The Delivery Customization API cannot calculate or add a shipping rate. It can rename, sort, or hide delivery options that Shopify has already made available at checkout. To generate real-time calculated rates—or add one conditionally—use a CarrierService connected to a rate-calculation callback.
Why Delivery Customization cannot create a rate
Shopify’s Delivery Customization Function API is for transforming delivery options during checkout. Its cart.delivery-options.transform.run target receives options and returns operations to apply to them; it does not calculate new prices or supply additional rates. See Shopify’s Delivery Customization Function API reference.
Shopify documents CarrierService for real-time shipping rates. It connects a service to an external calculation system through a callback URL. At checkout, Shopify sends the callback order details, and displays the rates the callback returns. The API responsibilities are different:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the API for the behavior you need
- Change existing options: Use Delivery Customization to hide, reorder, or rename rates Shopify already returned.
- Calculate or add a rate: Use a CarrierService or a shipping integration that supplies calculated rates.
- Make a rate depend on a selected delivery date: Pass the selected date in cart data so the CarrierService callback can use it when calculating rates. A Shopify developer-community example describes this pattern for adding a rate only after a date is selected: Shopify Community discussion, December 3, 2024.
Troubleshoot a CarrierService that is not returning rates
Once you have the correct API path, check the service setup and callback in this order. Shopify’s API documentation explains the requirements and runtime behavior; a specific shop’s cause requires its configuration and logs.
- Verify store eligibility and app permission. Creating a CarrierService requires the
write_shippingpermission and an eligible store: Advanced Shopify or higher, a Shopify plan with yearly billing or the carrier-calculated feature added for a monthly fee, or a development store. Shopify says changing to a plan that removes eligibility deactivates the store’s association with the service. Check the CarrierService reference for the applicable requirements. - Check that the service is active and linked to the fulfillment location. Shopify’s DeliveryCarrierServiceAndLocations reference describes the service/location pairing used for real-time calculations. Confirm the location can fulfill the delivery group in question.
- Inspect the callback request and response. Check that the callback URL is reachable, that the endpoint handles Shopify’s checkout details, and that its response contains rates applicable to the cart and destination. Shopify’s CarrierService reference gives dynamic per-shop-app read timeouts: 10 seconds below 1,500 requests per minute, 5 seconds from 1,500 through 3,000 requests per minute, and 3 seconds above 3,000 requests per minute. Keep callback processing within the applicable timeout.
- Allow for cached responses when retesting. Shopify may reuse a response for an identical request, with request identity based on details including variant IDs and quantities, box dimensions and weight, carrier service ID, origin and destination addresses, item weights, and signatures. Shopify documents a 15-minute cache for successful responses and a 30-second cache after an error. A repeated test may therefore not invoke the callback immediately.
- Check the customization’s input and rename behavior. A Delivery Customization can only use fields included in its input query. Shopify’s tutorial also says that when a title is renamed, the carrier name is automatically prepended and cannot be removed or changed through this API. These constraints affect how existing options can be presented; they do not enable rate calculation. See Shopify’s delivery customization tutorial.
What to collect for a store-specific diagnosis
Record the store plan, the CarrierService active state and linked location, the callback URL, recent callback request logs, callback duration and response body, cart items, destination, and whether a cached response could apply. Together, these details help distinguish an API mismatch from an eligibility, location, endpoint, response, or caching problem.
