Yes—as a drafting and campaign assistant, not as the final decision-maker. AI can help produce first drafts, rewrites, subject-line options, and repeatable campaign variations. A person should verify claims and terms, check audience fit and brand voice, and approve every message and sequence before it goes live. The sender remains responsible for commercial email compliance, even when a vendor sends the message.

What AI can do well in email marketing

AI is most useful when it speeds up work a marketer can readily inspect. Treat its output as a proposal, not approved copy.

  • Drafting and revision: Use it to create a first draft, shorten or clarify existing copy, or generate alternate subject lines. HubSpot recommends proofreading and editing AI-generated content before publishing, while preserving brand voice and checking facts: HubSpot’s AI email guidance.
  • Repeatable variations: It can help adapt a standard message for different offers or audience segments. Review each variation to make sure it remains accurate and appropriate for its intended audience.
  • Campaign operations: Depending on the platform, AI may assist with personalization, segmentation, send-time recommendations, and performance analysis. Salesforce describes these as email-marketing uses, not guaranteed improvements in results: Salesforce’s overview of AI in email marketing.

These capabilities can save time, but the available guidance does not establish that AI-written campaigns outperform human-written ones. Judge any recommendation against your campaign data and observed results rather than assuming the tool’s suggestion is better.

Where a person must step in

Verify claims and commercial terms

Check every material detail against an authoritative source before sending: names, product features, prices, eligibility rules, dates, deadlines, statistics, and other measurable claims. A plausible-sounding sentence is not evidence that the detail is correct. HubSpot specifically advises checking facts and statistics in generated copy.

Check audience, context, and voice

Read the email as its recipient would. Confirm that the tone fits your brand and that the message suits the audience’s relationship with your business. Generic promotional copy is easier to standardize than a personal message to a key customer; use more human judgment when the message depends on personal history or context the AI may not have.

Review the subject and the complete sequence

Make sure the subject accurately describes the email, then read the message from greeting through call to action. For an automated campaign, inspect the triggers and every message in the sequence—not just the first draft—before activation. A correct individual email can still be mistimed or misleading in a sequence.

Match automation to the risk

There is no universal score for deciding what to automate. Use these practical questions to set the review level:

  • How repeatable is the task? A subject-line option or reusable draft is relatively easy to check; a fully automated sequence needs review across all its messages and triggers.
  • What happens if it is wrong? An imperfect draft in an editor is different from an incorrect price, claim, or deadline sent to customers.
  • How much relationship context matters? Standard promotional copy may suit a template; a sensitive or personal customer message may need a human writer or substantial human editing.
  • What evidence feeds the recommendation? Check the data behind targeting or performance suggestions and compare recommendations with actual campaign results. There is no established universal data threshold that makes an AI recommendation reliable.
  • Who owns approval and monitoring? Name the person responsible for approving the content and the person responsible for monitoring the platform or vendor.

As the consequences of an error or the need for personal context increase, keep more control with a human. This is a practical decision approach, not a validated scoring system.

Keep compliance responsibility with the sender

For U.S. commercial email, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide covers accurate sender and routing information, a subject line that accurately reflects the message, a valid physical postal address, a clear opt-out method, and honoring opt-outs within 10 business days. It also says that hiring another company to send email does not remove the sender’s responsibility, and that businesses should monitor vendors: FTC CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide.

Those points describe the cited U.S. guidance; requirements may differ elsewhere, so check the rules that apply to your location and recipients. AI can draft copy, but it cannot take the sender’s responsibility for the message or its compliance.

What adoption figures do—and do not—show

Litmus’s 2024 State of Email Trends report says that 34% of surveyed email marketers who use generative AI use it for written content at least occasionally. That is a dated survey finding, not a current universal adoption rate, proof of effectiveness, or recommendation that every team should use AI.

A practical approval workflow

  1. Set the brief: Give the tool the audience, purpose, offer terms, approved facts, desired tone, and any claims it must not make. Avoid supplying customer data unless your tool and data-handling settings are appropriate for that information.
  2. Generate a draft or variations: Use AI for the parts of the task that are repeatable, such as an initial draft, rewrite, or subject-line alternatives.
  3. Verify the details: Check all claims, prices, dates, eligibility conditions, and names against the source of record. Remove or correct anything unsupported.
  4. Edit for people and brand: Adjust voice, clarity, relevance, and context. Check that the subject accurately reflects the message.
  5. Review the send setup: Confirm the audience, timing, triggers, complete sequence, and applicable compliance elements in the email platform.
  6. Approve and monitor: Have a named person approve the final content before sending or activating automation, then monitor results and errors.

AI can shorten the path from blank page to workable draft, and may help with some campaign operations. The person or business sending the email still needs to decide whether it is true, appropriate, compliant, and ready to reach customers.
