There is no single “Selenium framework” to choose. Selenium is an umbrella project: WebDriver controls browsers, while a test runner such as JUnit or pytest organizes and runs test cases. IDE, Grid, BDD tools, and design patterns serve different roles and can be combined. Start with your team’s programming language and existing test ecosystem, then add only the Selenium components your workflow needs.

What does “Selenium framework” mean?

The phrase is used for several different layers of browser testing. Keeping those layers separate makes the choice clearer. Selenium describes itself as “an umbrella project for a range of tools and libraries that enable and support the automation of web browsers.” Selenium Overview

Layer What it does When it fits
WebDriver Provides an API to control a browser programmatically through browser-vendor automation APIs. Use it as the foundation for coded browser tests that interact with pages as a user would.
Test runner Discovers, organizes, and executes test cases; commonly supplies assertions, setup and teardown hooks, and grouping. Choose one that works with your language, build tools, and test-team habits.
Selenium IDE A Chrome and Firefox extension for recording and playing back user actions. Useful for exploring commands, learning, or lightweight record-and-playback tasks.
Selenium Grid Routes WebDriver commands to remote browser instances. Use it when tests need remote machines, parallel execution, or coverage across browser versions and platforms.
BDD layer Manages human-readable scenarios and connects them to executable step definitions. Add it when shared, readable specifications help collaboration; Selenium can perform browser actions within the steps.
Design pattern, such as Page Object Model Structures automation code and repeated page interactions. Use a pattern to improve maintainability; it is not a Selenium component or runner.

WebDriver and a test runner are complementary, not competing choices. Likewise, Grid changes where and how browser sessions run, while IDE changes how actions can be authored. A page-object design can sit on top of WebDriver and any compatible runner.

Which test runner should you use with Selenium?

Choose first by the language your application and test team already use. Selenium lists several runner options by language, but does not name one universal winner. Selenium test framework options

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Language Runner options listed by Selenium
Java JUnit, TestNG
Python pytest, unittest
.NET NUnit, MSTest
Ruby RSpec, Minitest
JavaScript Jest, Mocha
Kotlin Kotest, JUnit 5

Within your language’s options, compare the capabilities your suite actually needs:

  • How tests are discovered, grouped, and reported.
  • Setup and teardown hooks, fixtures, and assertion style.
  • Parameterization and parallel execution.
  • Integration with your build system, plugins, and reporting tools.
  • How easy it is for the team to debug failures and maintain existing tests.

Selenium’s documentation highlights hooks and grouping as useful for organizing advanced suites, and notes TestNG’s parameterized and parallel features. Treat those as selection criteria, not proof that TestNG is best for every Java project. Prefer the runner the team already understands unless a specific requirement justifies adding or changing one.

How to choose the Selenium components

  1. Start with the language binding. Match the language to the team’s skills and the application’s build ecosystem.
  2. Pick a runner. Use a familiar runner unless a concrete need—such as parameterized suites or parallel execution—makes another a better fit.
  3. Use WebDriver for coded browser tests. Keep tests focused, and place repeated page interactions behind clear helpers or page objects where that improves maintainability. Selenium test practices
  4. Use IDE for exploration or a low-code starting point. Recording and playback can help someone learn actions, but it is not automatically a substitute for a maintainable coded suite.
  5. Add Grid when local runs are insufficient. Grid is an execution infrastructure component for remote and distributed browser runs, not a test runner. Selenium defines it as routing client commands to remote browser instances. Selenium Grid
  6. Add BDD only for a collaboration need. A readable scenario language and shared specifications can help teams communicate requirements; they also add step definitions and another layer to maintain.

When are BDD and page objects useful?

BDD: readable specifications with an execution layer

BDD tools organize human-readable scenarios and map them to executable steps. Use this approach when product, QA, and development participants benefit from reviewing requirements in a shared scenario format. If the scenario needs UI validation, Selenium can provide the browser interaction. BDD does not replace WebDriver or the runner that executes the underlying code. Selenium and behavior-driven development

Page Object Model: code organization, not a runner

Page Object Model is a way to represent pages and their interactions in automation code, helping keep repeated page operations organized. It can be combined with WebDriver and a runner; it does not control browsers or execute tests by itself. Selenium includes it among its test-practice guidance. Selenium Page Object Models

Common selection mistakes

  • Comparing unlike categories: WebDriver controls the browser, while JUnit or pytest runs tests. Choose both roles rather than asking which is “better.”
  • Calling every pattern a framework: BDD and page objects add specification or organization approaches; neither is a standalone Selenium browser driver.
  • Adding Grid too early: Grid addresses remote and distributed execution needs. If local runs meet coverage and throughput requirements, another infrastructure layer may add unnecessary maintenance.
  • Choosing by popularity claims: Selenium’s documented lists provide options, not a universal ranking. Match capabilities to team requirements instead.
  • Adding BDD without a reader: If no one benefits from shared scenario language, step definitions can become an extra abstraction without solving a real communication problem.

Or skip the browser setup

If your immediate task is capturing a web page rather than building a browser test suite, ScreenshotNeo is a separate option: a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Selenium framework. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For example, the cURL request below saves a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
