Selenium Grid runs WebDriver tests in remote browser sessions, making it useful when you need to exercise interactions in selected browsers and operating systems. Applitools Ultrafast Grid takes captured application state from visual checkpoints and renders it across browser and device combinations for visual comparison. Use Selenium Grid for real-browser functional execution, Ultrafast Grid for broader visual regression coverage, or both when your test strategy needs both kinds of evidence.
What is the difference between Selenium Grid and Applitools Ultrafast Grid?
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands from a test client to remote browser instances. Its documented purpose includes running tests in parallel across browser types, browser versions, and operating systems. Applitools Ultrafast Grid is a cloud visual-testing service: a test captures application state at visual checkpoints, and the service renders that state across requested environments for comparison. Selenium Grid documentation · Applitools Ultrafast Grid
| Decision | Selenium Grid | Applitools Ultrafast Grid |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Execute WebDriver sessions in remote, configured browsers. | Render captured application state across browser and device combinations and compare the resulting visuals. |
| What it validates | Functional behavior exercised through browser sessions, including interaction flows. | Visual differences such as layout, fonts, and rendering at visual checkpoints. |
| Where execution happens | On nodes and machines the team deploys and sizes. | In a cloud service described by Applitools; supported combinations and service terms depend on current availability. |
| Scaling constraint | Available node slots, requested browser/platform combinations, and machine resources. | Current plan limits and concurrency terms. |
| Typical reason to choose | You need control of the execution environment or browser-specific functional behavior. | You need visual comparisons across many environments integrated with an existing test framework. |
| Cost model | The Grid software is downloadable; infrastructure and engineering operations still have costs. | Commercial subscription; check the current plan, limits, and terms. |
The distinction matters because a visual match is not proof that every interaction works in every browser. A rendered checkpoint can reveal presentation differences, while behavior such as a menu opening, a payment flow completing, or a browser-specific event firing still calls for suitable functional checks.
When should you use Selenium Grid for cross-browser testing?
Choose Selenium Grid when your test needs to operate an actual configured browser session, especially for functional behavior that may vary by browser, browser version, or operating system. You select the requested environment through capabilities, and the Grid Distributor assigns the session to an available node slot. The documented Grid architecture includes an Event Bus, New Session Queue, Distributor, Node, Session Map, and Router; nodes run sessions, while the Distributor allocates them according to requested capabilities. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use it for workflows where clicks, keyboard input, navigation, browser storage, or browser-specific behavior must be exercised.
- Use it when you need to control which browser builds, platforms, or machines execute tests.
- Plan for operating the infrastructure: deploy and maintain nodes, ensure required browsers are available, and size capacity for concurrent sessions.
Selenium’s setup guidance says capacity depends on the operating systems and browsers required, parallel session count, machine count, and machine capability. It gives CPU-based concurrency examples and says a browser session is expected to use around 1 GB of RAM. Treat that figure as Selenium planning guidance, not a guaranteed requirement for every browser or workload. Selenium Grid getting started
When does Applitools Ultrafast Grid fit better?
Choose Ultrafast Grid when visual regression is the main coverage gap: for example, checking that a page’s layout, typography, or rendering remains consistent across a browser and device matrix. Applitools describes a workflow in which an existing test captures state at visual checkpoints, then the Grid renders that state across requested environments and returns visual comparison results. This is the vendor’s explanation of its implementation, not an independent architectural audit. Applitools’ Ultrafast Grid explanation

Applitools says its SDKs integrate with frameworks including Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, and Appium. That means Ultrafast Grid can add visual checks to an existing automation workflow rather than requiring Selenium to be removed. Applitools describes Visual AI as handling harmless rendering differences; treat that as a product capability claim, not a guarantee that every visual difference will be classified correctly for your application. Can Applitools Ultrafast Grid replace Selenium Grid?
Not when you need the same real-browser functional execution Selenium Grid provides. The products’ documented roles differ: Selenium Grid runs remote WebDriver sessions; Ultrafast Grid renders captured state for visual comparison. You can use Ultrafast Grid to broaden visual coverage while retaining functional tests in selected real browser sessions. Whether that changes how many full browser sessions your suite needs depends on the application, risk, and test design; there is no universal or fixed reduction.

How to decide: use one, the other, or both
- List the risks. Separate interaction failures (for example, a control that does not respond) from presentation regressions (for example, a layout that shifts at a viewport size).
- Map each risk to evidence. Use remote browser sessions for behavior that must be exercised; use visual checkpoints for appearance that must be compared across environments.
- Choose the browser matrix deliberately. Run functional sessions on environments important to user behavior and support requirements. Choose visual environments based on the layouts and devices you need to guard.
- Model parallel capacity and operating responsibility. For Selenium Grid, estimate available node slots and machine resources. For Applitools, confirm current supported combinations, concurrency, plan limits, and service terms.
- Review security and data handling. Assess the test data, captured page content, deployment context, and current service or contract terms before sending application state to a hosted service.
If the team needs both interaction coverage and visual comparison, using the tools together is a reasonable design inference from their different functions—not a vendor-neutral benchmark or a guarantee of reduced test time.
Cost, capacity, and performance considerations
Selenium Grid: software is not the full operating cost
Selenium Grid is project software, but a production setup uses compute and engineering time. Capacity is bounded by available nodes and their resources, the browser/platform combinations requested, and how many sessions can run concurrently. Selenium’s applicability documentation gives this simplified execution-time relationship: Number of Tests * Average Test Time / Number of Nodes = Total Execution Time. It is an illustrative calculation, not a general performance benchmark; real duration also depends on workload and how sessions are provisioned. Selenium Grid applicability

Applitools: verify current plan terms
Applitools’ pricing page listed Starter at $667 per month when paid annually when accessed in 2026; pricing is volatile, so confirm the live price, plan limits, and concurrency before budgeting. Higher-tier terms were described as customizable. Do not compare a hosted subscription directly with the Grid software price alone: include infrastructure and operations for a self-managed Grid. Claims and trade-offs to interpret carefully
Applitools’ product page states “up to 99%” reduction in test flakiness. This is a vendor claim; no independent apples-to-apples comparative result is established here. Evaluate it against your own suite and failure criteria rather than treating it as a guaranteed outcome. Applitools cross-browser testing
