Shotcut version 25.01.25, announced on January 25, 2025, added Playlist Bins and search, a file browser panel, and two HSL color filters. It also introduced Gradient Map and several workflow, platform, and export changes. This is a historical release; Shotcut’s official release notes document later versions and follow-up fixes.
What changed in Shotcut 25.01.25?
Shotcut describes itself as “a free, open source, cross-platform video editor for Windows, Mac and Linux.” The January 25, 2025 release announcement lists these additions:
- Bins and search by media type or text in the Playlist.
- A Files panel and “Show in Files” actions from Properties and Jobs.
- HSL Primaries and HSL Range video filters, plus a Gradient Map filter.
- A pause-after-seek setting for the player.
- A Type parameter for Fade In Audio and Fade Out Audio.
- Hardware encoding on Windows on Arm for the listed
h264_mfandhevc_mfcodecs. - Irish language support.
- Changes to MLT XML clips and sub-projects, including greater tolerance for inconsistent video modes, Properties, and a Speed: Forward Only time filter.
The release also upgraded dependencies, including MLT 7.30.0 and Qt 6.8.1. Those versions describe the 25.01 release, not Shotcut’s current dependencies. Shotcut’s release announcement has the complete change list.
How Playlist Bins and search work as additions
Bins and search give users ways to organize Playlist media and find items by media type or text. The new Files panel provides file browsing, while “Show in Files” actions from Properties and Jobs help navigate to a file’s location. These are organization and navigation features; the release announcement does not quantify time savings or performance gains.

HSL Primaries vs. HSL Range
Both filters are color-correction tools, but they differ in how they select colors. Shotcut’s color-grading guide describes HSL Primaries and HSL Range as features added in Shotcut 25.01.03.

The descriptions establish different selection scopes, not that one filter is universally better. Choose according to whether the target fits a named group or calls for a specified range.
Other notable changes and fixes
Alongside the headline additions, 25.01 introduced the Gradient Map video filter, the player’s pause-after-seek setting (on by default, preserving the old behavior), and the Type parameter for audio fade filters. Windows-on-Arm encoding support applies to the specifically listed codecs, not every system or codec.

The announcement also lists fixes involving slideshow generation, color changes when mixing video tracks and filters, time displays, subtitles, keyframes, export, and platform-specific behavior. Specific examples include subtitle timing at non-integer frame rates, marker export with non-clock time formats, and image-duration changes that did not adjust filter keyframes.

No: 25.01.25 is a release announced in January 2025, and Shotcut’s official release notes document later releases. Those notes also identify later fixes for issues that “broke in v25.01,” including Playlist behavior involving items in Bins and a Files-dock startup crash.
