To set up a standard Xfinity gateway, connect it to an active coax outlet and power, then activate it in the Xfinity app. The app checks the connection and guides you through choosing a WiFi name and password. If you live in a WiFi Ready Apartment or have a fiber-based setup, check the instructions for your property and equipment first; the connection steps can differ.

Before you start: check your kit and account

A typical Xfinity Internet or Voice Getting Started Kit includes a leased gateway, a power cord, and a coax cable. The coax cable may not be included in fiber-to-the-unit installations. Xfinity says you do not need tools. Have a phone, tablet, or computer available, along with your Xfinity ID and password. A Primary or Manager account user can activate the gateway in the app.

Check that you have the equipment intended for your service and that you can reach an active coax outlet. Xfinity identifies an outlet that previously provided service as a likely candidate. If your home or apartment has different equipment or connection instructions, follow those instead of assuming a coax gateway is the right setup.

Connect and activate a standard Xfinity gateway

  1. Choose a location. Put the gateway in an open area rather than a cramped space, and place it at least a few feet above the floor.
  2. Connect the cables. Attach the coax cable between the wall outlet and the gateway, tightening it by hand. Connect the gateway’s power cord and plug it in.
  3. Wait for readiness. Give the gateway time to start. Light patterns vary by model, so use the packaging or app prompts for your specific device rather than relying on a single universal light sequence.
  4. Start activation in the Xfinity app. Sign in with an eligible Xfinity ID and follow the on-screen instructions. If you are replacing a gateway and do not see an activation prompt, go to Account > Set up equipment or devices > Xfinity Gateway or Modem.
  5. Run the connection check. Follow the app’s prompts. If it reports that the outlet is inactive, connect the gateway to another coax outlet and run the check again.
  6. Set your WiFi credentials. Choose a WiFi name and password, or reuse the name and password from your previous network. Reusing them may allow devices to recognize and reconnect to the network. If you change either credential, reconnect devices using the new details.

Xfinity’s new-customer activation page says the process may take a few minutes, while its app activation instructions estimate about 20 minutes. Allow time for the app’s full process rather than treating either estimate as a guaranteed finish time.

Apartment and fiber setups may use different steps

WiFi Ready Apartment

In a WiFi Ready Apartment, the gateway may already be installed in a media panel and connected to a cable outlet. Xfinity says residents can activate through the app without a separate kit or technician visit. Check your property-specific instructions to confirm what is already installed and what you need to do.

Fiber or Ethernet equipment

Fiber-only properties may use a pre-installed fiber gateway. Xfinity also describes some fiber-delivered apartment setups in which residents connect their own Ethernet router and cannot activate through the Xfinity app. These are distinct arrangements, so use the instructions for your property and equipment rather than applying the standard coax steps to every fiber installation.

If activation fails or gets stuck

  • Check the connections. Make sure the coax cable is firmly attached at the wall and gateway, and confirm the power connection is secure.
  • Try another outlet. If the app says the outlet is inactive, connect the gateway to a different coax outlet and repeat the app’s connection check.
  • Restart the gateway. Unplug it for 30 seconds, reconnect the power, wait for it to start, and retry activation in the app.
  • Use the app’s equipment path. When replacing an existing gateway, open Account > Set up equipment or devices > Xfinity Gateway or Modem if the app does not offer setup automatically.

A coax cable is normally included in a standard kit, and tools are not needed. A replacement cable is relevant only if yours is missing or cannot reach an active outlet.

Do you need a WiFi extender?

An extender is not required to activate a gateway. Xfinity’s instructions say to activate the gateway first; if you later have a coverage problem, place an extender in a room about halfway between the gateway and the area with weak coverage. The Xfinity app guides extender activation.
