For a new or reset television, the five essentials are placement and connections, the correct HDMI input, a compatible 4K/HDR signal path, a sensible picture preset, and audio routing. Menu names and available features vary by TV brand, model, region, and connected equipment, so use your manuals to confirm the exact ports and settings.
1. Place the TV and plan the connections
Before connecting anything, check the television’s manual and identify where its HDMI inputs, audio-return port, and power connection are located. Decide where any external player, game console, receiver, or soundbar will sit, and make sure the cables can reach without being strained.
Placement advice can depend on the equipment. For example, Roku’s soundbar guidance recommends centering the soundbar with the screen and avoiding a position where sound reflects from a nearby flat surface. Follow the instructions for the specific soundbar or audio system rather than treating that advice as universal. Roku soundbar setup guidance
2. Connect each device and select its HDMI input
Connect an external source to an available HDMI port on the TV, then switch the TV to the input that port uses. If a streamer is plugged into HDMI 2, for example, select HDMI 2 in the TV’s input or source menu. Google’s setup instructions for the optional Google TV Streamer (4K) likewise say to connect it to an available HDMI port and select that input. Google TV Streamer setup

An external player is not required if the television’s built-in apps meet your needs. Use one only when you want its features or need it for a particular source.
3. Check the full 4K and HDR signal path
A 4K-capable TV does not guarantee that an external device will output 4K or HDR. The source, the TV input, any receiver or soundbar between them, and the cable connection all need to support the format and content being used. Check the manuals for each component and connect the source to an input specified as compatible.

Roku’s guidance for its described 4K setup says that if a device in the connection does not support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, playback may fall to a lower resolution. NVIDIA also directs users to a compatible input and notes that some 4K streaming paths require HDCP 2.2. These are requirements described for particular setups, not a universal specification for every 4K device or format. Roku 4K setup guidance NVIDIA 4K and HDR guidance

5. Set audio output for speakers or an audio system
For the TV’s built-in speakers, select the TV speakers in its sound or audio-output settings. To use a soundbar or receiver with ARC/eARC, connect the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC/ARC to the corresponding ARC or eARC port on the audio device. Check both manuals for the correct ports and supported formats.

ARC (Audio Return Channel) can carry TV audio back to a compatible soundbar over the HDMI connection. If there is no sound, confirm that the TV and audio system are connected at their audio-return ports and that the TV’s audio output is set to the external system.
