I use WinGet to install the applications I choose on a new Windows PC, save that package list for a rebuild, and review updates over time. It helps make application setup deliberate and repeatable; it does not decide which apps are unwanted or remove Windows components for you.
Start with the apps you actually want
“Bloat-free” is a personal choice, not a result WinGet measures. I start by writing down the applications I need for work and everyday use, rather than applying a universal removal list. WinGet is a Windows package manager for finding and installing applications; the documentation cited here does not establish that it removes built-in Windows components, disables telemetry, frees a specific amount of storage, or improves measured performance.
Keep this list focused on application packages. For any app you do not recognize, decide separately whether you want it before changing or removing anything from Windows.

Package names, identifiers, manifests, and versions can change. Search for an application, then inspect the candidate package and its selected installer before installing it. Microsoft documents these command forms in its WinGet install command reference:

winget search <query>
winget show --id <Package.Id>
winget install --id <Package.Id> --exactReplace <query> and <Package.Id> with the application search term and the ID shown in your results; they are placeholders, not literal values to run. Using an exact ID narrows the selection. Without an exact match, WinGet’s default search is case-insensitive substring matching across package name, ID, and moniker, so a broad query can return multiple candidates. Use search and the package details to confirm that you have the intended application and installer.
Do not assume every installer is silent or behaves the same way. Package agreements and source agreements are separate, and accepting package agreements does not accept optional bundled components. Review the prompts and installer details rather than treating an unattended command as a guarantee of a clean install.

Install one app or a deliberate batch
Use individual installs when you want to review each choice
Installing packages one at a time makes it easier to verify the selection and respond to each installer. It suits a short app list or a setup where you want to make decisions as you go.
Use one command for a small batch
WinGet can install multiple package IDs in one command, processing them sequentially. Use the exact IDs you verified; do not copy an unreviewed package list from someone else. The install reference describes this behavior and command options: Microsoft Learn: Install command (winget).

Use configuration for a broader repeatable setup
For more than an app list, a WinGet Configuration file can express package installations alongside system settings. That offers broader setup scope, but also makes review more important: read the file and check the credibility of its referenced resources before running it. Microsoft’s configuration guidance explicitly recommends those checks. Keep configuration readable, with entries you understand, rather than treating it as a trusted script simply because it is a configuration file.
Save the package list for a rebuild
When you want to reuse a package list, winget export creates a JSON file of apps and winget import reads a JSON file and attempts to install its specified apps serially. Microsoft documents export and import as ways to share or restore an environment, but the file is a useful record—not a guarantee that every app will be available or reproduce identically on another PC.

Review the resulting file and the import output, and handle unmatched or unavailable applications separately. See the export command reference and import command reference.

Preview updates before upgrading everything
Run winget upgrade without arguments to see available upgrades. If the proposed updates look right, winget upgrade --all attempts to update installed apps for which WinGet has available updates. Microsoft documents both commands and their limits in the upgrade command reference.

- Apps with unknown versions may not be recognized as having a newer version.
- Pinned packages can be skipped by upgrade operations unless included according to the pin settings.
- WinGet does not guarantee that every installed app will update; inspect results and handle exceptions individually.
A pin is a control over WinGet’s upgrade behavior, not a promise that the application can never update. A pinned app may still upgrade on its own or outside WinGet; the pin type determines how WinGet’s upgrade operations treat it.
Keep package sources in view
WinGet discovers packages through sources. Microsoft lists these default sources: msstore for the Microsoft Store catalog, winget for the WinGet Community Repository of applications, and winget-font for a font repository. The winget source command can list, update, add, remove, or reset sources. Because sources determine where discovery and installation data come from, use sources you trust, as Microsoft advises in its source command reference.
Quick Recap
Choose the workflow that fits the setup
| Workflow | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Individual installs | A short list or a setup where you want to inspect each choice as you go. | More hands-on, but each package is easy to review. |
| Multiple package IDs in one command | A small, already-verified list. | Packages install sequentially; you still need to choose and verify the IDs. |
| Export and import | Keeping a package list for another PC or a rebuild. | Useful for restoring packages, but unmatched or unavailable apps can prevent a complete restore. |
| WinGet Configuration | A repeatable setup that includes packages and system settings. | Broader scope requires careful review of the configuration and the credibility of its resources. |
| Preview, then upgrade all | Routine maintenance when you want to review candidates before asking WinGet to update available apps. | Unknown versions and pin settings can affect what is detected or upgraded. |
