Before you settle in with a new Roku streaming player or Roku TV, check these nine settings. The menu paths below are starting points: labels and options can differ by model, Roku software version, and streaming app. Checking a setting does not mean you need to change it; choose based on your privacy preferences, accessibility needs, data limits, and connected equipment.

1. Check for a software update

Roku setup may install software updates automatically, but you can run a manual check afterward. Go to Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Roku recommends updating the device and the app when a streaming-app feature is not working. Roku’s app and captions guidance and its Express 4K setup instructions describe updates and setup.

2. Confirm the display type and 4K/HDR support

Open Settings > Display type (the exact label or location can vary) and check that Roku is using a mode your television supports. For 4K or HDR, the entire connection matters: the Roku model, TV, HDMI cable, soundbar or receiver, and the HDMI input must all support the format you want. Roku explains setup for a Streaming Stick 4K and provides HDR troubleshooting guidance.

If an HDR picture looks wrong or a device in the chain is incompatible, try a lower mode supported by your equipment, such as 4K without HDR or 1080p. The goal is a stable picture across the actual HDMI chain, not simply selecting the highest option shown.

3. Decide whether to enable Automatic Content Recognition

On supported devices, look under Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience for Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). Roku says ACR can support features such as More Ways to Watch. This is a privacy decision, not a required setup step.

Roku states that data collected or used while ACR was enabled is retained even if you later disable the feature. Consider that retention detail when deciding whether the related features are worth enabling. See Roku’s ACR information.

4. Review personalized advertising controls

Roku offers controls for restricting certain sensitive ad categories and hiding some ads on the home screen. Their scope is limited: these preferences apply to non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers, not all video advertising. Category preferences also require Personalized Ads to be enabled. Check Roku’s advertising preference guidance for the available controls on your device.

5. Choose whether Bandwidth Saver suits your viewing

Find the setting at Settings > Network > Bandwidth saver. Roku says it prompts after four hours without activity from the remote or mobile app; if you do nothing, playback stops. That can help avoid idle streaming if your internet plan has a data cap, but it can interrupt long passive viewing. Turn it on or off according to that tradeoff. The four-hour interval is Roku’s stated product behavior, not an independent measurement. Details are in Roku’s Bandwidth Saver guidance.

6. Check captions on the Roku and in each app

Start at Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode. Then check the streaming app’s own playback or settings menu: some apps use their own caption controls, and captions are available only when the program supports them. If captions do not appear, checking only the Roku-wide setting may not be enough. Roku explains both caption controls in apps and device accessibility settings.

7. Check the Screen reader setting

Settings > Accessibility > Screen reader controls spoken navigation on supported devices and software. It can help people who want menus read aloud. If Roku starts speaking menu items unexpectedly, this is the setting to check. Roku also documents a shortcut: press the remote’s Options/Star button four times to toggle the screen reader. Availability can vary by device and software; see Roku’s accessibility instructions and Screen reader guidance.

8. Make the Home Screen easier to use

Look in Settings > Home screen for options such as tile size, recommendation rows, and Quick Access visibility. Which controls appear—and how the screen looks—can differ across Roku devices and interface versions. Roku addresses the common question “Why does my Roku home screen look different?” If an option in a guide is missing, check your model’s own menus rather than assuming setup failed.

9. Compare Volume mode with Off

On supported Roku devices, check Settings > Audio > Volume mode or open the playback Options menu. Leveling or night modes can make listening more consistent in some situations. Roku warns that volume modes can convert some surround formats to stereo, however. If you use a soundbar or receiver, compare the modes and choose between more consistent perceived loudness and preserving the surround format where applicable. See Roku’s volume mode guidance.

Do I need to buy anything to check these settings?

No. These are settings on a Roku device you already own. A compatible HDMI cable may matter if you are troubleshooting a 4K/HDR connection, but it is not universally required; check what every component in your setup supports before replacing anything. Roku identifies Streaming Stick 4K model 3820 in its setup guidance. In that same Express 4K setup guidance, Roku states: “Roku never charges activation or support fees.”
