Self-hosted video can use substantial bandwidth because, in common unicast delivery, each viewer receives a separate stream. Total delivery grows with the number of viewers, how long they watch, and the bitrate of the rendition they receive. To reduce traffic, measure actual delivery first, then consider adaptive bitrate streaming, a sensible rendition ladder, caching for repeat views, or a managed video platform.
Bandwidth is data transferred over the network; it is distinct from the compute used to encode video and the storage used to retain it. Identify whether your problem is a saturated network link, an egress or transfer charge, or both before choosing a fix.
Why self-hosted video uses bandwidth
In unicast delivery, each viewer gets their own delivery stream. Microsoft Learn notes that this can consume significant bandwidth for large audiences and popular videos. As a result, audience size and watch time matter alongside the playback bitrate.
A useful planning relationship is: delivered data is approximately the sum of playback bitrate multiplied by playback duration across viewers, plus protocol and request overhead. This is an estimate, not a guarantee of monthly usage. Actual average and peak rates vary, and a peak bitrate alone does not tell you how much data will be delivered over a month.

Resolution alone does not determine bitrate. The selected rendition, network conditions, viewing device, codec and encoding choices, and visual complexity all affect delivery. Cloudflare notes that a slideshow generally needs less bandwidth than high-motion sports footage at a comparable quality tier.
How to reduce video delivery bandwidth
1. Measure actual delivery
Start with server or CDN egress data, viewer counts, watch time, selected renditions, cache hit rate, and the share of requests served directly by your origin. Check whether usage comes from live or on-demand video and whether a small number of popular videos account for much of the traffic.
Clarify your constraints separately: available upload capacity, an egress allowance or transfer charge, and any request charges are not the same thing. Review how your provider defines and bills each one.

2. Use adaptive bitrate streaming and a sensible rendition ladder
Adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming provides multiple encoded renditions so a compatible player can select a rate suited to available bandwidth. AWS Elemental MediaConvert describes automated ABR as choosing rendition count and resolution based on the input, while avoiding renditions that increase bitrate without improving quality. Cloudflare’s player guidance also discusses choosing an appropriate rendition for viewers on different network conditions.

Avoid forcing the highest quality for every viewer, and remove renditions that add data without a meaningful quality benefit. A fixed-resolution video delivered progressively does not provide the same ability to switch to a lower-rate rendition.
3. Cache repeat delivery when your workload allows it
A CDN or cache can serve repeat video requests from an edge location rather than repeatedly fetching segments from your origin. IETF RFC 9317 describes caching and preloading as ways to reduce traffic crossing peering exchanges. The benefit depends on how often the same content is requested, whether cache rules allow reuse, and where viewers are located.

Private or personalized streams may need authorization-aware cache configuration. Compare origin egress, cache hit rate, geography, and CDN charges; there is no universal savings figure established for every workload.
4. Compare self-management with a managed video platform
A managed service can bundle uploading, encoding, storage, and delivery. For example, Cloudflare documents Stream as providing upload, encoding, storage, adaptive bitrate delivery, and edge distribution. That convenience does not prove it will cost less than self-hosting.

Compare delivery approaches
| Approach | What to assess | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted files | Actual delivered bytes, origin capacity and egress charges; encoding workflow and format support; storage and operational effort. | You need direct control and can manage delivery, encoding, and infrastructure. |
| CDN in front of self-hosted files | Cache hit rate, origin traffic, audience geography, cache rules, and CDN delivery and request charges. | Content is cacheable and repeat requests or distance from the origin are meaningful concerns. |
| Managed video platform | Encoding and rendition controls, storage, delivered viewing, access control, reliability, total cost, and migration requirements. | You want a bundled upload, encoding, storage, and delivery workflow and its terms fit your workload. |
Bandwidth fixes are not encoding fixes
Transcoding uses compute resources; delivering video to viewers uses network transfer. Faster encoding hardware may shorten processing time, but it does not by itself reduce viewer egress. Lowering delivery bitrate or serving cacheable content closer to viewers is more directly tied to traffic volume.

Why is my self-hosted video using so much bandwidth?
In common unicast delivery, each viewer receives a separate stream. More viewers, longer watch times, and higher playback bitrates generally mean more delivered data. Measure actual egress and viewing patterns to find the main cause.
How do I reduce video streaming bandwidth?
Measure delivery first. Then test an adaptive bitrate ladder that avoids unnecessary high-rate renditions, and consider caching repeat requests where the content and access rules allow it.

Does a CDN reduce bandwidth costs for self-hosted video?
A CDN can reduce repeated traffic from your origin by serving cacheable content at edge locations. Whether it reduces your total cost depends on cacheability, demand, geography, and the provider’s charges.
Should I use adaptive bitrate streaming?
ABR can let a compatible player switch among renditions as available bandwidth changes. It can help avoid sending the highest-rate version to every viewer, but the rendition ladder needs testing to balance quality and bitrate.
Will a managed video platform automatically be cheaper?
No. A managed platform may bundle encoding, storage, and delivery, but compare its current terms and total cost with your actual viewing, storage, features, and migration requirements.
