To run Selenium tests remotely, keep your test code on the client and send its WebDriver commands to a reachable Selenium Grid URL. Grid starts the requested browser on a remote machine and returns the results. In Selenium 4, create a RemoteWebDriver with both the Grid address and an options object for the browser. For a first test, run Grid in Standalone mode at http://localhost:4444; use a network-reachable Grid address when the test client and browser machine are separate. Selenium’s Remote WebDriver guide documents the client connection pattern.
How RemoteWebDriver and Selenium Grid work
RemoteWebDriver is the client-side connection pattern; Selenium Grid provides the remote browser infrastructure. Your test runs on the client, which sends WebDriver commands to Grid. Grid routes them to a browser session on one of its machines, and the responses return to the client.
The client needs two things to create a session: a Grid URL it can reach and browser options describing the requested browser. The options can request details such as a browser version or platform, but Grid must have a matching browser available. In Selenium 4, use the browser’s Options class; older examples based on Desired Capabilities reflect a Selenium 3-era configuration style. See Selenium Browser Options.
Start a local Grid and run a first remote test
Standalone mode is the simplest way to try remote execution on one machine. Download the Selenium Server JAR from the official Selenium project, then start it with Java. The following commands assume the JAR is in the current directory; replace the filename with the version you downloaded.

import java.net.URL;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
import org.openqa.selenium.remote.RemoteWebDriver;
public class RemoteSmokeTest {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
WebDriver driver = new RemoteWebDriver(
new URL("http://localhost:4444"), options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
System.out.println(driver.findElement(By.tagName("h1")).getText());
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
This requests Chrome, navigates to a page, prints its main heading, and closes the remote session even if a test step fails. The remote machine, not the client, must have a usable Chrome browser and matching driver support. The Selenium Grid getting-started guide describes starting Standalone and its defaults: Getting started with Selenium Grid.
Connect from JavaScript or a CI runner
JavaScript
The Selenium JavaScript API uses a Builder with a browser selection and server URL. Install the Selenium WebDriver package in the project before running this example:
const { Builder, Browser } = require('selenium-webdriver');
(async function run() {
const driver = await new Builder()
.forBrowser(Browser.CHROME)
.usingServer('http://localhost:4444')
.build();
try {
await driver.get('https://example.com');
console.log(await driver.getTitle());
} finally {
await driver.quit();
}
})();
The JavaScript API also documents SELENIUM_REMOTE_URL as an alternative way to supply the remote endpoint. Check the API reference for the syntax supported by your installed package: Selenium WebDriver JavaScript API.
Point a test client at another machine
When tests run on a CI runner and Grid runs elsewhere, replace the localhost URL with the Grid address reachable from that runner, for example http://grid-host:4444. The hostname is an example, not a public Selenium service. Confirm routing, firewall rules, DNS, and the Grid listener address from the client’s network. A URL that works on the Grid host itself may not be reachable from a separate runner.
Choose a Grid deployment mode
| Mode | Machine arrangement | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone | One process on one machine, serving the browser sessions available there. | Local debugging or a small CI setup. | Simple to start, but browser capacity and platform diversity are bounded by that machine. |
| Hub and Node | A Hub provides one entry point; Nodes contribute browser capacity. | Different machines or browser versions, or when capacity must scale beyond one host. | More components and network configuration to operate. |
| Distributed | Grid components run separately across a deployment. | Larger or customized deployments with more control over component placement. | Requires more deployment and operational work. |
Choose based on machine count, required browser and operating-system diversity, parallel capacity, and how much infrastructure your team can operate. Grid supports parallel execution and cross-platform/browser-version testing, but its documentation cautions that sizing depends on the environment; there is no universal machine size. Treat default resource values as recommendations and measure performance in your own setup. See Grid getting started.

Configure browser options and Grid
Use an Options class for the browser you intend to run, such as ChromeOptions or the corresponding class for another supported browser. Options may request a browser version or platform when the Grid has a node that can satisfy the request. If no matching capacity is available, the session cannot be created. Selenium’s Browser Options documentation explains the options model.
Grid settings can be supplied as command-line flags or through TOML configuration files. For example, Standalone settings include the listening port and maximum sessions. The exact switches and defaults can change between Selenium Server releases, so check the installed server’s help output and the documentation for that release before relying on a particular setting. The official references are CLI options and TOML configuration options; TOML can make configuration easier to review and keep in source control.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHandle files differently in remote sessions
Uploads
A file path used by a remote browser can refer to the remote machine, while the file you want to upload commonly starts on the test client. Do not assume a client-local path exists on the browser host. Selenium documents remote upload handling for transferring a client-side file to the remote session; follow that mechanism rather than passing an unrelated local path directly. See Remote WebDriver.
Downloads
To retrieve downloads through Grid, managed downloads must be enabled on the Grid and opted into by the session/client configuration. A download listing is only a snapshot of files; seeing an entry does not prove the download has finished. Synchronize on the application’s completion signal or otherwise verify the expected file is complete before retrieving or checking it. Configuration details are in Grid CLI options and the Remote WebDriver guide.
Protect the Grid endpoint
A Grid endpoint is powerful infrastructure, not a public test URL. Selenium warns that external access can expose the Grid host, internal applications and files, and may allow third parties to run custom binaries. Keep the endpoint behind appropriate network controls and restrict which clients can reach it. Selenium’s guidance is explicit: “Selenium Grid must be protected from external access using appropriate firewall permissions.” See Getting started with Selenium Grid.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website capture rather than an interactive Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF, and the API handles browser execution for the capture.
cURL example; replace the target URL and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does RemoteWebDriver run my test code on the Grid machine?
No. The test code stays on the client; Grid runs the browser and receives its WebDriver commands.
Can I use Selenium Grid without multiple machines?
Yes. Standalone mode runs on one machine and is suitable for a first remote-session demonstration.
