Yes—a compact PC such as the HP ProDesk 400 G3 Mini can run Plex Media Server, and ServeTheHome’s 2020 walkthrough is a useful example of how to divide the operating system, Plex data, and media across separate drives. Its Windows 10 and registry steps are historical, however. For a current setup, follow Plex’s present Transcoder setting path and check the exact hardware and Plex Pass requirements before relying on hardware transcoding.
What the TinyMiniMicro build did
Nick Fusco’s ServeTheHome guide, published September 19, 2020, built a Plex server around an HP ProDesk 400 G3 with an Intel Core i5-7500T and 8 GB of RAM. The design separates three storage jobs: the Windows installation, Plex’s data and temporary transcoding files, and the movie and TV library.
| Role | Drive in the 2020 example | How it was used |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 120 GB 2.5-inch SATA SSD | Windows 10 Pro |
| Plex application data and temporary transcodes | 250 GB M.2 NVMe SSD | Plex files, metadata, and temporary transcoding |
| Media library | 2 TB USB hard drive | Movie and TV files |
These capacities and components describe Fusco’s specific build, not a minimum requirement. He reported that the ProDesk came with a Windows 10 Pro license and updated it to Windows 10 Pro version 2004. That operating system version is part of the dated example, not a current recommendation.
Why separate Plex data from media?
The arrangement keeps the frequently accessed Plex database and temporary transcode files on a faster internal drive while placing large media files on a separate volume. It also makes the storage roles easier to understand when setting up libraries or replacing a disk. Adapt the drive letters and folder locations to your own system; the original directory names were PlexMediaServer, PlexMetaData, and Temp on the faster volume, with Movies and TV Shows on the media volume.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Drive separation is a design choice, not a Plex requirement. Make sure Plex can access the folders after a restart and that the media drive remains connected and mounted at the same path. A removable USB disk that disconnects or receives a different drive letter can make library items appear unavailable.
How to adapt the setup for current Plex
The 2020 walkthrough covers Windows Disk Management, Plex installation, server setup, libraries, and transcoder options. Preserve that general sequence, but do not copy its registry edit or assume its older Plex interface matches the current one. Plex’s current documented hardware-acceleration control is in the Plex Web App at Settings > Server > Transcoder.

- Prepare storage. In Windows Disk Management, format the drives and assign volumes. Create folders for the media library and, if you want to keep Plex data or temporary transcodes on a separate drive, create those folders as well. Choose paths that remain stable.
- Install Plex Media Server. Download the installer from Plex’s Media Server downloads page. The original guide changed the installation location to its faster drive; current install and data-location options can differ by software version, so consult Plex’s current instructions rather than treating the 2020 procedure as authoritative.
- Set up the server and libraries. Open the local Plex Web App, name the server, and add Movies and TV libraries that point to the corresponding folders on your media volume. Decide whether to enable remote access based on whether you need to reach the server from outside your home network.
- Set hardware acceleration, if eligible. In Plex Web App, open Settings > Server > Transcoder, turn on Use hardware acceleration when available, then save. Plex says a restart is not required after saving. Hardware-accelerated streaming generally requires an active Plex Pass.
- Choose library maintenance options. Set automatic library scans and optional analysis or thumbnail tasks according to how often you add media and how much background work you want the server to perform.
The original article redirected Plex metadata by changing a Windows registry value named LocalAppDataPath. Treat that as a historical, version-specific method: verify Plex’s current documentation and the procedure applicable to your installed version before changing the registry. The current hardware-acceleration settings path above is the documented setting to use for that feature.
What Quick Sync does—and what it does not guarantee
Intel Quick Sync is video encoding and decoding capability in supported Intel integrated graphics. Plex may need to transcode when a client cannot directly play a file’s format or quality, or when playback conditions call for a lower-quality stream. Hardware acceleration can reduce CPU load and help with playback, but the outcome depends on the processor and platform, server software, source media, client, and stream conditions.

Plex’s hardware-accelerated streaming guidance says Intel Quick Sync generally requires a second-generation Intel Core processor or newer and recommends fifth-generation Broadwell or newer for a better experience. Plex identifies seventh-generation Core i3, i5, and i7 processors for HEVC encoding. The example i5-7500T is a seventh-generation Kaby Lake processor, but buyers should verify the exact processor in any used or refurbished PC rather than relying on a product-family label.
- Hardware-encoded output can look less sharp in some circumstances than software-encoded output.
- HEVC encoding uses more resources and may support fewer simultaneous streams than H.264.
- Hardware acceleration is not a promise of a fixed number of simultaneous 4K transcodes. Codec, subtitles, client capabilities, and other workload details matter.
What performance should you expect?
Fusco reported that the HP ProDesk 400 G3 served 1080p media to a family of five with ease, regardless of codec. That is the author’s account of his 2020 example, not an independently verified benchmark or a guarantee for another library, client mix, or number of simultaneous transcodes.

Plex’s rough CPU examples provide context, not a sizing guarantee:
| Workload example in Plex guidance | Example CPU |
|---|---|
| No transcoding | Intel Atom 1.2 GHz |
| One 720p transcode | Intel Core i3 3.0 GHz |
| One 1080p transcode | Intel Core i5 3.0 GHz |
| One 4K transcode | Intel Core i7 3.2 GHz |
Plex emphasizes that actual needs vary and that simultaneous transcodes increase demand. These examples do not account for every processor generation, codec, subtitle path, or hardware-acceleration capability. If clients can Direct Play your files, the server may avoid much of the transcoding work; if they cannot, the required workload can rise quickly.

How to choose a compact PC for Plex
For the question “What mini PC do I need for Plex transcoding?”, start with the library and clients rather than the chassis size or a broad CPU label. Check these factors before buying or repurposing a system:
- Direct Play versus transcoding: Identify whether your devices can play the library’s formats and quality directly, including any subtitle formats that may trigger transcoding.
- Processor and Quick Sync support: Confirm the exact CPU generation and supported codecs. Plex’s requirements and codec notes are more useful than assuming all Intel graphics behave alike.
- Simultaneous streams: Estimate how many people may watch at once and whether their streams are likely to Direct Play, use hardware transcoding, or require software transcoding.
- Storage and expansion: Ensure the system has suitable internal storage for the operating system and Plex data, and plan enough capacity for media. The example uses a USB hard drive, but the guide does not identify a particular drive model or confirm current product availability.
- Operating system and drivers: Check compatibility and driver support for the system you intend to use. The source guide’s Windows 10 version is dated and should not be treated as a present-day setup prescription.
- Placement, noise, and power: Consider where the server will sit and whether its noise and power use suit that location. The 2020 guide makes a qualitative low-power claim but reports no measured wattage, so it does not support a numeric estimate.
What remains useful from the 2020 guide
The strongest lesson is its storage architecture: keep the library distinct from the server’s application data and temporary transcoding workspace when your hardware and budget make that practical. The HP ProDesk 400 G3 is a concrete historical example of a compact Plex host with Quick Sync; the specific Windows 10 build, registry adjustment, and interface steps need current-version verification before reuse.
