If you need recurring checks across a larger catalog, product matching, price history, alerts, or repricing, a monitoring tool can package more of the ongoing work. Neither automation nor a vendor feature list proves that product matches or collected prices are accurate.
Shopify merchants can use third-party monitoring tools and apps, but Shopify’s API terms specifically restrict scraping or mining Shopify-defined resources. That platform rule is not a blanket statement about every independent public storefront. Choose between DIY and a service based on the work you need done, the operating burden you can support, and the terms governing each source.
What competitor price tracking involves
Scraping is the extraction of selected information from pages. A continuing price-tracking workflow needs more than extraction: it must check pages on a schedule, identify equivalent products, record timestamped observations, detect changes, and deliver findings in a usable form.
A monitoring service may bundle those steps into a dashboard, alerts, exports, integrations, or repricing features. Those capabilities vary by product and plan, and do not establish complete site coverage or accurate matching. For example, size, color, pack quantity, and variant differences can make two listings look comparable when they are not.

DIY scraping or a monitoring tool?
| Approach | Where it may fit | Work and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Custom scraper | A narrow set of stable pages, tailored fields or output, and a merchant able to maintain the workflow. | You control what is collected, how often, and where results go. You also own implementation, page-change repairs, failure handling, product-match checks, timestamps, and permission reviews. The sources do not establish a cost or catalog-size threshold at which DIY becomes uneconomical. |
| Monitoring service or app | Recurring monitoring that needs packaged matching, history, alerts, dashboards, integrations, or possibly repricing. | It may reduce the amount of collection infrastructure you operate, but coverage, matching quality, cadence, data access, and features depend on the vendor and plan. Check results and terms rather than assuming automation makes the data complete or correct. |
How to evaluate a monitoring workflow
Compare tools against the way you actually intend to use their data. Ask vendors for concrete answers about the following before committing:
- Catalog and competitor scale: Can it cover your products, variants, competitors, and sales channels?
- Product matching: How are equivalents identified across size, color, pack, and variant differences? Can you review or correct matches manually?
- Coverage and access: Which sites, marketplaces, pages, regions, and currencies are supported? What happens when pages are unavailable or access is restricted?
- Cadence and history: How often are checks run, and are observations retained with timestamps for review?
- Alerts and action: Do alerts make changes easy to act on? Does the product only report competitor prices, or can it also change your own prices?
- Data access: Are exports, API access, integrations, and retention controls available on the plan you need?
- Operating burden and total cost: Who resolves missing matches and failed checks? Compare subscription or usage charges plus staff time with the flexibility and maintenance demands of a custom workflow.
- Terms and compliance: Review the applicable terms, access controls, and laws for each target site and data use. Shopify’s API restrictions concern the specific Shopify resources described below.

Shopify’s restrictions are specific to Shopify resources
Shopify’s API License and Terms of Use, last updated February 27, 2026, state that users must not, except when authorized by Shopify in writing or where applicable law expressly prohibits the restriction, “scrape or mine the Shopify API, Merchant Data, any Merchant Store, the Services, or any aspect or portion thereof.” The terms also prohibit bypassing API restrictions. Shopify’s FAQ about partner terms updates says changes effective February 27, 2026 clarify data protections, developer roles, and existing scraping and mining restrictions.
These are Shopify’s contractual terms for the resources they specify, not a universal legal ruling about collecting information from every competitor’s independent public storefront. Before building a collector, review the terms and applicable rules for the particular site and data use; do not treat public visibility alone as permission.

Tools and examples Shopify identifies
Shopify’s overview, “Ecommerce Price Monitoring Tools: 10 Top Options”, published January 25, 2024, describes Prisync as offering competitor price tracking, dynamic-pricing suggestions, API access, and competitor stock data. It describes Price2Spy as offering real-time price tracking, competitor insights, dynamic-pricing rules, and price-elasticity analysis. The article also names Repricer, Skuuudle, Minderest, Competera, Dealavo, Intelligence Node, Wiser, and Omnia, and points merchants to Shopify App Store offerings including Pricefy, PriceMole, and Prisync.
These descriptions are useful for finding products to evaluate, not evidence that one service is more accurate or better suited to a particular store. The overview is dated, so confirm current availability, features, and plan terms directly with each provider.

PriceMole listing example
When checked October 4, 2026, the PriceMole Shopify App Store listing described competitor price and availability tracking, listing matches, alerts, historical data, trend analysis, dashboards, and repricing. It showed a Starter tier at $99 per month for 100 products, 50 channel connections, and four crawls per day. Those are changeable listing and vendor claims, not independent evidence of accuracy or a recommendation; verify the current listing and whether its limits meet your needs.

Price-monitoring services can generate bot traffic: automated visits that gather prices, inventory, or product information. Shopify’s guidance on monitoring bots notes that price-comparison sites and monitoring services may be among the sources of bot sessions. It describes bot filtering as a way to distinguish bot sessions in relevant analytics reports, while warning that blocking all bots can interfere with useful indexing and sharing.
