Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Keep those tests focused, synchronize them with application state instead of guessed delays, and move setup that does not require a browser outside the UI. Use faster, lower-level tests wherever they can answer the question. Browser tests provide realistic coverage, but they cost more to run and need browser infrastructure.
When should you use Selenium?
Start by asking whether the behavior actually needs a browser. If a unit test or another lower-level test can establish it, that is usually the less expensive choice. Reserve Selenium for browser interactions and integration behavior that depend on a real browser. Selenium’s guidance emphasizes that no single approach fits every project: choose an approach that fits your application and test environment.
| Test level | What it is suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Unit or other lower-level test | Behavior that can be verified without exercising a real browser | Typically avoids the browser execution and infrastructure burden; it does not establish browser-specific behavior. |
| Selenium browser test | Interactions or integration behavior that depend on real browser behavior | More realistic for browser behavior, but more expensive to run and dependent on browser infrastructure. |
A useful browser test has a narrow purpose: establish its data, perform a discrete sequence of user-relevant actions, and evaluate the result. A long script that covers many unrelated outcomes takes longer and makes failures harder to diagnose.
How do you stop Selenium tests from being flaky?
Most avoidable timing flakiness comes from the test and application reaching a state at different times. A navigation wait can wait for document loading, but JavaScript may still be adding or revealing the element the test needs. Synchronize on that element’s required state, rather than assuming the page is ready because navigation returned.

Wait for the condition the next action needs
Use an explicit, condition-based wait for the relevant state—for example, that an element is visible before interacting with it. Selenium’s wait guidance explains the available synchronization mechanisms. Diagnose which condition is still false before increasing a timeout; a larger timeout does not fix a wrong locator or an application state that never arrives.
| Approach | Condition visibility | Failure behavior | Runtime cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed sleep | Does not check whether the required state has occurred. | Can continue too early if the delay is too short. | Always waits the chosen duration, including when the page becomes ready sooner. |
| Condition-based explicit wait | Checks the condition the following step depends on. | Times out if the condition never becomes true. | Can proceed as soon as the condition is satisfied. |
Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits
Do not combine implicit and explicit waits in the same session. Their timing can interact unpredictably, making it harder to understand how long a wait will take or why it timed out. Prefer an explicit wait for the particular condition your next step requires.

How should you structure Selenium tests?
Keep each test independent and focused
Give each test a fresh browser session where practical, and close its driver with quit during teardown. Avoid sharing a driver between tests: a shared session can carry cookies, navigation, or other state from one test into another. Selenium’s current encouraged practices recommend isolated sessions; adapt the details to your framework and resource limits.
Keep one test’s actions tied to a discrete behavior and its expected result. If a test fails, its scope should make it reasonably clear which behavior failed, without requiring you to reconstruct a long chain of unrelated steps.

Use Page Objects to centralize page structure
A Page Object represents a page or component and encapsulates its locators and page-specific operations. Tests call those operations instead of repeating knowledge of the page’s structure in many places. When the UI changes, centralizing that knowledge reduces the number of tests that need locator edits.
Keep behavioral assertions in the test, where the expected outcome is clear. A Page Object may check during construction that the expected page or essential content has loaded, but it should not absorb the test’s business assertions. For complex pages with repeated sections, component objects can encapsulate those sections. See Selenium’s Page Object Model guidance.

How should you prepare test data and login state?
Do not make every browser test repeat setup that can be performed more directly. When the application supports it, use an API or another non-browser mechanism to create test data or establish a logged-in state, then use Selenium for the browser interaction being tested. This reduces repeated UI work and keeps a failure focused on the behavior under test. Selenium’s state-generation guidance says Selenium should not be used to prepare a test case.
Keep the setup reproducible and specific to each test. If a test depends on shared or manually prepared state, failures can become difficult to reproduce and tests can interfere with each other.

How do you manage ChromeDriver and other browser drivers?
Selenium Manager is Selenium’s official driver manager. It has been included with Selenium releases beginning in version 4.6. If a driver has not been supplied, Selenium bindings invoke Selenium Manager as a fallback. Teams can still manage drivers themselves when their environment or workflow requires it.
If a session cannot start, check which browser and driver the environment is using and whether your project supplies a driver explicitly. If it does not, confirm that the Selenium version includes Selenium Manager and inspect the driver-management error before changing test logic.
When should you use Selenium Grid?
Use local execution while it meets the suite’s needs. Selenium Grid is intended for running tests across machines and browser/operating-system combinations; it adds infrastructure and operational overhead. Adopt it when distributed execution or wider environment coverage is useful enough to justify that overhead, not as a prerequisite for a small local suite. Selenium describes Grid in its official documentation.
| Consideration | Local execution | Distributed execution with Grid |
|---|---|---|
| Where tests run | On the local machine or environment configured for the suite | Across machines configured for Grid |
| Browser and OS coverage | Limited to environments you run locally | Can cover browser/OS combinations available in the Grid setup |
| Infrastructure overhead | Lower for a small suite | Higher: Grid needs to be configured and operated |
| When it fits | Local development and suites that do not need distributed execution | When parallel or cross-environment execution is needed |
What should you check when a Selenium test fails?
- The next action runs before the page is ready: replace the fixed sleep or assumption about navigation with an explicit wait for the required element state.
- An explicit wait times out: verify the locator and the expected state, then confirm the application can reach that state. Increase the timeout only if the condition is valid but needs more time.
- Waits take unexpectedly long: check whether implicit and explicit waits are mixed in the session; use condition-based explicit waits instead.
- Tests pass alone but fail in a suite: look for a shared driver or leaked browser state. Give tests isolated sessions and call
quitin teardown. - Driver startup fails: determine whether the project supplies a driver. If not, check the Selenium version and Selenium Manager behavior; if it does, check the configured driver and browser environment.
- Failures are hard to locate: split oversized scripts into tests for discrete behaviors and keep setup, actions, and result evaluation clear.
