A working web app is not yet a mobile product strangers can trust and install. Taking PromptSpend to iPhone and Android meant reusing its cost calculations while also solving for current price data, privacy, device-specific layout bugs, and app-store account requirements. After 15 years in operations and P&L roles, I learned that the release work was as much about operational discipline as code.
What PromptSpend does—and what its numbers mean
PromptSpend estimates published large-language-model API charges from a representative conversation or token counts combined with traffic assumptions. It can show an estimated cost per conversation and projected daily, monthly, and yearly totals, and compare up to four models against the same workload. Those figures are decision aids, not invoices: provider behavior, regional or negotiated prices, model changes, workload shape, and assumptions can all change actual charges.
The Canadian App Store listing describes inputs for prompt-cache writes, long-context tiers, reasoning assumptions, batch discounts, and conversation growth. It also lists saved scenarios, exports, receipts, educational guides, a price catalog with source and check dates, and optional email price alerts. The listing says native push notifications are not included in that release. Store details can vary by region and change over time. See the Canadian App Store listing.
How I carried the product from web to mobile
Share the arithmetic, not the platform work
I built the mobile app with Expo and React Native and extracted the cost engine into a shared package. The web app, API, MCP server, and mobile apps could then use the same arithmetic. That reduced the risk of platform-specific calculation differences, but it did not make the mobile experience or release process identical to the web one.

Make freshness part of the product
I chose not to bundle a static pricing file: a catalog frozen into an app could age after release. Instead, the app fetches the live catalog at launch. If that request fails, it uses the last good copy for up to 24 hours and displays a warning; after that, it refuses to calculate. The point is not to make every launch succeed at any cost. For a tool whose answer depends on current prices, a visible warning—or no answer—is more useful than false confidence.
At the time described in my September 2026 retrospective, the catalog covered about 80 models from 12 providers, was re-checked each morning, and carried a source and last-confirmed date for each price. Those figures describe that snapshot, not a guarantee about today’s catalog. As I put it: “A missing number is better than a confident wrong one.”

Privacy claims need to include feature exceptions
Prompt text is processed on-device for token counting and, according to the developer disclosures and App Store listing, is not uploaded or saved by PromptSpend. Shared outputs contain derived counts and costs rather than prompt text; saved scenarios and appearance settings stay on the device. The exception is optional email price alerts: signing up transmits the email address and alert choices the user submits.
The App Store listing reports no native account, advertising SDK, behavioral analytics, cross-app tracking, or tracking identifier. These are developer disclosures, not an independent security audit; Apple notes that app privacy information is not verified by Apple. The listing’s privacy details are the place to check for current disclosures.

Why a green test suite did not finish QA
My automated suite stayed green, but testing on an iPhone, an iPad, and a Galaxy A15 still surfaced issues. The handset cost $103 in my account of the work; that is a historical price, not a current deal or a recommendation. A physical device reveals questions automated logic tests cannot settle: whether controls fit, text wraps properly, and the interface remains usable on actual screens.
“tests prove the logic. Only a cheap physical phone proves the layout.” One Android phone is not proof that an app works across the Android device range; it is a practical way to catch real-device problems that a simulator or unit tests may miss. A shared calculation engine still needs platform-specific layout and interaction checks.

Store accounts can become part of the critical path
Apple enrollment and migration
I enrolled with Apple as an individual, then converted the account to an organization. The migration delayed iOS builds. This was my experience, not a statement that every developer will encounter the same delay; the practical lesson is to resolve the account structure early rather than treating store enrollment as a final upload step.
Google Play testing requirements
My Google Play account process involved a closed test and organization identity checks, including a D‑U‑N‑S number and website verification. I converted the account to an organization and learned to budget weeks rather than days for store logistics.

Separately, Google’s current help page says personal developer accounts created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers continuously opted in for at least 14 days before applying for production access. This applies to eligible personal accounts, not every developer, and satisfying the threshold allows an application—it does not guarantee approval. Build limits changed how I scheduled fixes
I used Expo’s cloud build service. Staying on its free tier, with a monthly iOS build cap, encouraged me to batch fixes and exhaust local and Android checks before spending an iOS build. That was a workflow choice under the plan limits I encountered, not a universal recommendation: the important point is to understand your build constraints early enough to avoid spending scarce builds on fixes that could have been caught locally.
What readers can verify about availability
The September 2026 retrospective says PromptSpend is live on both stores. The Canadian App Store listing identifies it as free in Developer Tools and lists iOS 16.4 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 16.4 or later for iPad. These are regional store details that may change. Android availability is author-reported here; no direct Google Play listing is cited. Check the Canadian App Store listing for its current status and compatibility information.

- Reuse the calculation core where it genuinely applies, but plan separate work for mobile screens, device behavior, and store release.
- If your product depends on changing data, show its source and freshness, define a fallback, and decide what it should do when that fallback becomes too old.
- Describe privacy by data flow: distinguish local processing from information transmitted by optional features.
- Use automated tests for logic and physical devices for layout and interaction; they answer different questions.
- Put developer-account setup and applicable testing requirements on the release calendar early.
- For cost estimates, test a representative workload and inspect assumptions and price freshness. The lowest modeled figure is not automatically the best model for the job.
