Glitched Pixel’s September 23, 2026 design article describes Sentinel’s ingest path as a way to preserve incoming observations, record state-changing control events separately, and keep measurements interpretable across descriptor changes. Its key choices are a message-sourced ingested_at timestamp, versioned point descriptors, and storage of both native and canonical values. The article is an architectural description, not an independently audited production report.
How Sentinel separates observations from control events
The design uses two linked activity records. The observation log stores incoming measurements; a separate control-event log records actions that change system state. The observation store is organized as one hypertable per retention class, grouping data according to its assigned retention category.
Glitched Pixel describes a thirteen-stage path from the message bus to the database. The available article detail does not identify every stage or specify all ordering rules, so the count alone is not enough to reconstruct the pipeline. Its four thousand points figure is an approximate design-scale example, not a reported capacity test or performance benchmark.

Where ingested_at comes from—and why
In the described design, ingested_at is taken from the JetStream message timestamp, rather than assigned from processing-time now(). Glitched Pixel’s rationale is tied to its storage layout: because Timescale requires a partitioning column in every unique index, the deduplication key includes ingested_at, the driver instance, the source epoch, and the source sequence.

If processing time supplied ingested_at, a message redelivered after a crash could receive a different timestamp and fail to match the intended uniqueness key. The article’s design instead relies on the bus timestamp remaining stable across redelivery. That is the source’s stated mechanism and assumption, not a universal guarantee for every stream configuration.
The rationale also assumes one observation stream assigns timestamps in stream order. If observations come from multiple streams, the monotonicity property is weaker and the design decision needs to be reconsidered.

How the registry preserves historical meaning
Sentinel’s registry is loaded from Git into PostgreSQL, with each load creating a registry version. Canonicalized descriptor content is identified by a content hash; a point descriptor associates a registry version and point identifier with the relevant descriptor hash.

An observation can be interpreted using the descriptor set associated with it, or another available version, rather than relying only on whatever descriptor happens to be current. This depends on the relevant version and descriptor content remaining available.

Why observations keep native and canonical values
The schema retains the device-native value and unit alongside a converted canonical value. For example, a device might report 71.6 Fahrenheit while the canonical column stores 22.0 Celsius. This is an illustrative example in the article, not a reported test result.
Keeping the original representation makes conversion reversible in an important operational sense: if a descriptor’s scale factor is later found to be wrong, the canonical value can be recalculated from the native reading using a corrected registry version. Without the native value, correcting the conversion could require information that was discarded during ingestion.

What reprocessing does—and does not do
Glitched Pixel says reprocessing rebuilds current state for affected points and refreshes aggregates. It is bounded by the data and downstream behavior described in the design; it is not a full rewind of every consequence of earlier values.

- If a requested operation cannot reach all of its intended data, the design refuses it rather than applying only a partial reprocessing.
- Rules that fired on the old values are not rerun.
These limits matter when a corrected descriptor changes historical canonical values: refreshed state and aggregates do not imply that previously triggered rules are evaluated again.
What this article leaves outside its scope
The Sentinel design article assigns several operational questions to companion documents rather than establishing their answers here:
- Retention policy and compaction details.
- Bounded cold-start rehydration.
- Core runtime capacity and outage or backlog behavior.
- Principal definitions and the security model.
Accordingly, the thirteen-stage description and four thousand points example should not be treated as proof of production throughput, outage tolerance, or retention guarantees. They are figures in Glitched Pixel’s 2026 architecture article.
