To send a large file without a messaging app, open it on your Android device, tap Share > Quick Share, choose the nearby recipient, and have them accept the transfer. Quick Share sends directly between supported devices; Google publishes no fixed maximum file size, but the amount you can send depends on the sharing method and devices involved. See Google’s Quick Share file-size and Android sharing guidance.

Which Quick Share route should you use?

Route What you need Connection and proximity guidance
Android to Android Supported Android devices; Quick Share is built into supported devices. Bluetooth is used to find nearby devices, and transfer uses a local Wi-Fi connection. Google says devices typically need to be within about 30 cm (1 foot) for this route.
Android to Windows A compatible Windows PC with the appropriate Quick Share app, plus Android 6.0 or later. Google’s Windows guidance calls for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the same network, and a distance of no more than 5 meters (16 feet).

These distances and network instructions are route-specific, not a universal Quick Share radius. For Samsung PCs, Google directs users to Samsung’s Quick Share app rather than Google’s Windows app. See Google’s Android-to-Windows requirements and the Android Quick Share FAQ.

How do you send a large file from Android to Android?

  1. On the sending phone, open the file or content you want to share.
  2. Tap the Android Share control, then tap Quick Share.
  3. Choose the intended device from the nearby-device list.
  4. On the receiving device, review the request and tap to accept. The transfer starts after acceptance.

The receiver needs to be discoverable: they can use Receive mode or a visibility setting that permits discovery. Keep the devices close together; Google’s Android-to-Android instructions say they typically need to be within about 30 cm (1 foot). On selected Android 13 and later devices, Google also documents sharing copied content from the clipboard, but that option is not available on every device. Details are in Google’s Android Quick Share instructions.

How do you send a large file from Android to a Windows PC?

Check that the PC and phone are compatible

Google’s Android Help specifies a 64-bit PC running Windows 10 or later and a phone running Android 6.0 or later. ARM-based PCs require Windows 11 or later. The PC needs Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and should be connected to the same network as the Android device. Keep the devices within 5 meters (16 feet). Google’s support page lists regional availability restrictions, so check its current requirements if the app is unavailable where you are. Samsung PC owners should install Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store. See Google’s current compatibility and setup guidance.

Install and receive with Quick Share

  1. On a non-Samsung PC, install and open Google Quick Share for Windows. On a Samsung PC, use Samsung’s Quick Share app.
  2. In the PC app, choose a visibility setting that allows the phone to find it.
  3. On Android, open the file and tap Share > Quick Share.
  4. Choose the PC when it appears. Accept the transfer on the receiving device if prompted, then let it finish.

For the reverse direction, open Quick Share for Windows, select or drag a file or folder into the app, choose the visible Android device, and send. The Android recipient accepts the request before the transfer begins. Windows setup and sending steps are documented in Google’s Quick Share for Windows instructions.

Does Quick Share have a file-size limit?

Google’s Android FAQ says there is no fixed maximum file size: the amount that can be sent depends on the sharing method and the devices. Google says nearby sharing works best for large files; internet-based sharing may have practical limits. That is not a guarantee that every device can send a file of any size. Google’s feature overview also notes that app limitations may apply. The sources do not provide a universal gigabyte limit, transfer-speed benchmark, or guaranteed completion time. See the Google Android FAQ and Google’s Quick Share feature overview.

Who can see your device, and is Quick Share safe?

Visibility controls determine who can discover a receiving device. Android offers Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone for 10 minutes; after that temporary setting, visibility returns to the prior selection. Windows offers Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one. Use the narrowest option that works for the transfer, and check the current setting after using temporary public visibility. Google explains Android visibility in Use Quick Share and Windows options in its Windows sharing guide.

Google says Quick Share transfers are encrypted, and a recipient is asked to accept or decline files from other users. Encryption and the acceptance prompt do not prove that a file is safe to open. Accept files you expect and trust the sender.

Why can’t the receiving device see my phone or PC?

  • The recipient is missing from the list: Make sure the receiving device is in Receive mode or has a visibility setting that permits discovery. Check that it is nearby and, on Android, that the screen is unlocked where applicable.
  • Discovery or connection fails: Turn on Bluetooth on both devices. For Android-to-Windows, confirm the PC has Wi-Fi or Ethernet, both devices are on the same network, and they are within 5 meters (16 feet).
  • The Windows app will not work: Check the PC’s Windows version and architecture, use Samsung’s app on Samsung PCs, and do not run Google’s Windows app as administrator. Google notes discovery can fail on some networks if Windows lacks Bluetooth Low Energy Extended Advertising.
  • No transfer notification appears on Windows: Check Windows and Quick Share notification settings, and turn off Focus Assist or Do Not Disturb if either is suppressing alerts.
  • A device appears unsupported: Google advises checking Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location, and proximity. On Samsung devices, check that Samsung’s Quick Share app is up to date. Galaxy settings and features may differ on devices running Android 10 with One UI 2.1 or later.
  • Everyone visibility may still be active: After using Android’s Everyone for 10 minutes setting, check that the device returned to its previous visibility choice.
