For Chrome full-page screenshots, use Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport: true. Selenium’s ordinary WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context, but that wording does not guarantee a full-document image in every browser and driver. Selenium also has driver-specific full-page screenshot support, including for FirefoxDriver, so check the exact browser, binding and version you use.

What the two approaches actually capture
Selenium WebDriver screenshot
Selenium’s WebDriver documentation describes its screenshot endpoint as capturing the current browsing context and returning Base64 image data. That is useful for ordinary browser screenshots, but it does not establish that all Selenium drivers return a tall image containing the entire document. Driver-specific APIs matter: Selenium’s Java API documents full-page screenshot support for FirefoxDriver through HasFullPageScreenshot.
Chrome DevTools Protocol
CDP’s Page.captureScreenshot command supports image format, optional JPEG quality, an optional clip region and captureBeyondViewport. The latter defaults to false, so explicitly set it to true when your goal is capture beyond the viewport. This is a Chrome-specific control, not a promise that the page has finished rendering or that lazy content has loaded. See the CDP command parameters.
How to capture beyond the viewport with Selenium and Chrome
The CDP request you need is Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport: true. Selenium provides DevTools access differently across language bindings and versions, so there is no single portable Selenium snippet or method signature to apply to every project. Use the Selenium DevTools API reference matching your installed binding and version, and confirm the generated command and response types there. Selenium’s .NET DevTools V148 API, for example, documents CaptureBeyondViewport with a default of false. Selenium .NET DevTools V148 reference.

captureBeyondViewporttotrue. Set the image format and, if applicable, JPEG quality. Supply a clip only when you want a bounded region rather than the full capture. - Decode the command’s returned image data and save it as an image file using the binding’s documented response type.
- Inspect the resulting image for missing lower-page content, blank areas or unexpected dimensions.
This is the protocol-level workflow, not copy-paste code: available Selenium methods differ by binding and release. Avoid copying a signature from another language or version. The CDP reference defines capture controls; it does not define a universal Selenium access pattern.
Make the capture repeatable
- Wait for the page condition that matters to your test, such as a specific element or completed update. The beyond-viewport setting itself does not wait for application rendering.
- Verify lazy-loaded images and other content explicitly; setting the capture flag does not establish that scrolling-dependent content has been triggered.
- Keep the same capture method, browser and driver versions, viewport or device metrics, page state and timing across baseline and comparison runs.
- Save the capture timestamp and environment details alongside the image so visual differences can be interpreted.
- Check the output artifact rather than assuming the API call produced the intended full-page result.
The cited API documentation does not publish a universal speed or image-quality comparison between Selenium screenshots and CDP. Choose based on the needed behavior and browser-specific support, not an assumed benchmark.

Common problems and fixes
The screenshot stops at the viewport
If using CDP, check that the command is Page.captureScreenshot and that captureBeyondViewport is explicitly true. If using Selenium’s ordinary screenshot method, check what the selected driver documents; do not assume its result covers the full document.
Your Selenium binding has no matching DevTools method
DevTools APIs are binding- and version-specific. Consult the API reference for the installed Selenium version and the browser’s supported protocol version rather than substituting a method signature from another release.

The image omits content that appears after loading
A screenshot command captures the page state it receives; the beyond-viewport option is not a page-readiness wait. Wait for the relevant element or application update, and verify whether lazy-loaded content needs to be triggered before capture.
The screenshot is clipped or uses the wrong format
Review the optional clip, format and JPEG quality parameters sent with the CDP command. A clip deliberately limits the captured region; image format determines the encoded output.

You need a PDF rather than an image
Use a PDF-generation path. The Selenium WebDriver screenshot and CDP screenshot methods described here return image data, not a PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium take a full-page screenshot in Chrome by default?
The ordinary WebDriver screenshot description does not guarantee a full-document image. Check the behavior documented for your Chrome driver and Selenium binding.
Does captureBeyondViewport: true load lazy images?
