Shingrix commonly causes a sore arm and sometimes short-lived symptoms such as tiredness, muscle pain, headache, chills, fever, or nausea. These reactions usually resolve in two to three days. You can use an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if appropriate for you; even if you had common side effects after dose one, CDC says to get the second dose.
What side effects can you expect?
Shingrix, the recombinant zoster vaccine used in the United States, can cause reactions at the injection site as well as symptoms that affect the rest of the body. CDC says they can temporarily interfere with normal activities, but usually go away on their own in two to three days.
Arm and injection-site reactions

- Stomach pain or nausea
CDC reports that reactions occur more often in younger people. The trial figures below describe groups of participants; they cannot predict what one person will experience.

How to manage discomfort
CDC says an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help ease discomfort. This is optional general guidance, not a recommendation for a particular product or individual medication advice. If you are unsure whether a medicine is suitable for you, ask a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Should you get the second dose after side effects?
Yes. CDC recommends completing the two-dose Shingrix series even if you had common side effects after the first dose. For adults aged 50 and older, the doses are ordinarily given two to six months apart. Adults aged 19 and older with weakened immune systems also need two doses; when needed, their second dose may be given one to two months after the first. Follow your healthcare provider’s schedule for your situation.

When should you contact a healthcare provider?
Contact a healthcare provider if your symptoms are getting worse or are not improving. Ordinary vaccine reactions usually resolve within two to three days, but worsening or persistent symptoms are a reason to seek advice.
Get emergency help for signs of a severe allergic reaction
A severe allergic reaction is rare but may be life-threatening. Call 911 and seek emergency care for symptoms such as hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or weakness.

Can you report a possible side effect?
Yes. Patients and caregivers can report a possible reaction to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), an early-warning system co-managed by CDC and the Food and Drug Administration. A report helps monitor possible safety concerns; submitting one does not by itself establish that the vaccine caused the event.
