Buy now if there are games you want to play and one console fits your games, friends, or existing library better. Wait if your current setup is working and you are comfortable with an unknown timeline. Microsoft has announced its next-generation Xbox, Project Helix, but says developer alpha hardware is planned to begin shipping in 2027—not that the console will launch for consumers then. Sony’s 2026 investor Q&A said no decision had been made on next-generation timing or pricing. Neither source establishes a retail release date.
What should you buy: PS5 or Xbox Series X?
Start with the specific games you want to play, then consider where your friends play and which console library you already own. A headline comparison of hardware cannot tell you which system is the better purchase for your situation. Check each must-play game’s current platform and whether it supports cross-play with your friends; those details vary by title.
- Lean toward PS5 if its available games or your existing PlayStation library are the deciding factors.
- Lean toward Xbox Series X if its games, friends, or Xbox library matter more. Microsoft lists backward compatibility with Xbox One and select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games; compatibility is not universal. Microsoft’s Series X product page describes the system and compatibility.
- Choose based on your disc collection if you want physical games, used copies, or resale. Confirm that the exact console model has a disc drive and that the titles you care about work on it.
For a concrete example of announced games—not a complete library comparison—Xbox’s January 2026 announcement listed Fable for Xbox Series X|S and PS5, while Forza Horizon 6 was announced for Xbox and PC first, with a later PS5 release planned. Platform plans can change, so verify a game’s current listing before buying around it. Xbox’s January 2026 Developer_Direct announcement gives those plans.

Use local checkout prices, not a US figure as a worldwide quote. As dated US reference points, Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 were $649.99 for PS5 with disc drive, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Microsoft’s US Store product page showed Xbox Series X starting at $799.99 when accessed on October 7, 2026. The Microsoft figure is a live listing snapshot, not a fixed global price; retailer offers, stock, and model configurations affect what you will actually pay.

When is the next generation coming?
Microsoft’s Project Helix
Microsoft describes Project Helix as a next-generation first-party Xbox designed to play Xbox console and PC games, built around a custom AMD system-on-chip. Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald wrote, “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” That is a development milestone, not a consumer release date, and it does not establish the final product name, price, or specifications. Sony’s next-generation platform
Sony’s 2026 Corporate Strategy and Earnings Announcement Presentation Q&A summary said “no decisions have been made regarding timing or pricing” for next-generation platforms. That statement is not a launch window, and the available official evidence does not support assigning a consumer release year to Sony’s successor. Sony’s 2026 investor presentation and Q&A materials.
Why a future console’s price is especially uncertain
Xbox said in June 2026 that storage and memory costs had risen and expected further increases by fall 2027. In a separate strategy post, the company said it expected storage costs by the 2027 holiday season to be more than five times the prices it paid two years earlier. Those are Xbox’s statements and expectations, not an independently established forecast of future console prices or availability. Xbox’s June 2026 price update and Xbox’s June 2026 strategy post.

Waiting may avoid buying close to a successor’s eventual launch, but the cited announcements do not tell you how long you would wait or what a new system would cost. Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has argued that incremental upgrades alone may not persuade buyers to spend a hypothetical $1,000; that is his opinion, not a confirmed next-generation price. GamesRadar+’s October 2026 report on Layden’s comments.
When does waiting make sense?
- Wait if your current console or PC handles the games you want and you would rather see a consumer product, price, and launch library before deciding.
- Buy now if a game you want is available on one of these consoles and waiting would mean missing the time you want to spend playing it.
- Do not buy based on a rumored successor date. The official milestones above do not confirm a retail launch window for either platform.
- Consider a sale or used console only after checking the complete local price, included accessories, condition, and any warranty or return terms. The cited prices are reference points, not evidence that a particular local deal is good.
Should you pay extra for PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro is a premium option for buyers whose budget and interest in enhanced visuals make the upgrade worthwhile. Sony says Pro-enhanced features are available only in selected games and vary by game, so do not assume every title receives the same improvement. Its 2 TB SSD is identified in Sony’s launch announcement, but the launch price has been superseded in the listed US prices by Sony’s April 2026 update. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.

Discs and backward compatibility
Microsoft says most Xbox One and Series X disc games support a digital entitlement feature, but not every title was supported at launch. This does not mean a digital library replaces the disc: confirm the specific game and model before relying on the feature. Xbox’s disc entitlement feature post.

Microsoft lists Series X with a 1 TB custom SSD, 12 teraflops, and support for up to 120 FPS. These are Microsoft product claims, not a guarantee that every game runs at 4K or 120 FPS. Storage expansion compatibility depends on the exact console and drive; check the model’s requirements and whether games can run from the drive before choosing an accessory.
