Most Windows 11 users should stick with Balanced or their PC maker’s recommended power setup. Enable a performance-focused option only if a repeatable test shows a worthwhile improvement for a task you care about. On laptops, weigh any benefit against battery use, heat, and fan noise—and check whether your device supports Modern Standby.
Ultimate Performance is not the same as Best Performance
Windows has two related but distinct controls. Ultimate Performance is the name of a power plan, also called a power scheme. Windows 11’s Settings app has a separate Power mode control, with options Microsoft describes as Best Power Efficiency, Balanced, and Best Performance. Selecting Best Performance in Settings does not mean you have enabled the Ultimate Performance plan.
A power plan is a collection of settings that can have separate values for plugged-in and battery operation. Microsoft describes the High Performance plan as prioritizing maximum performance at the expense of higher power consumption; that description is not a benchmark of Ultimate Performance. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a general speed, battery-life, temperature, or fan-noise advantage for Ultimate Performance over Balanced.
When to keep your current setup—and when to test a change
For everyday use and laptops
Keep Balanced or the device maker’s recommended setup for ordinary use, especially when you regularly run on battery. If a particular task feels slow, test a performance-focused setting while plugged in and compare the task with your usual setup. Keep the change only if the result is useful enough to justify its trade-offs.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
For desktops and workstations
A performance-oriented setting may be worth testing for a sustained workload, such as a task with a measurable completion time. There is no documented universal gain from enabling Ultimate Performance, so judge it on your own machine rather than assuming it will make the whole PC faster.
For gaming
Do not expect higher frame rates simply from changing the power plan. Check the game and settings you actually use, and consider frame-time behavior as well as average frame rate. Drivers, graphics settings, thermals, and vendor utilities can also affect results.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Check what your PC supports before changing plans
Open Settings > System > Power & battery to see the Power mode options available on your Windows 11 device. Microsoft describes Best Power Efficiency as reducing power consumption and Best Performance as favoring performance over power. If you cannot change the mode, a custom power plan may be selected. Names and availability can vary with hardware, Windows version, and vendor configuration.

Modern Standby devices support only the Balanced plan or plans derived from Balanced, according to Microsoft. The performance slider is available when Balanced or a Balanced-derived plan is selected. That slider adjusts a limited set of performance-related settings; it does not necessarily control every factor affecting performance. The GPU, thermal behavior, and other settings may also be managed by firmware or the PC maker’s software. Check those controls before trying to force a legacy plan.

You can inspect the plans Windows reports by opening Terminal or Command Prompt and running:
powercfg /list
The command lists available power schemes. Work or school policies and OEM configurations may restrict which plans or controls you can use, so a plan may not be available or appropriate on every device.

How to test whether a performance setting helps
- Choose a repeatable task. Use the application and workload you want to improve, with the same settings each time.
- Keep conditions consistent. Compare results with the same power source—plugged in or on battery—and avoid changing other relevant settings between runs.
- Measure a relevant outcome. Record task completion time for a work task, or frame-time behavior for a game. A change that does not improve the outcome you care about is not a practical gain.
- Notice the trade-offs. On a laptop, watch battery use, heat, and fan behavior during the same workload. Their effect depends on the device and conditions; there is no universal penalty figure.
- Return to your previous setting if the result is not worthwhile. Keep the setup that best fits your normal use, rather than leaving a performance-focused option enabled by default.
