This works only if the file’s streams and container are compatible with your output and YouTube’s live ingest requirements. For multiple VODs, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases.
Choose the right no-re-encode method

FFmpeg describes stream copy as fast and without quality loss from an encode, because it copies compressed packets rather than decoding and encoding them. But -c copy cannot change a codec, bitrate, resolution, keyframes, or apply filters; it does not make incompatible files compatible. Inspect your VOD before building a command
Check every file’s container, video and audio codecs, stream count, time bases, duration, and timestamps. These determine whether stream copy and concatenation are plausible. There is no general guarantee that an uninspected gaming VOD will work as-is.
Use an FFmpeg media-inspection tool such as ffprobe to review those properties. Confirm that the output will contain the audio and video streams you want; files with extra tracks or differing layouts may need explicit stream mapping or preparation. A stream-copy command cannot repair malformed timestamps, missing streams, or incompatible encoded properties.

Loop one VOD indefinitely
Adapt this command pattern to your file and YouTube stream details:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i "gameplay.mp4" -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"- Replace
gameplay.mp4with the path to your VOD. - Keep
-stream_loop -1before the-iit applies to. The value-1means loop indefinitely. - Keep
-c copyonly if the source’s streams can be carried in the chosen output format and meet the ingest requirements. This pattern uses FLV output, commonly used with RTMP-family ingest; validate that your source streams and FFmpeg build support it. - Replace the destination with the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish the key or leave it visible in public logs, screenshots, or shared command history.
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream, inspect picture and audio throughout a loop boundary, and stop FFmpeg when you want the feed to end.
This is a command pattern, not a verified universal command: input container, stream mapping, codec compatibility, and current YouTube settings can require adjustments. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option in its official documentation.

Play a playlist of VOD files
For several files, the concat demuxer presents them sequentially as one input. Create a text file such as vods.txt, with paths in the intended playback order:
file 'part-1.mp4'
file 'part-2.mp4'
file 'part-3.mp4'Then use this pattern to stream the list once:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i "vods.txt" -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"-re reads the input at its native rate, which is generally appropriate when sending a file as a live feed. If all files are in a safe relative-path format, you may be able to omit -safe 0; that option permits paths the demuxer otherwise rejects, so use it only with a list you control. To repeat a concatenated list indefinitely, test applying -stream_loop -1 before the concat input’s -i with your FFmpeg version and files. Looping-list behavior and timestamp edge cases can vary; confirm it in a private test rather than assuming every playlist loops seamlessly.

The concat demuxer requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases across files. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps using file durations; inaccurate durations can create artifacts, while streams of unequal lengths can leave gaps. Review the concat demuxer documentation and the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating media. The concat demuxer is distinct from the concat filter: the demuxer is the no-re-encode route, while filtering or changing streams may require decoding and encoding.
Check the source against YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS and CBR. These are ingest requirements and recommendations, not transformations: copy mode preserves what the VOD already contains. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance, which may change.

YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. The selected figures below are YouTube’s 2026 values, not universal targets for other codecs or profiles:

If your source’s codec or encoded properties do not fit the profile you intend to stream, stream copy cannot change them. You must either accept a compatible profile that matches the source or prepare/re-encode the video outside the no-re-encode workflow. Re-encoding adds processing and can change quality; it is the option when you need to alter codec, bitrate, keyframes, resolution, or apply filters.

Connect YouTube and check upload capacity
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into your FFmpeg destination. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains where to find them. Treat the key like a password.
- Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension to RTMP.
- Run an upload speed test on the connection that will send the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the outgoing bitrate and testing before the event. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Start a private or unlisted test and monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as the local FFmpeg output. Check video and audio, especially across loop or file boundaries.
A live session also depends on YouTube’s stream configuration and a stable outbound connection. Stopping FFmpeg stops the source feed. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance states that live streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; do not assume an indefinitely running encoder creates one uninterrupted archive.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube rejects the feed or reports a format issue: Check the actual codecs, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format against the current encoder guidance. If a property is unsuitable,
-c copycannot change it; prepare a conforming file or use an encoding workflow. - FFmpeg errors when opening the output: Confirm the destination format is supported by your FFmpeg build and that the copied codecs can be carried in that container. Check paths, permissions, and stream mapping.
- The playlist fails at a file boundary: Compare stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Verify durations and timestamps; the concat demuxer’s duration-based timestamp adjustment can produce artifacts when duration information is wrong.
- Audio drops out or starts late: Compare audio stream presence and duration in every file, and inspect a test stream at each transition. Unequal stream lengths can cause gaps.
- Playback stutters or YouTube reports poor connection: Check sustained upload capacity, network stability, and the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the source bitrate only by preparing a different encode; copy mode cannot lower it.
- The live feed does not start: Recheck that the current stream URL and key belong to the selected YouTube broadcast, and that the stream is configured to accept the encoder. Never share the key while troubleshooting.
- The repeated video is not seamless: A loop restarts the file; it does not create a seamless edit. Test the end-to-start transition and prepare an edited or re-encoded file if the source has a visible or audible discontinuity.
