Shift and Seek is a community-created Among Us lobby ruleset in which impostors usually shapeshift into the crewmate they plan to kill. Crewmates try to finish their tasks; impostors try to eliminate the crew. Reports and meetings are commonly disabled, but there is no single universal rulebook, so check the host’s rules before the match starts.
How a Shift and Seek round works
The name is often shortened to SNS or SnS. Some players also use “Shift and Sneak,” so ask what the host means if the name is unclear.
In the documented More Gamemodes implementation, every player has an Engineer or Shapeshifter role. Crewmates work on tasks to win, while impostors must kill the crewmates. The defining twist is that an impostor is expected to shapeshift into the specific player they intend to kill.
The mode changes the usual flow of a round: the mod’s rules disable body reports, emergency meetings, and sabotage. Without reports or meetings, players cannot use those systems to share information or vote someone out; the round centers on task progress and avoiding kills.
#1 Best Overall
- Crewmate Edition Includes: See description below for complete details
- Life as a Crewmate: Complete all your tasks on the ship to win but watch out for Impostors. Report dead bodies and call emergency meetings to vote the Impostors out. Hope you chose correctly
- Play as an Impostor: Cause chaos, sneak around, and frame innocent bystanders. Winning involves killing off every Crewmate - think you’re a master of sabotage
- Customization: Choose how you want to play. Add more impostors, tasks, decrease visibility and more. All in style as you get to choose your favorite color, outfit, and hat
- Cross-platform: Play with your friends between PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, Android, and iOS
Which rules are fixed, and which depend on the host?
Shift and Seek is a community ruleset, not one official, standardized mode. The More Gamemodes documentation describes one implementation, while player accounts show that lobbies add or change rules. Do not assume that a rule from one lobby applies in another.
Common features
- Crewmates are typically given Engineer abilities, and impostors are typically Shapeshifters.
- Impostors are expected to shift into their intended target before killing.
- Crewmates aim to complete tasks; impostors aim to eliminate the crew.
- Reports and meetings are often disabled. The documented mod implementation also disables sabotage.
House rules to confirm
- Wrong-target kills: Some groups penalize a “miskill,” such as requiring the impostor to stand beside the body for a period of time. Community accounts differ on whether this rule is used and how long the penalty lasts.
- Venting: Whether impostors may vent can depend on the host’s settings.
- Sabotage: Some groups permit limited sabotage, such as Communications, even though the documented mod rules disable sabotage.
- Task protections: Some lobbies prohibit killing players while they are doing particular tasks.
- Other settings: The mod documentation lists host options for impostor venting, door closing, visibility, and instant shapeshifting. These are configurable details, not universal rules.
What to ask before joining a lobby
Clarifying the rules avoids disrupting a round built around different expectations. In particular, reporting a body or calling a meeting may break the intended format if those actions are prohibited.

- EASY TO LEARN, EXCITING TO MASTER – Simple rules and real-time play make the game accessible for newcomers, while varied role combinations create depth and replay value for experienced players
- EXPANDABLE & HIGHLY REPLAYABLE – No two sessions are the same, and expansions such as Daybreak, Vampire, or Alien introduce new characters and twists to build a deeper social deduction experience
- Ask whether reports and emergency meetings are disabled.
- Ask whether impostors may vent and what sabotage, if any, is allowed.
- Ask what happens after a wrong-target kill, if anything.
- Ask whether there are tasks during which killing is not allowed.
- Check whether the host uses any additional settings, such as door closing or instant shapeshifting.
Playing the modded implementation
The More Gamemodes project describes its software as an Among Us mod that adds game modes and roles, and says only the host needs the mod. Its README lists Among Us version 17.0.0; that is a repository-specific version note, not a promise that the mod works with every current game build or platform. Check the project documentation for compatibility before installing or hosting.
The repository also states that the project is not affiliated with or endorsed by Innersloth. A modded implementation and a lobby using the same community rules are not necessarily the same thing: players may organize house-rule games without following that mod’s exact settings.
