To make an external hard drive available to devices around your home, connect it to a router that explicitly supports USB storage sharing, enable the router’s sharing feature, then connect from each computer using the network path and protocol in the router’s manual. A USB port alone does not guarantee file-sharing support: check the exact router model, supported drive formats, power needs, and access controls first.

Choose how to put the drive on your network

There are three practical approaches. Which one fits depends on the equipment you already have and whether the drive needs to remain available when a computer is off.

Method How it works Best fit
Router USB storage sharing Attach the drive to a router with a documented storage-sharing feature, then connect over the local network using the router’s supported protocol. Sharing files without keeping a computer running, if your router supports the required drive and clients.
Computer-hosted share Connect the drive to a computer and share its folder over the network using that computer’s operating-system sharing features. When the router does not support USB storage sharing and a suitable computer can stay on while others need access.
Dedicated NAS storage Use a network-attached storage device designed to provide shared storage. A persistent, dedicated storage service rather than an occasional share from a router or computer. Confirm the features of a specific NAS before buying.

Router sharing is often the simplest option when the feature is already available, but support varies by model and firmware. Manufacturer instructions describe different protocols and interface steps, so do not assume another router uses the same menus or network address.

Check router and drive compatibility before connecting

Look up the router’s exact model number and its current manual or support page. Confirm that its USB port supports storage sharing—not only charging, printer support, or media indexing—and check these details:

  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Which drive filesystems and partition layouts are supported, and whether there are capacity or partition-count limits.
  • Whether the router can power the drive or the drive needs its own adapter. NETGEAR says that a USB drive with a power supply must use it when connected to the router. NETGEAR ReadySHARE support
  • Whether the router supports your drive enclosure. TP-Link notes that compatibility varies by model and is not guaranteed for external enclosures, particularly multi-bay models. TP-Link USB storage troubleshooting
  • Which sharing protocols, authentication settings, and client operating systems the router supports.

Do not reformat a drive just to make it work with the router unless its manual confirms a suitable format and you have backed up its contents. Formatting can erase the data.

Connect the drive and enable router sharing

  1. Connect the drive. Plug it into the router’s USB port and connect its power adapter if it has one or its documentation requires one.
  2. Wait for detection. Open the router’s admin interface and check its USB or storage status. On NETGEAR’s documented setup, readiness may take up to two minutes; other routers can differ. NETGEAR ReadySHARE support
  3. Turn on the sharing feature. Use the router’s documented USB storage, file-sharing, or equivalent settings. Confirm the drive or shared folder appears before trying to connect from a computer.
  4. Set access controls. If the router offers secure sharing or user accounts, configure them and use the credentials when connecting. TP-Link recommends enabling Secure Sharing to help prevent unauthorized access to shared files. TP-Link USB sharing configuration guide
  5. Use the router’s safe-removal control before disconnecting. If the interface provides one, select it before unplugging the drive. Linksys recommends using its Safely remove drive control to help avoid data loss or corruption. Linksys USB storage overview

Open the shared drive from Windows or macOS

Windows

  1. In File Explorer, enter the router’s documented network address in the address bar. For the TP-Link setup in its US guide, the examples are \tplinkwifi.net or the router’s LAN IP address; other routers may use a different name or path. TP-Link USB sharing configuration guide
  2. If prompted, sign in with the account configured in the router’s sharing settings.
  3. To keep the share easy to reach, map it as a network drive using the path and steps documented for your router and Windows version. A TP-Link ISP guide describes mapping a folder from the router address. TP-Link guide to accessing a USB drive over the network

If the drive is missing from File Explorer’s Network view, try entering the documented network path directly. Browsing the Network view and connecting to a known SMB path are different; discovery can fail even when direct access works.

macOS

  1. In Finder, choose Go > Connect to Server.
  2. Enter the SMB address specified in the router’s manual, then select Connect.
  3. Enter the router share’s configured username and password if prompted. The address and account requirements depend on the router. TP-Link USB sharing configuration guide

Choose the right sharing protocol for the device

For ordinary access to files from computers, use the protocol and network path the router documents—often SMB. Some router instructions also describe FTP for local access. These options are not interchangeable on every model, so follow the router’s specific directions.

Media-server sharing is a separate feature from general file access. For example, Linksys documents DLNA/UPnP AV support on compatible models; a television or media player must support the relevant method, and the router’s media server may need to be enabled. A device that cannot browse a media library may still be able to access files through a different supported route. Linksys USB storage overview

Troubleshoot a drive that does not appear or open

The router does not detect the drive

  • Recheck that the exact router model supports USB storage sharing.
  • Use the drive’s own power supply if required; insufficient power can prevent detection.
  • Check filesystem and partition compatibility in the router manual.
  • Try a supported enclosure or connection arrangement if the router documentation identifies enclosure limitations. Do not assume every multi-bay enclosure will work.
  • Check the router interface for a status message after allowing time for detection.

The router sees the drive, but Windows cannot open it

  • Confirm storage sharing is enabled and use the share name or LAN address shown in the router’s instructions.
  • Try the direct SMB path rather than relying only on Network browsing.
  • Verify the username and password configured for the share.
  • TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide discusses Windows network discovery and SMB-version compatibility as possible causes. Its SMBv1 client suggestion applies to affected legacy configurations; do not enable older protocol support unless the router and operating-system requirements call for it. TP-Link USB storage troubleshooting

Finder cannot connect on a Mac

Use Finder’s Go > Connect to Server command with the exact SMB address from the router manual, then check the credentials configured for the share.

A media player cannot find the files

Check whether you are trying to use general file sharing or the router’s media-server feature. Confirm that the router supports and has enabled the relevant DLNA/UPnP AV option and that the playback device supports it. Linksys USB storage overview

Understand local access, remote access, and performance

A local network share is not automatically a secure remote-access service. TP-Link’s cited guide describes FTP for its remote-access method and says SMB is not supported remotely; other manufacturers may document different arrangements. Follow the exact router’s instructions and security settings rather than exposing a local share or assuming it is reachable from outside the home. TP-Link USB sharing configuration guide

There is no general speed figure that applies to router-attached drives. Performance depends on the router, USB interface, drive, network connection, and client. Copy a representative file over your own network to see whether the result suits your use; do not infer performance from the presence of a USB port alone.

Use the limits documented for your exact router

Compatibility specifications are model-specific. For example, the FRITZ!Box 7682/latest FRITZ!OS guide describes up to four partitions, each up to 4 terabytes, for that platform; those figures are not general limits for all routers. The guide also documents a powered USB hub as a remedy for its own USB 2.0 power limit, which should not be applied to other router models without their documentation.
