The ShopBot Desktop MAX is a compact CNC router with a current manufacturer-listed starting price of $12,548. ShopBot lists a 36 × 24-inch bed, a 1 hp spindle, standard 120 V power, and VCarve Pro CAD/CAM software. It may suit a small shop that needs those capabilities in a limited footprint, but whether it is worth the price depends on the size of your parts, the configuration you quote, and the workholding and setup resources you need.
How much does the ShopBot Desktop MAX cost?
ShopBot Tools lists the Desktop MAX starting at $12,548 on its product page, accessed October 4, 2026. The company directs buyers to request a quote, so treat that figure as a starting price rather than a guaranteed final price. Deck choice and other options can affect the configuration and quote. The price in the title’s matching review is historical: Make’s Kurt Hamel listed a $9,340 base price in 2017 and a tested price of $9,285 with a mini enclosure. Neither figure is current pricing. Hamel described the machine as a worthwhile upgrade from the smaller Desktop and Buddy 32 for buyers able to afford its then-$9,000-plus price; that was his 2017 assessment, not a current independent comparison. ShopBot’s current product page calls the bed 36 × 24 inches. Its June 2023 specification sheet lists a 36 × 25 × 5-inch work envelope. These are the manufacturer’s different labels, not interchangeable promises of usable cutting space. For context, Hamel’s 2017 review reported that a quarter sheet of plywood could be placed on the bed, but the machine cut only the first 36 inches in one setup; he described flipping the sheet end-to-end to work through it in two steps. That is a dated reviewer observation, not a current test or a guarantee that every sheet and setup will fit. Make’s review
What can it cut, and what does it require?
ShopBot describes the Desktop MAX as able to cut, drill, and carve wood, MDF, plastics, foams, vinyl, and aluminum. The product page identifies an industrial 1 hp spindle configuration and standard household 120 V power; the June 2023 specification sheet specifies 120 V at 15 A. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent evidence of cut quality, material capacity, or production rate. The spec sheet also lists a 240 in/min cut speed, 360 in/min jogging speed, and 0.00025-inch resolution. Those are stated machine specifications; resolution is not the same as measured accuracy or repeatability, and the figures do not establish how quickly or precisely a particular job will finish. The product page lists an aluminum T-slot deck and a universal vacuum hold-down deck. They are configuration choices; the available sources do not establish that one performs better for every job. Vacuum hold-down and edge clamps call for different workholding arrangements, so compare the material and part shapes you expect to machine with the deck options in your quote. Plan for dust collection as part of the shop setup, and verify compatibility before choosing a particular collector or accessory. What should buyers know about setup, support, and warranty?
ShopBot’s documentation index lists a Desktop MAX quick-start guide, handbook, user and programming references, power-tool safety information, material hold-down guidance, router-bit installation and collet instructions, vacuum-table setup, edge-clamp and enclosure resources, and setup videos. The availability of documentation does not guarantee that setup will be easy for every buyer; consider the time, workspace, and help you will need to get the machine ready for your work. The June 2023 specification sheet lists a two-year warranty. ShopBot says free live phone support is for original owners, online resources are available to all, and paid support plans are available for second-hand machines. Hamel’s 2017 review noted that the wasteboard may shift during shipping and advised centering it before running the manual’s surfacing and rabbet scripts. This is a dated setup tip from that review, not evidence of a universal current defect; follow the current manual and inspect your machine during setup. Make’s review
Is the ShopBot Desktop MAX worth the price?
It is most plausible for buyers whose parts fit the verified travel, who can provide the required power and dust collection, and who value the manufacturer’s stated spindle, software, documentation, and support model enough to justify a five-figure starting price. It is a weaker fit if your projects exceed the usable travel in one setup, if your shop cannot accommodate its power or accessories, or if the quoted configuration pushes beyond budget.
Before committing, compare other CNC routers using the same practical criteria rather than the “pro” label: usable X/Y/Z travel, workholding, spindle and material needs, power and footprint, included CAD/CAM and control software, setup resources, warranty, and the full current quote with deck and options. No independent current accuracy, repeatability, production-rate, or cut-quality test is established here, so the manufacturer’s resolution and speed specifications should not stand in for those results.
