depend on the same home server, a host failure can disable both at once. The server cannot use a service running on itself to report that it is completely unreachable.
The same dependency can arise with a power cut or a failed router. A UPS can help with some brief power interruptions, but it does not address a crashed host, a prolonged outage, an internet failure, or a broken notification route. It is one mitigation, not independent monitoring.

The important distinction is between a notification broker and an independent watchdog for the infrastructure it runs on.

What ntfy’s availability and health features do—and do not—tell you
Hosted ntfy is described as best effort
ntfy’s FAQ describes its hosted service availability as “Best effort” and recounts a period when it ran on one DigitalOcean droplet without redundancy. That is a dated account of the hosted service, not a guarantee about every self-hosted installation or its current architecture. The FAQ also includes the operator’s recollection of no remembered outages alongside short blips and HTTP 500 spikes; that recollection is not a measured uptime figure. Read the ntfy FAQ.
ntfy’s terms say the hosted service does not promise guaranteed uptime or a specific SLA, and recommend self-hosting for applications that require one. Hosting it yourself gives you control, but does not automatically provide redundancy: a single self-hosted machine remains a single failure domain. See ntfy’s Terms of Service.

The health endpoint checks the service, not the whole delivery chain
ntfy provides a preliminary GET /v1/health endpoint. Its documentation says to treat a non-200 response or a JSON response with healthy: false as unhealthy. A successful response indicates that the endpoint reported healthy when checked; it does not prove that a specific phone received, displayed, or surfaced an alert. ntfy also supports Prometheus metrics for dashboards and alerts, and cautions that metrics access should be secured because it may reveal sensitive information. Where the health check or metrics are run matters. A check on the same host may detect a problem in the ntfy process while the host is still operating, but it cannot independently report the host’s total failure. The official Docker installation example includes an optional check against /v1/health; that container check is useful for process health, not a substitute for an external uptime probe. How to build an alert path that survives a home-server outage
- Keep ntfy where it makes sense for your deployment. Treat it as a notification component, not the sole watchdog for the machine and network that host it.
- Run an availability monitor outside that machine. Prefer a monitor outside the home network so it can test whether a public endpoint is reachable even when the router or internet connection fails. Probe
/v1/healthto check ntfy’s reported health, or probe another meaningful service if the goal is to detect broader server availability. ntfy’s examples document integrations with Uptime Kuma and UptimeRobot; the examples establish integration options, not an uptime guarantee. See ntfy’s examples. - Deliver the outage alert independently. If the monitor sends its warning only through the ntfy instance that has become unreachable, the alert still depends on the failed system. Choose a separate delivery route or infrastructure for the critical warning.
- Test the complete path. Trigger a real alert and confirm that it reaches a device and is noticeable to a person. An HTTP publish succeeding is not evidence that notification permissions, device state, browser behavior, and human response all worked.
- Use a UPS as a limited power measure, if appropriate. Include the server and relevant network equipment in the backup-power plan. A UPS can cover some brief power interruptions; it cannot fix host, internet, proxy, or push-delivery failures.
Where self-hosted ntfy alerts can still fail
Home internet or router failure
ntfy may be healthy on the local machine while being unreachable from outside the home. An external probe can reveal that reachability problem. To receive the warning, however, the monitor must use a delivery path that does not rely on the failed home connection.
Reverse proxy or WebSocket configuration
If ntfy sits behind a reverse proxy, its troubleshooting guide says to enable behind-proxy when appropriate and ensure WebSockets work. It also documents a case where a 403 Forbidden response for one subscribed topic can disrupt a combined subscription request and leave topics reconnecting. See ntfy’s troubleshooting guide.

Self-hosted iOS push delivery
For instant delivery to self-hosted ntfy on iOS, the configuration documentation describes forwarding poll requests to an upstream server connected to APNS/FCM. Without upstream-base-url, notifications may take hours depending on the phone’s state. Check that base-url and upstream-base-url are set appropriately, and that the phone can reach the self-hosted server. ntfy’s FAQ and publishing documentation describe message caching for 12 hours by default. Caching can help a subscriber recover messages after a restart, polling delay, or temporary client network disruption; disabling it can mean disconnected subscribers miss messages. It does not keep an unavailable server online or send an alert about that server’s outage, and it should not be treated as guaranteed real-time delivery. See ntfy’s message-publishing documentation.

Notification arrives but is not noticed
Delivery to a service endpoint is only one link in the chain. Device permissions, the phone’s state, browser behavior, and whether someone responds all affect whether an alert is useful. Include the intended device and a human check in periodic end-to-end tests.

“Hosted or self-hosted?” is not the only decision. Consider which components share a failure domain and how quickly a missed alert matters.
