ShashChess is a free chess engine derived from the Stockfish family. It uses the Universal Chess Interface (UCI), so you typically connect it to a compatible chess GUI to analyze positions or play games; ShashChess itself is not a complete graphical chess application. Its distinctive stated aim is to apply chess ideas associated with Alexander Shashin’s positional styles, including Tal, Capablanca, and Petrosian.
What is ShashChess?
The ShashChess project describes the program as “a free UCI chess engine derived from Stockfish family chess engines.” In practical terms, it is the analysis and move-selection component, not the board-and-menu application most players use to interact with an engine. The project says its evaluation-function work draws on collaboration between Leela Chess Zero and Stockfish, and that its search can use standard and Q/self-reinforcement learning. These are descriptions of the project’s design; they do not establish comparative playing strength.
ShashChess’s stated distinction is its approach to positional styles based on Alexander Shashin’s chess theory. The README identifies Tal, Capablanca, and Petrosian styles, as well as combinations. Treat these as the engine’s design concepts, not proof that it plays stronger chess or that the underlying theory has been independently validated. How do you use ShashChess with a chess GUI?
Because ShashChess communicates through UCI, the usual workflow is to add the engine to a UCI-capable chess interface. The GUI provides the board and controls; the engine evaluates positions and returns moves or analysis. The repository mentions examples in bundled Stockfish documentation, but that does not confirm that a particular GUI, operating system, or ShashChess build is currently compatible.

- Check the current build. Visit the official ShashChess releases page and choose a release appropriate for your platform and processor architecture.
- Install or extract the engine. Follow the instructions included with the release. The precise installation steps depend on the operating system and package.
- Add the engine in your chess GUI. Look for the GUI’s engine-management or UCI-engine settings, select the ShashChess executable, and let the GUI initialize it. Labels and paths vary by application.
- Set resources and analysis options. Configure thread count and hash memory to suit your computer, then choose whether you need options such as MultiPV, Chess960, or pondering. Available settings depend on the build and GUI.
- Test it on a position before relying on it. Confirm that the GUI displays engine output and that any optional services or local files you enabled are available.
Choose a GUI only after checking its current UCI support and compatibility with your operating system and the ShashChess build you intend to use. UCI is protocol-level context, not a guarantee that a specific chess application supports a specific engine build.

The README documents both familiar engine controls and features aimed at more specialized workflows. Some features require external services, local files, or suitable hardware and architecture.

Use Anti Dancing Analysis only for deep analysis
The README warns that Anti Dancing Analysis is intended for deep analysis, not actual games or engine matches. By avoiding repetition, it can make the engine discard a winning line when repetition is necessary. If you are playing a game or running a match, turn this option off.
Is ShashChess free, and what does its GPL license mean?
The project describes ShashChess as free and says it is licensed under the GPL. Its README states that redistribution requires including the full source or a pointer to it, and that changes to the source must be made available under the GPL. This is the project’s licensing guidance, not legal advice; consult the license and its terms for a specific redistribution or commercial-use question.

Is ShashChess the right engine for you?
- Choose it if you want a free UCI engine and are interested in experimenting with the project’s Shashin-inspired style controls or other specialized features.
- Check first if your priority is a simple setup: you need a compatible GUI, and configuration can involve threads, memory, and optional dependencies.
- Match settings to the task: ordinary analysis, deep analysis, and live games do not necessarily call for the same options. In particular, the README cautions against Anti Dancing Analysis for games and engine matches.
- Verify compatibility yourself: the project materials do not establish compatibility for every current GUI, operating system, or build.
