To move, resize, maximize, or restore a Puppeteer browser window, get its ID with page.windowId() and call browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, bounds). Use page.setViewport() instead when you only need to change the page’s viewport; it does not set the outer browser-window rectangle.
Choose the API for the rectangle you need
| Goal | API | What it changes | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move, resize, maximize, or restore the browser window | browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, bounds) |
Outer browser-window position, dimensions, and state | Requires a window ID; inspect the result with browser.getWindowBounds(). |
| Set the browser window’s content area to a requested size | page.resize({contentWidth, contentHeight}) |
Content area, excluding browser UI | Documented as experimental; the page’s resize event may arrive asynchronously. |
| Change page viewport or device metrics | page.setViewport() |
Page viewport | Some changes to isMobile or hasTouch can cause a reload. |
| Apply a device’s user agent and viewport | page.emulate(device) |
Device emulation settings | Apply it before navigation when possible. |
For browser-window position, outer size, or state, use Browser.setWindowBounds. For the web page’s visible layout area, choose viewport sizing or content-area sizing instead. See Puppeteer’s window-management guide, setWindowBounds API reference, setViewport API reference, Page.resize API reference, and emulate API reference.
Set the browser window position and size
The following workflow follows Puppeteer’s documented window-management example. It uses puppeteer-core, launches Chrome with a screen size, opens a separate window, retrieves its ID, then sets and reads its bounds. The documented API signature is setWindowBounds(windowId, windowBounds) and returns a promise.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer-core';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath: '/path/to/chrome',
headless: false,
args: ['--screen-info={800x600}'],
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ type: 'window' });
const windowId = await page.windowId();
await browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, {
left: 20,
top: 20,
width: 780,
height: 580,
});
const bounds = await browser.getWindowBounds(windowId);
console.log(bounds);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace /path/to/chrome with the Chrome executable path for your machine. The documented workflow uses puppeteer-core because it connects to an installed browser executable; use the browser launch setup appropriate to your project. Consult the official guide for the complete context.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Bounds and window state
The bounds object can specify coordinates and dimensions, or a window state. To maximize and then restore the window, call:
await browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, { windowState: 'maximized' });
console.log(await browser.getWindowBounds(windowId));
await browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, { windowState: 'normal' });
console.log(await browser.getWindowBounds(windowId));
getWindowBounds(windowId) is the paired read method. Check its result when your next step depends on the actual reported dimensions or state rather than assuming the requested bounds were applied.

Size the content area instead of the outer window
If your requirement is a specific page content-area width and height, Puppeteer documents page.resize({contentWidth, contentHeight}). This method is experimental. The guide sets the viewport to null first so the default viewport does not constrain the window, and starts listening for the resize event before awaiting the resize operation:
await page.setViewport(null);
const resized = page.evaluate(() => new Promise(resolve => {
window.addEventListener('resize', () => resolve({
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
outerWidth: window.outerWidth,
outerHeight: window.outerHeight,
}), { once: true });
}));
await page.resize({ contentWidth: 600, contentHeight: 400 });
console.log(await resized);
Waiting for the event matters because the inner window dimensions are reported asynchronously. The official guide’s sample reports an inner size of 600×400 and outer size of 600×487, but those are example results, not a universal browser-UI offset. See Page.resize for its current documentation and experimental status.

Set only the page viewport
For responsive-layout checks or a fixed page viewport, use page.setViewport(). Set it before navigation when possible, so the page loads at the intended size:
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1080, height: 1024 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
This configures the viewport, not the outer browser window. In Puppeteer’s connection options, defaultViewport currently defaults to {width: 800, height: 600}; setting defaultViewport: null removes that default viewport configuration. Verify the behavior against the Puppeteer version used by your project: ConnectOptions reference and Getting Started guide.

Common problems and fixes
- The browser window did not change when using
page.setViewport(). That method targets the page viewport. Usebrowser.setWindowBounds()for outer window position, size, or state. setWindowBoundscannot run because you do not have a window ID. Obtain it from a page withconst windowId = await page.windowId(), then pass that ID to both bounds methods.- The page reports its old size immediately after
page.resize(). The resize event can arrive asynchronously. Begin waiting for the event before awaiting the resize call, as in the content-area example. - A viewport or device change reloads the page. Puppeteer notes that some changes to
isMobileorhasTouchcan trigger a reload. Apply viewport or device emulation before navigation when practical. - The dimensions differ from the values in a guide example. Browser UI, screen configuration, and window state affect reported outer dimensions. Read the bounds with
getWindowBounds(); do not treat sample frame offsets as constants. - An API or option is missing in your installed version. Puppeteer documentation versions vary. Check the API reference for the version installed in your project before relying on a method, especially experimental
Page.resize.

If your goal is to get a page image or PDF rather than control a local Chrome window, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API: one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer have a method to read window bounds?
Yes. Call browser.getWindowBounds(windowId) with the same window ID used for setting bounds.
Can I use page.setViewport() to maximize Chrome?
No. It configures the page viewport; use browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, {windowState: 'maximized'}) to maximize the browser window.
