ShellCanvas is a local desktop app that groups SSH-server files, terminal sessions, text editing, and installable apps into separate graphical workspaces for each host. It uses the server’s existing SSH service rather than requiring a ShellCanvas agent. It is an early preview, however, and the project reports important gaps in platform validation. As of the project status reviewed in October 2026, Windows x64 installers are available but unsigned, Linux client support is not validated, and macOS SSH workflows are not yet validated.
What ShellCanvas does
Instead of treating a remote host as just a terminal connection, ShellCanvas gives each host a desktop-style workspace. You can switch between machines while keeping each one’s windows, folders, and terminal output associated with that host.
- Remote files: Browse files and folders over SFTP, queue transfers, monitor progress, and cancel transfers. The project says it avoids overwriting an existing item.
- SSH terminals: Open multiple independent shell sessions in movable windows.
- Text editing: Edit UTF-8 text files up to 256 KiB. Before saving, the app checks whether the remote file changed; it uses atomic replacement on servers that support it.
- Apps and themes: Install apps from a public GitHub repository or package file, and review the access they request. On Windows, installed apps run in an isolated frame with only approved access.
File browsing, editing, and transfers require SFTP. A shell connection alone is not enough for those operations; the project says OpenSSH provides SFTP.
How it connects and handles credentials
You can add a host manually or import an entry from ~/.ssh/config. The README documents authentication with a private key or password. ShellCanvas checks host keys against OpenSSH known_hosts and its own trust store: it shows a new host’s fingerprint for review before sign-in and blocks a connection when a known host’s key changes. The project also says it does not save passwords or passphrases.

These are behaviors described by the project, not the findings of an independent security audit. SSH itself is a protocol suite for encrypted services such as remote login and file transfer, as described by OpenSSH; that protocol context should not be mistaken for an audit of ShellCanvas.
What platforms and servers are validated?
ShellCanvas’s own status table describes a preview with uneven support. The project page and README can change as releases evolve, so check the current release notes and status before adopting it for a production workflow.

The server checks do not establish that every operation works across every server platform or SSH configuration. Confirm that both the client operating system and the server setup match your intended use.
Building ShellCanvas from source
The README lists Node.js 22 or later, Rust 1.93 or later, and the prerequisites for Tauri on the target platform. ShellCanvas is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The README says modified MPL-covered files remain MPL-covered when distributed; separate apps, themes, and adapters may use different licenses.

ShellCanvas may suit someone who wants to manage files and terminals on an SSH server in one graphical workspace, particularly if keeping each host’s tools together is more useful than having a terminal-only client. Before relying on it, compare these points with your actual needs:
