In browser automation it usually means either reconstructing a run from DOM and event data or playing back a recording of the browser’s rendered frames. Use DOM/event replay when you need structured interactions and diagnostics; use rendered video when visual fidelity is the priority. Live viewing is a separate capability from streaming a completed recording.
This guide shows how to choose a representation, watch Playwright or Puppeteer runs, expose replay data through an API, embed completed playback in a QA or operations product, and protect credentials and user data.
What “session replay streaming” means
A browser automation replay has two parts: capture what the automated browser does, then deliver an inspectable view to a developer, operator, support agent, or end user. A live view helps you intervene while a run is in progress. A completed replay lets someone investigate a failure or attach evidence to a ticket without rerunning the browser.
Do not treat “streaming” as a synonym for “live.” Browserbase’s Session Replay API streams completed recordings as HLS when requested, while Browserless documents interactive live viewing through a LiveURL as a separate feature. Browserbase’s API announcement describes embedding completed playback in QA, support, and operations products.

Choose the capture representation first
DOM and event replay
Browserless documents an RRWeb-based format that records DOM mutations, mouse movement, clicks, scrolling, keyboard input, console output, and network requests. A player reconstructs the page rather than displaying a conventional video file. This representation can expose useful structured events and is often easier to inspect programmatically, but it is not a guarantee that every pixel or graphics surface will reproduce exactly.
For Puppeteer or Playwright, Browserless says to enable replay=true when opening the connection. Recording starts when the connection is made. A CDP session can send Browserless.stopSessionRecording to stop and upload the data; closing the browser also saves the recording. Rendered-frame recording
Browserbase describes a different pipeline in its engineering article: Chrome DevTools Protocol screencast frames are captured as timestamped PNGs, then encoded asynchronously into HLS fMP4 segments using H.264. Each tab is its own stream, tabs share a global timeline, and the article says the design records up to ten tabs simultaneously. These are Browserbase’s architecture statements, not an independent benchmark.
Rendered frames preserve what appeared in the viewport, including canvas and WebGL output, but they do not inherently provide the DOM-level event model that an RRWeb replay contains. Compression, frame cadence, and viewport size also affect what a viewer can examine.
WebM screen recording is a third mode
Browserless separates DOM Session Replay from Screen Recording. Its CDP extensions reference describes WebM capture with server-side recording enabled by record=true and CDP start/stop commands. The reference says recording is refused after a credential has been filled in the session because the recording could capture the secret. That restriction applies to Browserless’s screen-recording mode, not to every replay system.
How do I stream a browser session replay?
Use this sequence regardless of provider. Exact parameter names and authentication differ, so follow the selected provider’s current documentation.

- Define the viewing goal. Decide whether the consumer needs a live interactive handoff, a completed investigation, structured events, or a visual recording.
- Start capture before the important work. For Browserless DOM replay, connect with
replay=true. For Browserless WebM, userecord=trueand the documented CDP commands. In a rendered-frame system, create the provider session and enable its recording option before navigation. - Record a stable viewport and metadata. Store the session ID, tab ID, browser version, viewport, test name, commit or build identifier, and start time beside the replay reference.
- Run the automation. Keep navigation and application logs correlated with the replay timestamp. If the workflow opens additional tabs, verify that the chosen service captures them and explains how their timelines are related.
- Stop and finalize deliberately. Send the provider’s stop command when the run ends, then wait for an upload or encoding-complete status before publishing a replay link.
- Deliver to the viewer. A live viewer normally receives an interactive URL. A completed recording may be exposed as a dashboard item, a downloadable file, or an HLS playlist. Your backend should authorize the request and issue only the short-lived playback URL or token the client needs.
How can I watch a Playwright session live?
A live session and a replay are different products. A live view must carry current browser state and, when permitted, user interaction; a completed replay can be optimized for later playback. Browserless documents LiveURL for interactive viewing, while its uploaded Session Replay is intended for later dashboard playback. Do not assume that an HLS replay URL can control the live browser.
Playwright with Browserless DOM replay
Configure the Browserless connection using the documented replay=true option, run the Playwright test, and retain the session identifier. When the test finishes, call Browserless.stopSessionRecording through a CDP session or close the browser so Browserless saves the recording. The provider’s documentation should be treated as authoritative for the current endpoint, token, and code syntax.
Live handoff design
Keep the live viewer behind your own authenticated route. Return a provider LiveURL only to an authorized operator, expire it when the incident ends, and log who opened it. If an operator can click or type, make that permission explicit; a read-only live monitor is safer for routine CI.
How do I replay a browser automation run after it finishes?
DOM/event workflow
Save the replay artifact and its metadata when the provider confirms upload. Present a timeline that can jump to console errors, failed assertions, network failures, and user actions. Because the page is reconstructed, include a fallback link to raw logs and a screenshot or video for graphics-heavy failures.
HLS rendered-frame workflow
Browserbase’s API announcement says its Session Replay API lists tabs in a session and returns an HLS playlist for a selected recorded tab. Your backend can request the playlist, check authorization, and pass the resulting URL to an HLS-capable web player. Each tab must be selected explicitly; do not silently show the wrong tab in a multi-tab incident.
Browserbase says its recordings are stored for 31 days in the May 14, 2026 announcement. Treat that as a dated vendor statement and verify the current retention terms before designing long-term evidence storage.

Can I embed browser session recordings in my QA dashboard?
Yes, if the provider exposes a playback URL or playlist and permits your product’s use case. A practical architecture is:
- Your worker creates the browser session and records the run.
- Your backend stores only a provider recording ID, tab ID, test metadata, and an internal access-control decision.
- When a QA user opens a result, your backend checks project membership and asks the provider for the current replay URL or HLS playlist.
- Your frontend loads the playlist in an HLS player or the provider’s replay component. Never place a permanent provider token in page source.
- On expiration, the frontend requests a new authorized URL rather than exposing a reusable credential.
For Browserbase, the API’s tab-listing and playlist response are designed for this backend-mediated pattern. The engineering article also describes short-lived signed tokens for segment URLs. Confirm the current API authentication and token lifetime in the provider documentation before implementation.
Browserbase and Browserless: which approach fits?

Neither provider’s description is an independent benchmark. Evaluate your own pages, especially payment forms, cross-origin frames, canvas applications, and workflows that open several tabs.
Privacy, secrets, and access control
- Mask before capture where possible. Replace production identifiers with test data and disable fields that do not need to appear.
- Understand input handling. Browserless documents masking while an interactive LiveURL viewer is connected and continued masking after Browserless fills a stored credential for that browser session. Scope that behavior to Browserless and verify it for your exact mode.
- Separate credentials from replay access. A replay viewer should not inherit an automation token, cookie, or Authorization header.
- Set retention intentionally. Keep only the period required for QA or support, and copy an approved artifact to controlled storage if longer retention is necessary.
- Authorize every playback request. Use project- and run-level permissions, short-lived signed URLs, and audit logs for viewers and downloads.
- Check third-party content. Cross-origin iframes, analytics, chat widgets, and external images can contain personal data or fail to replay consistently.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Capture overhead
DOM/event capture grows with mutation and interaction volume; Browserless warns that very long, high-activity sessions can produce large replay files. Rendered-frame capture shifts work to frame storage and encoding. Use shorter test cases, mark meaningful checkpoints, and avoid recording idle periods when the provider supports selective capture.
Encoding latency
Browserbase describes eager encoding for approximately the first 30 seconds followed by just-in-time encoding in its engineering article. That is a vendor-reported design detail, not a guarantee that every replay is immediately playable. Your UI should show “processing” and retry playlist requests with bounded backoff.
Failure handling
Record the automation result independently of the replay result. A test can pass while recording fails, or a replay can exist while the browser assertion fails. Store both statuses, and expose logs when no playable artifact is available.

Plan and retention checks
Plan requirements, quotas, retention, and limits change. Browserless explicitly places Session Replay on a paid plan; Browserbase’s 31-day figure is dated May 14, 2026. Confirm current terms before estimating storage or promising customers a retention period.

The replay is empty or missing the first actions
Capture probably started after navigation or after the key interaction. Enable replay before connecting or creating the page, and verify the provider reports recording started.

The session may still be uploading or the browser may have disconnected before finalization. Wait for the provider’s completion state, retry status polling, and preserve the session ID for support.
An HLS player reports a manifest or CORS error
Fetch the playlist through your authorized backend, ensure the signed URL has not expired, and verify that segment requests are allowed by the provider’s CORS policy. Do not substitute a permanent secret in browser JavaScript.
A DOM replay does not match the page
Check cross-origin iframes, canvas or WebGL content, dynamic data, and missing external assets. Browserless lists these as fidelity limitations. Attach network and console logs so a viewer can distinguish a replay artifact from an application defect.
Screen recording is refused
In Browserless, the CDP reference says server-side recording is refused after a credential has been filled. Start recording before credential entry or use the provider’s documented masking-safe mode; never weaken secret handling merely to obtain video.

Several tabs appear out of order
Use the provider’s tab identifiers and shared timeline metadata. Browserbase describes one stream per tab on a global timeline; request and render the selected tab explicitly.
