For a payment flow, the backend should decide and persist which transitions are allowed; the mobile app should collect input and render the next permitted action. That is a sound architectural direction, not a universal law that client-side orchestration cannot scale. The available documentation does not verify Zeney Pay’s implementation or establish measured scaling gains. This article explains the design choice and the trade-offs without treating those details as facts about Zeney Pay.

What a backend-authored state machine changes

A state machine makes a workflow’s states and transition decisions explicit. AWS describes task states that do work and choice states that determine what happens next; a workflow may also include states that stop execution with an error. In a payment flow, that means the server evaluates business rules, records the current workflow state, and communicates what the app may do next. The app remains responsible for presenting the interface and gathering user input, but it does not authoritatively decide that a payment is approved, captured, or otherwise advanced.

This separation is about authority, not about making the app passive. The client can guide a user through screens and request an action. The backend validates that action against the persisted workflow and current policy, then returns the resulting state or permitted next action. AWS’s Step Functions state-machine API documentation is one example of explicit task and choice states; it does not show that Zeney Pay uses Step Functions.

Why payment flows need explicit states

A payment is rarely a single, synchronous yes-or-no event. Amazon Pay’s API, for example, documents distinct objects and states: a Checkout Session can move from open to completed or canceled; charges include authorization and capture-related states as well as declined or canceled outcomes; refunds may remain pending before completion or decline. These are Amazon Pay’s API semantics, not a universal state model for every payment provider.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those intermediate states matter to the interface and to recovery. A client that assumes “request sent” means “payment succeeded” may show an incorrect result. A backend-authored model can distinguish a request that is still processing from one that is complete, declined, or canceled, and can tell the app which presentation or user action is appropriate. Provider callbacks, polling, and reconciliation details depend on the chosen payment API and are not specified by the examples here.

What “trusting the client” means in practice

If the app chooses the next business transition and the backend accepts that choice without independently validating it, the workflow’s authority sits partly on a component outside the server’s control. App versions can differ, sessions can be interrupted, and clients can submit stale or repeated requests. Moving the decision and durable workflow record to the backend gives the service a single place to enforce current rules and resume from recorded state.

This is an architectural implication, not a proof that a client-driven design inevitably fails. There is no cited benchmark establishing a scale threshold or quantifying reliability, cost, or performance differences between client-authored and backend-authored transitions. The meaningful question is whether the client is merely choosing what to display or whether it is being trusted to assert that a business event occurred.

Retries must account for uncertain outcomes

A timeout does not establish whether a payment operation succeeded. Cash App Pay explains that after an HTTP 500, the caller may not know whether a payment was created because it cannot see the cause of the error. Its documentation uses idempotency keys so a retry can return an existing payment rather than create another. See Cash App Pay’s idempotency documentation.

Idempotency is a contract for safely repeating a particular operation; it does not define the entire payment workflow. AWS’s Durable Execution SDK guidance on idempotency and retries distinguishes at-least-once replay from at-most-once behavior per retry and cautions that neither is an exactly-once guarantee across a whole workflow. A retry policy must match the side effect: replaying an idempotent operation can be safe, while blindly repeating a non-idempotent charge request can create duplicate effects.

Where a provider supports idempotency, preserve the same key for retries of the same logical operation. If a request may have succeeded but its response was lost, the system also needs a way to reconcile the provider’s outcome rather than inventing a new operation. Amazon Pay, for example, requires an idempotency key on requests that create resources, including checkout-session creation, charge creation, capture, and refund creation. Its header requirement applies to that API, not to payment APIs generally.

Trade-offs to evaluate

Design question Backend-authored transitions Client-authored transitions
Authority The backend validates and decides the next legal transition. The client may select or assert the next transition; the backend still needs validation for consequential actions.
Durability State can be persisted centrally and used to resume a workflow across sessions or app versions. State held only by the client may be unavailable after interruption or a device change; a design can mitigate this by syncing state with a server.
Failure behavior Requires handling backend outages, stale client requests, and uncertain responses. Can make some local navigation less dependent on a round trip, but cannot safely settle server-side payment outcomes without authoritative confirmation.
Side-effect safety Can centralize payment requests and their idempotency keys, but still requires provider-aware retry and reconciliation logic. Can initiate requests, but must not treat a local retry or screen transition as proof that the provider processed a payment.
Complexity and latency Requires server-side workflow logic, persistence, API contracts, and network interaction for transitions. Can reduce server orchestration for simple interface flows, while increasing the burden of keeping clients and server rules consistent.

The comparison describes design implications rather than measured results. A backend state machine centralizes policy and recovery, but it introduces persistence and operational responsibilities. It can also add round trips and makes a responsive, understandable experience dependent on network behavior. A client-led approach may suit low-risk presentation flow, provided the server remains authoritative for payment decisions and durable outcomes.

Handling stale apps and interrupted sessions

A backend-authored model needs a client/server contract that can evolve safely. An older app may submit an action that was valid under its earlier screen flow but no longer matches the current server state. The API should return enough information for the app to recover—such as the authoritative current state and an allowed next action—rather than allowing the client to overwrite it. Exact response shapes and migration steps are system-specific and are not established for Zeney Pay.

Persistence also does not remove failure handling. The backend must decide what to do when a provider response is delayed, a callback arrives after the client has closed, or the server itself is interrupted. Documenting which states are transient, terminal, or recoverable makes those cases testable and lets the app render an honest status instead of guessing.

When a managed workflow engine fits

A managed engine can represent task and choice states and execute a server-side workflow. AWS Step Functions offers Standard and Express state-machine types, according to its create_state_machine API reference. This establishes that it is an available implementation option, not that it is suitable for every payment system. Selection should depend on workflow duration, operational requirements, integration needs, and the team’s ability to operate and observe the system; the cited source does not establish a recommendation for Zeney Pay.

What is established about Zeney Pay

The available public technical references support the general case for explicit state transitions, durable server authority, and idempotent handling of payment retries. They do not establish Zeney Pay’s exact state model, which service persists it, how its mobile/API contract changed, its migration or recovery strategy, or any measured scaling result. Those details should not be inferred from the title alone.
