Yes—you can use a Raspberry Pi as a private Git server. A straightforward setup is Raspberry Pi OS Lite, SSH access, and a bare Git repository on the Pi. You connect from other computers over SSH to clone, push, and pull. This provides Git transport and account-based access, not a browser interface, issue tracker, or managed user administration.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi model with compatible boot storage and a correctly rated power supply. Hardware and storage compatibility vary by model, so check the requirements for your specific board before buying or preparing media. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance covers setup requirements.
  • A computer on the same trusted local network for initial setup and Git access.
  • A way to write Raspberry Pi OS to the boot media. Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi Imager and Raspberry Pi OS Lite for a headless device that does not need a desktop environment. See the official setup instructions.

This guide keeps the server on a private home or office network. Making it reachable from the public internet is a separate security and networking decision; port forwarding is not required for the setup below.

Prepare Raspberry Pi OS for headless SSH access

A headless Pi runs without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse and is accessed over the network. Raspberry Pi Imager can configure the hostname, user account, network connection, and SSH during OS installation. Choose a hostname you can recognize, create the account you intend to use for Git, configure network access, and enable SSH. Raspberry Pi’s headless setup guidance explains the current Imager options.

SSH must be enabled before you can connect remotely. Raspberry Pi documents enabling it in Imager, using raspi-config, or using a boot-partition method; SSH is disabled by default unless it is enabled during setup. If you use the boot method, the documented ssh or ssh.txt file enables SSH at boot. Follow the current Raspberry Pi SSH instructions, since paths and setup tools can change between OS releases.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In Raspberry Pi Imager, select the Raspberry Pi OS Lite image and the storage device you prepared.
  2. Open Imager’s customization options and set the hostname, user account and password, network details, and SSH access. Use the current labels in Imager; they may vary by version.
  3. Write the image, safely remove the storage device, install it in the Pi, and power on the Pi.
  4. From a computer on the same network, connect using the username and hostname you configured: ssh <username>@<hostname>. For example, if your account is alice and the hostname is raspberrypi, use ssh alice@raspberrypi.local if that name resolves on your network. Accept the host key only if you expect to be connecting to this Pi.

If the hostname does not resolve, check that the Pi and client are on the same network and use the connection method supported by your network, such as the Pi’s local IP address. The example hostname is not guaranteed to work on every network.

Choose the account and repository permissions

The account that initializes the bare repository should own it, or the intended SSH account or group must have the filesystem permissions needed to read and write it. For a simple private setup, you can use the same account you created in Imager. This avoids a second account and makes ownership straightforward. A dedicated git account is another option, but you must connect as that account and arrange its SSH access.

The commands below use the Imager-created account, represented as <username>, and store the repository under that account’s home directory. Run them after logging into the Pi as that user. Do not run the repository-creation commands as a different account unless you deliberately set ownership and access accordingly.

Install Git and create a bare repository

A remote repository used for collaboration is normally bare: it contains Git’s repository data but no checked-out working tree. That makes it suitable as a central destination for pushes. Pro Git describes this setup and the bare-repository command in its server setup guide.

  1. Connect to the Pi over SSH if you are not already logged in: ssh <username>@<hostname>.
  2. Install Git with Raspberry Pi OS’s package manager: sudo apt update && sudo apt install git. If Git is already installed, check it with git --version.
  3. Create a directory for the repository and initialize it as bare: mkdir -p ~/git/project.git && git init --bare ~/git/project.git.

Because you run these commands as <username>, the repository is created beneath that account’s home directory and is owned by that account. Replace project.git with a meaningful repository name. If several people need write access, decide how their SSH accounts and filesystem permissions will grant access before relying on a shared repository; merely creating a bare repository does not configure multi-user permissions.

Add the Pi as an SSH remote and push

On the client computer, open a terminal in an existing Git project. Add the Pi’s repository as a remote, then push the branch you want to publish. The hostname and path must match your Pi’s network name and repository location.

git clone <username>@<hostname>:~/git/project.git

After making and committing a change in one working copy, push it with git push. In another clone, run git pull to retrieve that change. These tests confirm the basic SSH Git workflow; they do not create a web interface or configure public access.

What SSH and a bare Git server do—and do not—provide

SSH provides an authenticated, encrypted connection for Git operations. Each user needs SSH access to the Pi; SSH alone does not provide anonymous read access. A basic bare repository also does not provide browser-based browsing, issue tracking, or web-based user management. Pro Git’s server guide notes that a basic account arrangement can also allow shell access unless command restrictions are added. Do not assume that creating a bare repository confines an account to Git commands.

For this small private-network setup, use SSH accounts and repository ownership that match the people who need access. A public read-only repository or managed collaboration features require a different or additional service configuration.

When to use the Pi instead of a hosted Git service

Self-hosting gives you control over where the repository lives, but you take responsibility for setup and maintenance. A hosted service is generally easier to set up and maintain, while keeping the code on another provider’s infrastructure. Pro Git summarizes the trade-off: “Running your own server gives you a lot of control and allows you to run the server within your own firewall, but such a server generally requires a fair amount of your time to set up and maintain.” See Pro Git’s server summary.
