To set up Google Search Console, add a property that matches the part of your site you want to monitor, verify ownership using an available method, then inspect important URLs and review indexing alerts. A verified property gives you access to reports; it does not mean every page is indexed or will appear in search.

Choose the right property scope

Search Console properties determine which URLs appear in your reports. Choose a Domain property for a domain-wide view, or a URL-prefix property when you want a narrower scope or need an eligible verification method other than DNS.

Property type What it covers Verification Choose it when
Domain All protocols and subdomains for the domain, including common www and non-www variants. DNS record for ordinary properties, except certain Google-hosted properties. You want a domain-wide view and can edit the domain’s DNS.
URL-prefix Only URLs that begin with the exact protocol and prefix entered. An https:// property does not cover http://; one host does not automatically cover another subdomain. DNS or other eligible methods, including HTML file upload, HTML tag, Google Analytics, and Google Tag Manager, subject to method-specific requirements. You need a narrower scope, or DNS access is unavailable but you can use an eligible alternative.

Google explains the coverage and setup differences in its property setup guide and URL-prefix property documentation.

Add and verify your property

  1. Open Search Console and add a property. Enter a domain without a protocol or path for a Domain property, or enter the full protocol and any desired path for a URL-prefix property. Follow the current property setup flow.
  2. Complete the offered verification method. For a Domain property, add the supplied DNS record through your DNS manager, then return to Search Console and verify. DNS changes may take time to propagate, so an immediate unsuccessful check is not conclusive.
  3. Meet the method’s specific requirements. For HTML file upload, place the unmodified file at the specified root location and ensure it is publicly accessible at the given address; Google does not follow redirects to find it. For the HTML-tag method, the homepage must be public and the tag must be in its <head>. Analytics verification depends on the required account permissions and an unmodified tag in the correct page location. These methods apply to URL-prefix properties. See Google’s site ownership verification instructions.
  4. Use your platform’s instructions if applicable. A managed website platform may require a particular type of access or setup. Do not remove a verification file or tag after verification unless another valid verification method remains: removing the file can end ownership, and Google periodically checks for the tag.
  5. Confirm the property scope. In the property selector, check the host, protocol, and path. A URL-prefix property for one variant does not include other protocols or hosts, so a mismatch can explain missing data.

New properties may not show data immediately. Google’s getting-started guidance describes the service and its data availability.

Run the first checks in Search Console

Inspect the homepage and important pages

Use URL Inspection for the homepage and a few pages that matter to your visitors. Review whether Google has a recorded crawl, whether fetching succeeded, whether indexing is allowed, and which canonical URL Google selected. If a page is new or you have just fixed it, run the live URL test: it checks the current version, while the inspection report reflects what Google previously knew.

If the live test looks good, you can request indexing. That asks Google to try again; it does not guarantee when a page will be crawled or that it will be included. Google also cautions that “URL is on Google” is not a guarantee that the page will appear in Search results. See Inspect and troubleshoot a single page.

Review Page Indexing for meaningful patterns

The Page Indexing report is an aggregate view, not a list of errors that all require action. Some URLs are appropriately not indexed, and URLs Google does not know may not appear in report totals. Focus on important pages, sudden changes, and signs of accidental crawling or indexing blocks. Google’s guide to checking whether Google has found your pages explains how to interpret the report.

Check your sitemap and internal links

Make sure your sitemap is current and submit it in Search Console where useful. Also confirm that important pages can be reached through ordinary links on your site. A sitemap can help Google discover URLs, but it does not guarantee indexing; new pages may take days or longer to surface. Google’s basic usage guidance covers sitemap and URL Inspection checks.

Look at Performance once data is available

Review clicks and impressions after the property has accumulated data. Compare like periods and account for normal weekly or holiday variation before treating a change as a problem. Revisit Search Console after meaningful site changes, as Google recommends in its website-owner guidance.

Troubleshoot missing pages and data

  • No data appears: Check that you selected the right property, especially its protocol, hostname, and path, then allow time after verification. A property for the wrong URL variant may not include the site traffic you expect. Google’s indexing-problem guidance describes common host-variant issues.
  • A page seems absent from search: It may be indexed but rank too low for the query to be visible. A site query can provide a quick indication; URL Inspection gives page-specific status. Google’s missing-page troubleshooting guide lays out the checks.
  • A submitted page is not indexed yet: Do not assume a fault immediately. Google advises allowing at least a week after a sitemap submission or indexing request before treating the absence as a problem; this is guidance, not a promise that indexing will happen within that time.
  • A validation request is in progress: Fix all affected instances first and avoid repeatedly restarting validation while it runs. Validation applies to the report’s scope and can be filtered to a sitemap subset. See Google’s validation details.
  • The URL is indexed but does not appear for an expected search: Indexing does not guarantee ranking or visibility for every query. Search Console’s URL Inspection guidance notes that an “URL is on Google” result does not guarantee appearance in Search.
