Self-hosted cloud storage keeps files on a server you administer and makes them available through web, desktop, or mobile clients. It can give you more control over where data lives, but you also take responsibility for setup, updates, security, backups, and recovery. Nextcloud is one example; its requirements and features illustrate the work involved, but the same details do not apply to every platform.
What self-hosted cloud storage does
A self-hosted service stores account files on a server under your administration. That server might be a home computer, a compatible NAS, or rented infrastructure that you manage. Users access files through a web interface, WebDAV, or desktop and mobile apps. With synchronization enabled, selected files are kept in step across the server and client devices.
Think of the server as the central file store and the clients as ways to access or synchronize its contents. This is convenient, but synchronization is not the same as an independent backup: a deletion or unwanted edit can propagate to other devices.
What running a Nextcloud server requires
Nextcloud is an example of a self-hosted file platform, not a synonym for all self-hosted storage. Its software stack requires an operating system, database, web server, and PHP runtime. The supported choices and versions change, so check the Nextcloud system requirements for the exact server release before choosing hardware or upgrading.

The current requirements documentation lists a minimum of 128 MB of RAM per process and recommends at least 512 MB per process. These are per-process figures, not a total-memory recommendation for a complete server. The documentation says overall memory needs vary with users, apps, files, and activity; the database, caching, background jobs, and concurrent use also affect the deployment.
Hardware choice depends on workload and availability needs. A home computer may be suitable for a small, low-uptime service; a NAS is an option only if it supports the required software stack; rented infrastructure can avoid maintaining physical equipment while leaving system administration in your hands. Compare compatibility, storage expansion, redundancy, power use, network reachability, backup capacity, and the time you can spend maintaining it. There is no universal hardware winner.
How file access and sync work
The Nextcloud User Manual describes web access, WebDAV, desktop and mobile sync, large uploads, external storage, sharing, deleted-file handling, and file versioning. In everyday use, you choose which files or folders to access or synchronize on each device, while the server provides the shared account store.

Sync improves access across devices, but it is not a reliable substitute for retained recovery copies. If a file is deleted or corrupted and that change synchronizes, other connected devices may receive it too. Deleted-file and version-history features can help, but their behavior and retention depend on configuration and release. Decide how long you need recoverable versions to remain available, then use a separate backup method for failures those features cannot address.

Plan backups and test recovery
A backup should cover the components needed to restore the particular deployment—not just the visible files. Depending on how it is configured, that can include user data, the database, configuration, and secrets. Keep at least one copy outside the server’s failure domain: a separate local drive helps with server or disk failure, while an off-site or remote copy can help if the whole site is lost.
Nextcloud’s Backup App documentation describes a particular workflow for creating restore points, packing and moving them to another local or remote location, checking their integrity, and restoring an individual file or a full instance. The app’s first pass places the instance in maintenance mode and needs substantial temporary disk space. This is an app-specific workflow, not a requirement for every Nextcloud backup plan.
The Backup App documentation says recovery of encrypted backup data requires the exported setup and its key. Store required recovery material safely and separately from the server being protected; losing it can prevent recovery. Whatever backup method you choose, periodically restore a file or instance in a controlled way to verify that the backup is usable.
An external hard drive can serve as a separate local backup destination. Choose its capacity based on the data set, retained versions, and expected growth rather than assuming one size fits everyone. A drive kept beside the server does not protect against fire, theft, or other site-wide loss, so consider an additional off-site or remote copy when those risks matter.

Choose security controls for the threat
Encryption options protect different parts of the system and are not interchangeable. Nextcloud’s encryption documentation describes server-side encryption (SSE), end-to-end encryption (E2EE), and disk or block encryption.
Rank #4
- Server-side encryption: The server performs encryption and holds the keys. Nextcloud says SSE is mainly intended for files on external third-party storage. It does not encrypt filenames or directory structure, and it does not protect data from a compromised server or a malicious administrator.
- End-to-end encryption: Clients encrypt protected content before upload. Only clients with the relevant keys can decrypt it, making this the option to consider when server administrators should not be able to read that content.
- Disk or block encryption: This helps protect data if a device or disk is physically stolen or tampered with while it is locked. It does not, by itself, protect files from someone who can access an unlocked, running server.
Transport security is another layer: HTTPS protects the connection between a client and server, but it does not replace storage encryption or endpoint security. Nextcloud notes that HTTPS terminates before server-side encryption is applied, leaving a plaintext interval in server memory. Its documentation also warns that losing encryption keys or the instance secret results in permanent data loss.

Nextcloud’s hardening guidance recommends HTTPS in production, says not to permit unencrypted HTTP, and advises placing the data directory outside the web root. Nextcloud warns that using the service without encrypted HTTPS can expose user data and passwords to interception in a man-in-the-middle attack.
Installation is not the end of the security work. The administrator remains responsible for updates, authentication, public access settings, secrets, and backup operation. Review Nextcloud’s security warnings and configuration guidance, and verify instructions against the documentation for the installed release.
Is self-hosting a good fit?
Self-hosting is most attractive when control over the server and its data matters enough to justify operating it. A hosted cloud service generally shifts much of the infrastructure and maintenance work to a provider; self-hosting keeps more choices in your hands but also makes you accountable for availability and recovery.
Before choosing, weigh who controls the server and encryption keys, whether the clients and sharing features meet your needs, how reliably you can provide remote access, and the full cost of hardware or hosting, storage, electricity, and administrator time. If you cannot maintain the service or test restores, a provider-managed option may be a better fit. The right choice depends on your workload, uptime expectations, network conditions, budget, and willingness to respond when something fails.
