Its compact syntax and quick feedback make it easier to focus on fundamentals such as variables, loops, functions, and problem-solving. Choose C++ first if you already have a concrete goal in game-engine programming, embedded systems, robotics, or performance-sensitive software. Either choice leaves the other open.
How to choose between Python and C++
Use the program you want to build as the tiebreaker—not a claim that one language is universally better. Python is a broad starting point for general programming, automation, scripting, data work, and back-end development. C++ is a more direct first choice when your target specifically calls for systems-level control or performance-sensitive work.
| Decision factor | Python | C++ |
|---|---|---|
| A good reason to start | Learn general programming, automate tasks, build scripts, or explore data and back-end projects. | Work toward game engines, embedded systems, robotics, or performance-sensitive systems software. |
| What learning often feels like | Compact syntax, an interpreter, dynamic typing, and high-level data structures support quick iteration. The official tutorial is aimed at people new to Python who already have programming knowledge. | Expect to encounter static types, compilation, headers, references, object lifetimes, memory management, and build tools along the way. These are broad tendencies, not identical requirements for every program or toolchain. |
| Longer-term role | Can handle high-level application logic and can be extended with functions and types implemented in C or C++. | Can handle performance-sensitive or hardware-facing components. |
Python.org lists web and internet development, databases, desktop GUIs, scientific and numeric work, education, networking, and software and game development among Python’s application areas: About Python. The C++-specific guidance here reflects a practical comparison from Boot.dev, rather than a standards-body statement.
Why Python is usually the better first language for a beginner
When you are learning programming itself, every new concept competes for attention. Python often lets you express a small idea with less syntax and run it quickly, so you can spend more of that attention learning how a program behaves. That does not make programming effortless, or mean Python is the right first choice for every goal; it makes it a practical default when you do not yet have a specific reason to start with C++.

Python’s official tutorial is not a complete beginner course. It states: “This tutorial is designed for programmers that are new to the Python language, not beginners who are new to programming.” If you have never programmed, start with lessons that teach general concepts and include frequent practice, rather than treating that tutorial as instruction from zero. Python.org’s Beginner’s Guide to Python distinguishes first-time programmers from people who already have experience; the wiki notes that it is being archived, so check linked materials before relying on them for current setup steps.
When learning C++ first makes sense
Choose C++ first when the destination matters more than minimizing early friction. If the project you want to pursue is tied to a game engine, embedded device, robotics, or performance-sensitive systems work, learning the language and its development workflow from the outset may be more relevant than beginning with a general-purpose introduction in Python.

Be prepared to learn more than syntax. C++ commonly brings compilation and build steps, types, headers, and questions about references, object lifetimes, and memory into the learning path. The exact sequence depends on the course, program, and toolchain; treat these as likely topics, not a checklist that every learner must encounter at the same moment. The comparison is practical guidance, not a claim that every C++ setup works the same way.
Does Python run faster than C++?
For comparable CPU-bound code, C++ is generally faster, but that broad distinction does not tell you how fast a specific program will be. The result depends on the workload and implementation. Python programs can also call optimized native libraries, so a Python application may rely on C or C++ for performance-sensitive work. Do not choose based on an assumed speed ratio or a promised speedup without a benchmark for the actual task.

How to start learning
If you are completely new to programming
- Pick a beginner-oriented course or guide that explains general programming concepts, not only Python syntax. Python.org’s beginner guide is a starting point for finding instruction, though the wiki is being archived.
- Write and run small programs regularly. Use simple experiments to see what changes when you alter a value, condition, or function.
- Build one small project you care about, such as a basic automation script or a simple data-handling tool. Let the project reveal what you want to learn next.
If you already know another language
The official Python tutorial can introduce Python’s language features if you already understand programming fundamentals. It covers the basics and points readers onward to the standard library and formal language reference. Python.org describes Python as “an easy to learn, powerful programming language,” but that description does not change the tutorial’s stated assumption that readers are already programmers.
If you are still torn
Build the same small project in whichever language best matches your likely goal, then assess what the next step requires: Python’s ecosystem and quick iteration, or C++’s control and relevance to your target. This is a decision exercise, not a guarantee that one language will make the project quicker or better.

Do you have to choose only one?
No. Learning one first does not close the door to the other. Python’s official tutorial explains that its interpreter can be extended with functions and types implemented in C or C++; the Python tutorial is a useful starting point for how Python fits into that relationship. In a combined project, Python can handle higher-level logic while C++ handles a component that needs native performance or closer hardware interaction.
Python.org also notes that the Python Package Index offers thousands of third-party modules. That describes the Python package ecosystem, not a measured comparison with C++ or a guarantee that a package exists for every project.
