Server-side and client-side anti-cheat address different parts of the problem. A server can validate game actions and analyze what happens in matches; software on a player’s device can inspect local files, memory, processes, or system state. Competitive games often combine both, because neither view catches every kind of cheating.

What server-side and client-side anti-cheat mean

Server-side: validate actions and analyze play

Server-side anti-cheat includes two related but distinct approaches. In an authoritative game, the server owns consequential game state and validates a client’s requests instead of accepting the client’s account of what happened. Riot describes VALORANT’s server as authoritative over movement, correcting a client when its prediction differs (Riot Games: “Peeking into VALORANT’s Netcode”).

Server-side behavioral detection is different: it looks for suspicious patterns in in-game performance data. It may identify a player or match as suspicious without identifying the exact cheat involved. Riot describes this approach in its 2026 anti-cheat article.

Client-side: inspect the player’s device

Client-side anti-cheat runs on, or examines, the player’s machine. Depending on the product, it can check game files, memory, running processes, or operating-system state for signs of tampering. The exact access and functions vary by product. Riot describes Vanguard as a user-mode client, a kernel-mode driver, and a platform: in Riot’s account, the client handles detections while a game runs, and the driver validates memory and system state and runs at startup (Riot Games: “A Message About Vanguard from Our Security & Privacy Teams”).

How the two approaches compare

Dimension Server-side Client-side
What it can observe Client inputs, the server’s simulation, game outcomes, and patterns visible in server-side data. Behavioral systems can flag suspicious performance without naming a specific cheat (Riot’s 2026 anti-cheat article). Local game and system state that a server generally cannot inspect directly. What it can see depends on the product’s design and permissions; Riot says Vanguard’s driver validates memory and system state (Riot’s Vanguard explanation).
What it can do Reject actions or outcomes that violate authoritative game rules, and flag suspicious patterns for review or enforcement (Riot’s VALORANT netcode article and 2026 anti-cheat article). Detect or impede unauthorized software and local tampering. The functions described by Riot and Activision apply to their own products, not every client-side system (Riot’s Vanguard explanation; Activision’s RICOCHET update).
Trust boundary Treat client data as a request or prediction, then validate consequential state on the server. Riot says VALORANT’s communication is designed around the principle that a server must not trust a client’s view of the world (Riot Games). The detector runs on a device controlled by the player. Developers may use integrity checks or higher-privilege components to defend against cheats with greater system access; Riot says user-mode capability can be compromised by higher-privilege cheats (Riot Games).
Responsiveness Waiting for server confirmation can add delay. Games can use client prediction and later correction or rollback so play feels responsive while the server remains authoritative (Riot’s VALORANT article; Roblox’s Server Authority article). Local checks need not wait for a server round trip, but more extensive or elevated access raises security, privacy, and compatibility questions (Riot’s Vanguard explanation).
Main limitations A server cannot directly see every local tool or manipulation, and suspicious behavior is not always conclusive. Riot says its behavioral approach uses in-game performance data and may not classify an infected match as a particular cheat (Riot Games). Client defenses operate in an environment controlled by the potential adversary, so they can be bypassed and may create trust or compatibility concerns. Vendor descriptions explain claimed architecture, not independent proof of effectiveness.

Does server-side anti-cheat reduce lag?

Not automatically. If a game waits for a server response before displaying every action, input can feel delayed. A common compromise is client-side prediction: the game shows a locally estimated result immediately, while the server checks the action and remains the authority. If the client and server disagree, the game corrects or rolls back the predicted state.

Riot describes prediction and correction for VALORANT, while Roblox describes server authority paired with client prediction and rollback. Roblox summarizes its model this way: “Server Authority makes the server the source of truth for game logic and simulation so that no single client can change the outcome for other players until it’s validated” (Roblox). This is a networking design trade-off, not evidence that all server-side anti-cheat has the same latency impact.

Why games combine the layers

Each layer covers a different blind spot. Server authority can make certain invalid outcomes impossible to authorize. Client defenses can inspect local tampering that may not be apparent in match results. Behavioral analysis can identify suspicious performance across server-observed play. Detection and deterrence are not the same as preventing every cheat from being attempted.

RICOCHET Anti-Cheat illustrates a layered deployment: Activision describes server-side tools, client and server detections, analytics, and a kernel-level driver for PC (Activision’s RICOCHET update). This is Activision’s description of its system, not an independent comparative measurement.

Why kernel-level anti-cheat raises extra questions

A kernel-mode driver has more system privilege than ordinary user-mode software. That access may help a product inspect or defend against threats that operate with elevated privileges, but it also makes security, privacy, and compatibility important considerations. Riot acknowledges concerns about kernel access and describes Vanguard’s role and data practices from the company’s perspective (Riot’s security and privacy explanation). Those statements should be understood as the vendor’s account, not independent proof of safety or a description of every anti-cheat driver.

Examples from games and platforms

  • VALORANT: Riot describes server-authoritative movement alongside client prediction and server correction (Riot Games).
  • League of Legends: Riot describes authoritative server simulation, protection techniques on the client, and limiting unnecessary disclosure of other players’ state. Riot’s technical article says the design helps prevent common cheats such as “god mode” and “disconnect hacks,” “barring any overlooked exploits” (Riot Games).
  • RICOCHET Anti-Cheat: Activision describes a combination of server tools, analytics, detections, and a kernel-level PC driver. The games and planned features named on its page can change over time; consult Activision’s current update for the latest rollout details (Activision).
  • Roblox Server Authority: Roblox describes server-owned game logic with client prediction and rollback to combine validation with responsiveness (Roblox).

What the comparison can—and cannot—establish

These architectural differences explain what each approach is designed to observe and enforce; they do not establish which product catches more cheats or produces fewer false positives. The cited vendor and platform descriptions do not provide a controlled, head-to-head benchmark of detection accuracy, false positives, system overhead, or privacy impact across anti-cheat products. No single approach is therefore a universal winner: the useful question is which threats a system addresses and what trade-offs its implementation imposes.
