1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGames pause to compile shaders because the graphics driver needs executable GPU code suited to your specific hardware and driver. Compiling likely-needed pipelines before gameplay can move much of that wait to startup or a loading screen, reducing one cause of in-game stutter—but it cannot guarantee every effect is ready or every hitch is gone.
What shader compilation does
A shader is a small program that tells the GPU how to perform part of a rendering task, such as lighting, shadows, surface effects, or post-processing. Games commonly include shader code in a high-level or intermediate form rather than a final executable for every possible PC graphics card.
The graphics API and driver translate that code into instructions for the GPU installed in the player’s system. Epic Games’ Unreal Engine engineers describe a path in which high-level code such as HLSL is translated to an API-defined intermediate representation and then into GPU-specific executable code by the driver. Different GPU vendors and generations use different instruction sets, so a compiled binary for one target generally cannot simply be used on another. That is why downloading a game’s shader assets does not necessarily mean the PC already has ready-to-run GPU code. Epic explains the shader and PSO compilation process.
A pipeline is more than one shader
Drawing an object can require several shader stages, such as vertex and pixel shaders, together with GPU state that controls matters such as blending, culling, and depth or stencil behavior. In modern graphics APIs, a particular combination may be represented by a pipeline state object (PSO). A PSO is not simply another name for a shader: it can bundle multiple shader stages and the state needed to use them together.

When a game requests a pipeline the driver has not compiled before, the driver may need to build it before the GPU can draw with it. Epic’s engineers describe the resulting interruption as everything stopping while the driver compiles a newly needed shader. The player may see a brief freeze or hitch when first encountering an effect or scene that needs that pipeline. Epic’s account of PSO precaching distinguishes this first-use work from ordinary rendering.
Why the pause may happen during play
With just-in-time compilation, the game asks for a pipeline when it is needed for drawing. If the driver has not already compiled it, the rendering path can wait for the result. The hitch is tied to encountering a new shader or pipeline combination—not to every frame requiring all shaders to be rebuilt.
Game engines and graphics drivers cache compiled results and retain objects to avoid repeating work unnecessarily. Even so, a cache may not contain every combination the game can use. A rarely seen effect or an unexpected mix of rendering settings can therefore still trigger compilation during play.

A hitch alone does not prove shader compilation is the cause. Asset streaming, traversal through a new area, CPU limits, and other work can also interrupt smooth rendering. The mechanisms described here explain shader-related pauses; they do not identify the cause of a particular game’s stutter.

Precompilation asks the game or platform to prepare likely-needed pipelines before they are needed for gameplay. Unreal Engine describes creating PSOs while a level loads so the driver can populate its cache before drawing begins. That moves at least some compilation cost earlier; a loading screen may take longer even as the first encounter with an effect becomes less likely to block on compilation. Epic documents PSO precaching and its timing options.
There are limits and trade-offs. Compilation uses CPU time, and a game may not hold a loading screen open long enough to prepare every possible pipeline. Background work can continue while the player uses an interactive menu, but a pipeline still compiling when the player reaches it may hitch. An uncommon combination can also fall outside the set prepared in advance.

Keeping precached PSOs available can use more memory. Discarding them after compilation saves memory, but retrieving a cached object later can still cause a smaller first-use micro-stutter. Precompilation therefore changes when and where work occurs; it does not erase every compilation, memory, or loading cost.
Why processing can recur
A driver cache can make later sessions smoother, but compiled results are specific to a combination of game content, graphics API, GPU, and driver. A driver update can invalidate or clear relevant cached data. Epic says a longer load on the first run after a driver update is normal. Unreal Engine’s cache documentation also notes that recorded PSOs depend on shader hashes and include a game version, so substantial content or rendering changes can make entries incompatible. Epic’s PSO cache documentation describes these version and cache considerations.
Different graphics APIs can require different cache data: Epic states that an Unreal Engine D3D12 PSO cache cannot be reused for Vulkan. So a “process shaders” step appearing again is not necessarily evidence that the game is broken, nor does it mean every shader is rebuilt on every launch. The trigger and frequency depend on the title, driver, API, platform, and cache policy; there is no universal player-side fix established for all games.

Why consoles and PCs handle shaders differently
A console gives developers a defined GPU target, making it practical to compile executable shaders specifically for that hardware and ship them with the game. PC games must account for many GPU vendors, generations, and driver versions, so one final executable shader package cannot serve every player’s system.
That variability also affects where compilation happens. Work can be done for a fixed target when the game is built, locally at launch or during a loading screen, in the background, or just in time during a new scene. Those approaches balance package and platform requirements against launch wait, local CPU and power use, memory, and the risk of a gameplay hitch.

- Developer-compiled shaders for a console: executable code prepared for a fixed hardware target.
- Bundled PSO data: game or engine data used to identify and prepare likely pipeline configurations; the driver may still produce hardware-specific executable code.
- Local driver cache: compiled results retained on the player’s device for later use when they remain compatible.
- Steam/Proton shader processing: a platform-related process that can prepare shader or pipeline data for supported games and configurations.
- Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery: a supported Windows 11 Direct3D 12 workflow that can distribute precompiled shader results through an integrated storefront.
These mechanisms differ in who prepares the data, where it is stored, and which hardware, API, game version, and platform can use it. A precompiled result for one API or GPU target should not be assumed to work everywhere.
Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery is a supported path, not a universal switch
Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 workflow that prepares shaders ahead of time and delivers the results when a player downloads a game. Its documented process is to create a State Object Database (SODB) for the game, test it by compiling it into a Precompiled Shader Database (PSDB), and deploy the SODB through a storefront. Microsoft’s ASD overview says use requires a supported Windows version, an ASD-capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration; it is not a setting that makes every game on every PC precompiled.
In a March 2026 DirectX update, Microsoft said AgilitySDK 1.619 added app-identity and statistics APIs, including visibility into PSDB cache hit rates. The same update described partial graphics programs as a forthcoming approach for reusing common graphics-program components in games whose number of PSOs makes full precompilation difficult. These are Microsoft’s descriptions of a developing platform workflow; availability and support can change. Read Microsoft’s March 2026 DirectX update.
Microsoft’s 2025 announcement reported that its engineering teams observed launch times in Avowed reduced “by as much as 85%.” That is a vendor-reported result for one named example, not an independently measured average or a guarantee for other games and systems. Microsoft’s 2025 ASD announcement provides the context for that claim.

- It happens after a driver update: the update may have invalidated cached results, so the driver or game has work to do again.
- It happens on first launch or first entry to a scene: the game may be preparing pipelines that were not already cached or precompiled.
- It happens repeatedly: game updates, driver changes, API differences, cache policy, or cache compatibility can be involved. The exact reason varies by title and system.
- The game hitches after processing finishes: shader compilation is only one possible cause. The processing screen alone does not diagnose later stutter.
There is no universal expected duration for shader processing, and the available official sources do not establish a cross-game average for how much precompilation reduces stutter. Epic has offered two useful examples, not general benchmarks: it says Fortnite can take around 20–30 seconds longer to load into a Battle Royale match when the driver cache is empty, while Microsoft reported the Avowed result above. Those figures apply to their respective examples and should not be treated as a prediction for another game or PC. Epic’s Fortnite example.
