No. “Drone” remains useful, familiar shorthand in general writing, but it does not describe every aircraft or system precisely. Use the specific term—such as unmanned aircraft (UA), unmanned aircraft system (UAS), remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), or remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS)—when the distinction matters. And when an object has not been identified, describe it as a reported sighting rather than calling it a drone as fact.

Why “drone” can mean more than one thing

In everyday conversation, “drone” is a convenient name for a remotely piloted aircraft. The FAA’s 2021 Safety Briefing calls it an “overarching colloquial term” for remotely piloted aircraft. But the word is broad: as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) explains, it can cover aircraft with different designs and capabilities.

That breadth is harmless when the exact category is irrelevant. It becomes a problem when a reader needs to know whether a reference is to the aircraft itself, its entire operating system, who or what controls it, or how it fits a regulatory category.

Which term should you use?

Term What it refers to When it helps
Drone A familiar, broad colloquial label for remotely piloted aircraft. General-audience writing where technical classification is not important. Define or qualify it if ambiguity could matter.
UA (unmanned aircraft) The aircraft itself, rather than the wider system, in the FAA terminology described in its 2021 briefing. When the subject is specifically the aircraft. Preserve this wording in relevant regulatory contexts or quotations rather than silently substituting another label.
UAS (unmanned aircraft system) The wider system: aircraft, control station, and communication link, as described by the FAA. When the equipment and control arrangement—not only the aircraft—are relevant.
RPA (remotely piloted aircraft) An aircraft category emphasizing remote piloting. When the remote-pilot aspect or a particular aviation category matters. Exact usage depends on the relevant authority.
RPAS (remotely piloted aircraft system) A remotely piloted aircraft and its associated system. When the system and remote-pilot arrangement matter in a context that uses this terminology.

These labels are not interchangeable in every rule or operational setting. ICAO says specific terminology helps distinguish aircraft categories and capabilities, including RPA that can be integrated alongside conventional aviation. Its terminology should not be assumed to replace the terms used by another regulator. For technical or regulatory writing, follow the authority and category relevant to the claim, and spell out an acronym at first use.

“Unmanned,” “uncrewed,” and “remotely piloted” are not synonyms

Choosing a more precise term is not as simple as replacing “drone” everywhere with one supposedly perfect alternative. “Unmanned” appears in established terms such as UA and UAS, but it can carry gendered implications. A 2018 Canadian working paper submitted to ICAO discussed that concern and the argument that “remotely piloted” better reflects the human role in controlling an aircraft. That paper documents a terminology argument; it should not be read as proof that every detail is current Canadian policy.

“Uncrewed” has been proposed as a gender-neutral alternative in some settings. An excerpt from an FAA Drone Advisory Committee document recommended it as a short-term option, but that recommendation does not establish universal adoption. Nor does “uncrewed” fit every platform: Zachary Kallenborn, writing an opinion essay for the Modern War Institute, argues that the word may mislead when a platform has a crew. The institute notes that its authors’ views are not official U.S. Military Academy, Army, or Department of Defense positions.

There is also a reasonable case for retaining “drone” in public-facing writing. Kallenborn describes it as commonly understood and gender-neutral, while acknowledging its imprecision. That is an author’s view, not an official military policy. The practical choice is to weigh familiarity against the precision the context requires, rather than treating any one term as the right replacement in all cases.

Why uncertain sightings need careful wording

Calling an unidentified object a “drone” can turn a witness’s description into an apparent factual classification. A useful distinction is between “a witness reported seeing what they described as a drone” and “a drone was observed.” Use the second only when the identification is supported.

That distinction mattered in a joint statement from the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, FAA, and Department of Defense dated December 16, 2024. The agencies said that more than 5,000 sighting tips had been received in the preceding few weeks; those were tips, not 5,000 verified aircraft. Their review included lawful drones, crewed aircraft, helicopters, and stars misreported as drones. The statement also said more than one million drones were lawfully registered with the FAA in the United States at that time—a dated figure, not a current registration total. Its assessment that the activity reviewed presented no national-security or public-safety risk over civilian airspace in New Jersey or other northeastern states applied to the activity assessed then, not to later events. See the agencies’ December 16, 2024 statement.

A practical style rule

  • For general explanation: “Drone” is usually clear and accessible. Add a brief definition if readers may confuse the aircraft with the wider system.
  • For technical or regulatory claims: Use the term the relevant regulator uses, and distinguish the aircraft, system, pilot arrangement, and category as needed.
  • For uncertain reports: Attribute the label to the observer or say “reported sighting” until the object is identified.
  • For inclusion edits: Consider whether “unmanned” is necessary in your own prose, but do not alter a formal term or quotation in a way that changes its meaning.
  • For mixed audiences: Introduce the precise term and explain it in plain language—for example, “a UAS, meaning the aircraft and its control equipment”—then use the term consistently.

There is no established statistic showing how a particular terminology choice changes safety, inclusion, or public trust. The case for precision is therefore practical and contextual: choose a word that gives readers the right degree of certainty and the distinctions the subject requires.
