Wait for reviews if your current phone still meets your needs and is receiving security updates. You’ll have more evidence about the new model and time to compare its price and purchase terms with other options. Buy sooner if your phone is failing, unsupported, or preventing you from doing something important—or if the new model’s specific improvements and verified offer justify the cost.
Start with the phone you already own
Decide whether you need a replacement now, rather than treating a launch date as a deadline. Consumer Reports identifies persistent performance problems, a damaged battery or screen, and the loss of security updates as reasons to consider replacing a phone. Repair or trade-in may also be worth comparing with replacement, depending on the problem and the phone’s value. Consumer Reports’ cell phone buying guide discusses these choices; its advice is not a single rule for every owner.
If your phone still works reliably, remains supported, and handles the tasks you care about, waiting is a practical option. If it no longer receives security updates or cannot meet an important need, the benefit of waiting may be smaller.
Decide whether the new model adds something you will use
List the improvements that matter to you—such as camera results, display, battery experience, performance, software features, or support—and compare them with your current phone. A new generation is not automatically a meaningful upgrade: Consumer Reports notes that changes between generations can be incremental. Check its current phone-buying guidance and ratings, then assess the exact models and features you are considering.

A feature only makes a launch purchase more compelling if you expect to use it. If the differences are minor for your needs, consider whether your current phone or a previous-generation model would serve just as well.
Use reviews to answer your questions, not just to get a score
Look for hands-on testing of the exact model, and check what device and software the reviewer tested, what conditions they used, and whether the findings address your priorities. A camera review, for example, is most useful when it explains the situations in which the phone was tested rather than relying only on a headline rating.

Reviews may not appear on a fixed schedule. DXOMARK says timing can depend on factors such as device availability, reader interest, product innovation, and editorial priorities. Its review FAQ helps explain why you may not find a review on launch day. Waiting for a review gives you additional evidence, not a guarantee that every long-term issue is already known.
Assess owner reports without assuming launch phones are defective
Once more people have a phone, repeated reports may reveal recurring software behavior or problems that a short review did not uncover. Give more weight to reports that describe the same issue across multiple owners and explain the model, software version, and circumstances. Treat a single anecdote as a lead, not proof that a model has a widespread fault.

There is no general, source-backed defect rate showing that launch units are more likely to fail. An older Android Authority article discusses possible early software issues and later offers, but it is an editorial viewpoint, not evidence of a universal defect pattern or a reliable schedule for fixes or discounts. Read it as one perspective on waiting, and judge any concern using evidence about the specific phone. A software patch may resolve a reported problem, but do not assume that it will.
Compare the real price and purchase terms
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not only the advertised launch price. Include the trade-in value, financing terms, any bundled items, delivery timing, and the seller’s return policy. A deal is worthwhile only if its terms fit your needs and the final cost makes sense for you.

Waiting may bring more offers or alternatives into view, but there is no dependable general discount percentage or post-launch schedule established here. Do not delay solely because you expect a particular price drop; verify the offer for the exact phone, seller, and region.
Check support for the exact model
Look up the manufacturer’s stated operating-system and security-update commitment for the specific model you plan to buy. Compare that commitment with how long you expect to keep the phone. Update delivery can involve several parties: the Federal Trade Commission described the mobile update process as complex in its February 2018 recommendations. The FTC’s update-security recommendations provide context, but they do not establish current support policies for individual phones.

Do not infer a model’s support period from a brand’s general promise unless the manufacturer applies that policy to the exact device and region. Check the current policy before buying.
A practical launch-versus-wait decision
- Replace now if there is a concrete need. Consider reliability, damage, update status, and whether your current phone blocks something important. Compare repair, trade-in, and replacement where relevant.
- Write down the changes you value. Identify the camera, display, battery experience, performance, software features, or support commitment that would make this model useful to you.
- Wait for relevant review evidence if you can. Prefer hands-on findings about the exact device and your use cases; review timing varies, and early coverage cannot settle every long-term question.
- Look for repeated owner reports. Check whether multiple owners describe the same issue and whether it is tied to a particular software version. Do not treat isolated reports as proof of a model-wide problem.
- Compare the full transaction. Check price, trade-in, financing, included items, delivery, and return terms for the exact offer. Do not assume waiting will produce a discount.
- Verify support and make the timing trade-off. Compare the exact model’s stated update policy with your ownership horizon, then weigh the value of getting the phone now against the extra evidence you could gain by waiting.
