Usually, yes—as a backup, not as your main lock. If you sometimes walk away from an unlocked device, a supported proximity feature can reduce the window of exposure. Keep a reasonable idle-lock timeout and lock the screen yourself when you leave; Bluetooth proximity is not a guarantee.
What automatic locking by Bluetooth proximity actually does
On Windows, Dynamic Lock pairs a phone with a PC and uses the phone’s Bluetooth signal as an indication that you have moved away. When that signal weakens past a threshold, Windows locks the PC if it is idle. Microsoft describes it as an additional barrier: it does not replace locking the computer yourself. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lock documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Bluetooth does not measure a dependable number of feet or meters. Dynamic Lock uses received signal strength (RSSI), a relative measurement that can behave differently in different environments. Walls, device placement, and local radio conditions can affect when the signal crosses the threshold. Microsoft says the default policy is intended to allow movement around an average-size office or cubicle without triggering a lock; that is not a universal distance rule.
When enabling it makes sense
Turn on Windows Dynamic Lock if you carry a paired Bluetooth phone and want an extra safeguard against occasionally leaving your PC unlocked. It is most useful as a fallback for brief, accidental walkaways—not as a way to leave sensitive work unattended. NIST identifies unattended, unlocked devices as a physical-access and privacy threat, and includes proximity-based auto-lock among possible countermeasures. NIST’s PHY-4 entry describes the threat.

- Enable it as a backup if you sometimes step away without locking the PC.
- Do not rely on it alone. Continue to use an idle-lock timeout and lock manually when leaving.
- Test it where you work. Verify whether it locks at a useful time in your normal environment rather than assuming a particular range.
- Keep expectations modest. A delayed or missed lock is possible because the feature depends on signal behavior and the PC being idle.
How it differs from other “trusted device” features
| Feature | What it does | Main condition or caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Dynamic Lock | Locks an idle Windows PC after the paired phone’s Bluetooth signal weakens. | RSSI varies by environment; the PC must be idle. Microsoft |
| Windows 11 Lock on Leave | Locks a supported PC using a human-presence sensor when it detects a person leaving. | Requires capable hardware and a Present-to-NotPresent transition; a video or ongoing call can prevent locking. Microsoft |
| Android Extend Unlock | Keeps an Android phone unlocked longer when selected conditions are met, including connection to a trusted Bluetooth device. | This is a stay-unlocked feature, not automatic locking when the companion device moves away. Bluetooth range varies, and a connection could be imitated. Google |
These features are not interchangeable. Dynamic Lock is intended to lock a Windows PC when its paired phone moves away. Android Extend Unlock does the opposite: it can keep the phone unlocked while a trusted device is connected. Google recommends not choosing a trusted device that is normally with the phone, such as a Bluetooth keyboard or case.
Bluetooth locking versus Windows 11 Lock on Leave
On a Windows 11 PC with supported presence-sensing hardware, Lock on Leave is a separate option from Dynamic Lock. It relies on the sensor detecting that a person who was present is now absent, rather than on a phone’s Bluetooth signal. Microsoft notes that if the screen wakes while you are outside the sensor’s view, the system may need to observe the person-present-to-absent transition again before it locks. A power request—for example, from video playback or an ongoing call—can also prevent locking; a more aggressive screen timeout takes precedence. See Microsoft’s Lock on Leave documentation for the hardware and behavior details.

Microsoft lists engineering design benchmarks for Lock on Leave of less than 15 seconds maximum leave latency and less than 5 seconds average leave latency, based on an average of three trials in its described setup. It also states targets below 5% for false positives and false negatives. These are design benchmarks and targets for the presence-sensing feature—not field effectiveness results and not measurements of Bluetooth Dynamic Lock.
Bluetooth trusted-device risks on Android
Because Extend Unlock can keep a phone unlocked, a spoofed trusted-device connection could undermine that stay-unlocked condition. NIST’s AUT-6 entry documents this as a threat consideration for Android Smart Lock, citing a 2016 secondary source. It is not evidence of how often attacks occur or proof that every current Android implementation is vulnerable. This caveat concerns Android’s trusted-device auto-unlock behavior; it should not be treated as evidence of a bypass of Windows Dynamic Lock.

What to do in practice
- Keep the normal lock protections in place. Set an idle-lock timeout that fits your security needs and lock the screen manually when leaving.
- Enable Dynamic Lock on a Windows PC if it suits your routine. Pair the phone you normally carry with the PC, then open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and turn on Dynamic lock. Windows 10 and Windows 11 support the documented feature; labels can vary slightly by release.
- Test the result in your usual environment. Walk away with the paired phone and see whether the idle PC locks at a useful point. If it does not behave consistently, do not treat it as dependable protection.
- Check for Lock on Leave separately. If your Windows 11 PC has presence-sensing support, review its presence-sensing settings. It is a different mechanism and may be affected by sensor visibility, power requests, and screen-timeout settings.
- Review Android trusted-device settings with the opposite effect in mind. Extend Unlock keeps the phone unlocked longer; use only a device you are comfortable treating as a trusted condition, and avoid one that is always alongside the phone.
Do you need to buy anything?
No purchase is established as necessary for this decision. The documented options are built-in operating-system features that depend on supported behavior and hardware. For Windows Dynamic Lock, the guidance uses a Bluetooth-paired phone; the available documentation does not establish that a generic adapter, smartwatch, security key, or other accessory is required or sufficient. A security key addresses authentication, not proximity-based automatic locking.
