Use Selenium’s explicit wait to pause until the specific state your next action needs is true: presence to locate an element, visibility to interact with what is displayed, and clickability when it must be visible and enabled. An explicit wait polls until its condition succeeds or the timeout expires, avoiding a fixed sleep that may be too short or unnecessarily long.
Wait for the state your next step requires
Browser automation can reach a command before the web application is ready. Selenium’s waiting guide describes this as a race between the browser and automation code. An explicit wait checks a particular condition and continues when it succeeds; it does not simply sleep for the entire timeout.
| Need | Use | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Find an element in the DOM | Presence | The element can be located; it may still be hidden. |
| Work with an element that is displayed | Visibility | The element is present and visible. |
| Click an element | Clickability, where the binding provides it | In Python, visible and enabled. An overlay or page-specific behavior may still prevent a successful click. |
| Wait for removal or replacement | Invisibility or staleness | The old element is no longer visible or its DOM reference is no longer current. |
| Wait for content to change | Text or title condition | The specified text or page title condition has been met. |
Selenium’s Expected Conditions documentation describes these conditions and notes that support differs among language bindings. Choose the condition that matches the operation, not merely the earliest condition that happens to pass.
Python: wait for an element
This complete example waits up to 10 seconds for an element with ID result to become visible. It assumes driver is an initialized Selenium WebDriver session:

until returns the successful condition’s result; with this locator-based visibility condition, that result is the located element. If presence alone is enough, use EC.presence_of_element_located((By.ID, "result")). To wait for an already located element, use the corresponding element-based condition.
Use a custom condition when needed
A callable can express a check that has no suitable built-in condition. This example waits until the located element reports itself displayed:

wait.until(lambda d: d.find_element(By.ID, "result").is_displayed())
The predicate should return a truthy value when the condition is met. For locator-based built-in conditions, Selenium handles locating and retries as the wait polls.
Choose a timeout and understand polling
In Selenium Python API documentation version 4.50.0, WebDriverWait takes its timeout in seconds and documents a default polling interval of 0.5 seconds. It also documents NoSuchElementException as the default ignored exception. The constructor allows customizing polling and ignored exceptions; these are Python API details, not defaults to assume for every language binding. See the Python WebDriverWait API reference.

Set the timeout to fit the operation and the environment in which the test runs. It is the maximum time the wait will allow for the condition, not a delay that must elapse: the wait can finish as soon as the condition succeeds. Avoid choosing a timeout as a substitute for identifying the right condition.
Wait syntax differs by language

// Java
new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(2))
.until(d -> revealed.isDisplayed());
# Python
WebDriverWait(driver, timeout=2)
.until(lambda _: revealed.is_displayed())
// JavaScript
await driver.wait(until.elementIsVisible(revealed), 2000);
The examples show different timeout units: seconds in the Python example and milliseconds in JavaScript. The JavaScript WebDriver API documents driver.wait and its timeout and polling parameters. Do not copy a timeout number from one binding into another without checking its units and API.
Expected Conditions are not uniform across languages. Selenium notes that .NET stopped supporting its Expected Conditions in Selenium 4; Ruby commonly uses blocks, procs, and lambdas rather than an Expected Conditions class. Check the documentation for the binding and version your project uses.

Do not combine implicit and explicit waits
Selenium warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable wait times. An implicit wait affects element-finding calls, including calls made while an explicit condition is polling, so the resulting elapsed time can exceed the explicit timeout. Selenium illustrates a 10-second implicit wait combined with a 15-second explicit wait that could time out after 20 seconds; treat that as an example of the interaction, not a universal formula. Prefer explicit waits for condition-specific synchronization and avoid setting an implicit wait alongside them. Details are in Selenium’s waiting strategies documentation.
Troubleshoot waits that time out or interactions that fail
- The wait times out although the page loaded: Confirm the locator identifies the intended element and that the condition matches its actual state. Presence will not succeed for an element that has not entered the DOM; visibility will not succeed for a hidden element.
- The element is found but cannot be clicked: Presence does not establish visibility or enabled status. Wait for clickability where available, then investigate overlays or other page-specific causes if the click still fails. Selenium’s common errors guide covers interaction failures.
- A stored element reference stops working after an update: The application may have replaced the DOM node. Wait for staleness or the old element to disappear, then locate the current element rather than reusing the outdated reference.
- The timeout takes longer than expected: Check whether an implicit wait is configured in the session and remove the mixed wait configuration. Also verify the timeout’s units for the language binding.
- A built-in condition is unavailable: Confirm the binding’s supported API. Use its native wait pattern or a custom predicate that checks the required state.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot rather than browser interaction or a Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, use cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
