Quantum computers are real, but today’s machines are still error-prone research systems—not faster replacements for ordinary computers. Their most promising long-term use is simulating molecules, chemicals, and materials, where quantum physics makes some problems difficult for classical computers. For the foreseeable future, quantum machines are expected to work alongside classical systems, not replace them.
What can quantum computers do?
Quantum computers use the rules of quantum physics to process information. That does not make them faster at every task: any advantage is expected to depend on the problem. The clearest long-term research direction is modeling physical systems whose behavior is itself quantum-mechanical.
Simulate molecules, chemicals, and materials
Classical computers can struggle to represent the interactions inside complex quantum systems. A sufficiently capable quantum computer could help researchers model those interactions, with possible applications in materials science and drug development. These are prospective benefits, not established commercial outcomes. NIST’s Quantum Computing Explained describes these areas as a research direction.
Explore other specialized problems
Quantum computing research also examines information-processing and mathematical problems. Whether current noisy, intermediate-scale devices can deliver useful results for such tasks—including simulation—remains unsettled. A demonstration should not be treated as useful quantum advantage without specifying the task, the classical method used for comparison, and the evidence that the quantum approach performed better.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What can today’s machines actually do?
Current quantum computers are rudimentary and error-prone. NIST describes them mainly as tools for exploring physics, chemistry, and mathematical problems, and for learning how more capable systems might be built. Many potential applications may be years or perhaps decades away, and expert views on what near-term devices can accomplish differ. NIST’s explainer does not establish that current machines have produced broad, practical benefits for industry or consumers.
Quantum computing is one part of a wider field of quantum technologies. For example, nanoscale magnetic sensing and long-distance quantum key distribution are research directions in measurement and communication; they are not applications of quantum computers themselves. NIST’s overview of quantum information science covers these broader areas.

Will quantum computers replace classical computers?
No. NIST states that “Quantum computers will not replace our familiar ‘classical’ computers.” Classical machines remain suited to everyday computing, while quantum systems may be useful for particular problems that are difficult for classical methods. The expected model is cooperation: a quantum processor tackles a specialized part of a workload, while classical computers handle the rest.
That hybrid approach is also reflected in IBM’s roadmap, which describes quantum computers working with high-performance computing. IBM’s March 2026 roadmap says the company aims for first examples of quantum advantage using a quantum computer with high-performance computing in 2026. That is IBM’s target, not a verified outcome or proof of general-purpose quantum advantage. IBM says its roadmap represents current intent and may change or be withdrawn. IBM’s Quantum 2026 roadmap states: “All information being released represents IBM’s current intent, is subject to change or withdrawal, and represents only goals and objectives.”

Are quantum computers going to break encryption?
A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could use Shor’s algorithm to attack some widely used public-key cryptography. But the machines available today are far from the reliable scale required. NIST estimates that running Shor’s algorithm for code-breaking would require millions of reliably operating qubits; this is a scale estimate, not a measured capability of an existing device. NIST says such a machine is much further away than today’s error-prone systems. NIST’s explainer discusses that gap.
The risk is therefore important for long-term security planning, but it is not evidence that current quantum computers can break encryption at scale.

Where will quantum computers be used?
These systems are complex machines, and NIST says many experts expect them to be housed in commercial computing centers, national laboratories, and universities rather than on desks or in pockets. Access is more likely to come through specialist institutions or computing services than through a consumer computer purchase. Their practical value will depend on whether future machines can solve particular problems reliably and outperform the best relevant classical approach.
