Run Selenium Grid locally first: install Java 11 or newer, a browser, and the Selenium Server JAR, then start java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone. Your remote WebDriver endpoint and Grid UI will be available at http://localhost:4444. Point a RemoteWebDriver test at that URL to execute in the browser managed by Grid.
This guide explains what Grid does, provides working examples, shows how to size and secure it, and then covers the point at which a multi-node, containerized, or managed service makes more sense.
What Selenium Grid actually provides
Selenium Grid is an execution layer for WebDriver tests. WebDriver is the W3C browser-automation API; a browser-specific driver communicates with the browser, while Grid routes your test’s session request to a suitable browser instance on a node. That separation lets one test suite cover different browsers, browser versions, operating systems, and parallel copies of a browser.
Grid does not replace your test framework or WebDriver bindings. Your assertions and test code remain the same; only the driver endpoint changes from a local browser driver to Grid’s URL. Grid 4’s internal services include a Router, New Session Queue, Distributor, Session Map, Event Bus, and Nodes. In Standalone mode these components run together in one process, so you do not have to configure each service separately.

Prerequisites and the fastest working setup
Install the required software
- Java 11 or higher.
- At least one supported browser installed on the machine running Grid.
- The matching browser driver, unless you let Selenium Manager configure drivers.
- The Selenium Server JAR. Check the official Grid getting-started page for the current download and version rather than copying an old version number.
Selenium Manager can automate driver (and, where supported, browser) management. When configuring it for Grid, enable it explicitly with --selenium-manager true.
Start Standalone Grid
- Open a terminal in the directory containing the downloaded JAR.
- Run:
java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone - Leave the process running. Open http://localhost:4444 to see the Grid UI and use that same address as the remote WebDriver endpoint.
To ask Grid to manage drivers, use:
java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone --selenium-manager true
Standalone is intended for local development and debugging, quick pre-push suites, and straightforward CI. It runs browser sessions on one machine, so it is not a high-availability service.
Point a test at http://localhost:4444
The following Python example uses Selenium 4. Install the binding with pip install selenium. The browser choice is sent as a capability; Grid starts a matching slot.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor="http://localhost:4444",
options=options,
)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
For Java, add the Selenium Java dependency to your build and create a remote driver:

WebDriver driver = new RemoteWebDriver(
URI.create("http://localhost:4444").toURL(), options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
System.out.println(driver.getTitle());
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
Use the hostname reachable from the test process. If the test runs in a container, localhost means that container, not your host; use the host’s service name or an appropriate network address instead. Always call quit() so Grid releases the session slot.
Parallel execution and browser coverage
Grid is useful when serial execution makes feedback too slow or when the same suite must run against a browser/OS matrix. Parallelism is bounded by available node capacity, CPU, memory, browser licenses or platform availability, and the way your tests isolate data.
Size for measured workload
Selenium’s guidance says a node’s default browser-session capacity is generally limited by available CPUs; Safari is limited to one session. It gives roughly 1 GB of RAM per browser session as a planning reference, not a guarantee. Measure your own pages, browser versions, headless settings, downloads, and test data before selecting concurrency.
The official “When to Use Grid” page contains illustrative arithmetic: 15 tests taking 45 seconds each total 11 minutes 15 seconds serially, 2 minutes 15 seconds with five nodes, and 45 seconds with 15 nodes. A separate 100-test illustration at 120 seconds each is shown as 13 minutes 20 seconds with 15 nodes versus more than three hours without Grid. These are project examples, not benchmarks or promises for your hardware.

Make tests parallel-safe
- Give each test its own account, tenant, files, and temporary directory.
- Do not assume a shared current working directory or a fixed browser profile.
- Use explicit waits instead of sleeps where possible; slow pages otherwise occupy slots unnecessarily.
- Capture logs and screenshots on failure, and always terminate sessions in teardown code.
When to move beyond Standalone
Hub-and-Node or fully distributed Grid
Use Hub-and-Node when one entry point must coordinate machines or when one host cannot provide the required browser/OS matrix or concurrency. Distributed mode runs Grid components separately: a Router receives requests, the Distributor selects a node, and Nodes provide browser slots. This adds deployment, discovery, upgrades, observability, and failure-management work.
Containers and Kubernetes
The Docker Selenium project provides images for containerized browsers and Grid arrangements. Kubernetes deployments can use the documented Helm route. Containers make repeatable images and horizontal scaling easier, but you still need to control CPU and memory limits, shared artifacts, browser image updates, networking, and cleanup of abandoned sessions.
Managed cloud browser testing
A managed service can remove node patching, browser-image maintenance, and much of the Grid operations burden. Evaluate current browser and OS coverage, supported versions, geographic regions, concurrency limits, session retention, network access to private applications, security controls, data handling, and current pricing. Historical Selenium documentation mentions cloud vendors, but those examples do not establish present-day support or prices.
| Choice | Best fit | What you own | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone | Local development, debugging, small CI suites | One machine, browser and driver installation | Limited capacity and platform coverage |
| Multi-node or container Grid | Higher parallelism and a controlled browser matrix | Grid services, nodes, images, networking, upgrades and security | More operational complexity |
| Managed cloud service | Teams that want outsourced browser infrastructure | Test code, credentials, network integration and vendor configuration | Ongoing service cost and provider-specific limits |
Secure the WebDriver endpoint
Do not expose an unauthenticated Grid directly to the internet. Selenium’s documentation warns that an exposed Grid can let third parties reach Grid infrastructure and internal applications or files, and potentially run custom binaries. Put Grid on a private network, restrict inbound traffic with firewall rules or security groups, and allow only trusted CI runners and developers. Add an authenticated reverse proxy or private tunnel where appropriate, avoid placing secrets in command-line arguments that CI logs, and monitor session creation and node health.

Troubleshooting common failures
Connection refused at port 4444
Confirm the JAR process is running, that it did not exit with a Java error, and that the test uses the correct host and port. From a container, replace localhost with the reachable Grid service name.
SessionNotCreatedException
The requested browser may be absent, the driver may be incompatible, or all matching slots may be busy. Install the browser, enable Selenium Manager, verify capabilities, and inspect the Grid UI for node availability.
Driver or browser version mismatch
Update the browser and driver together, or let Selenium Manager resolve them. Pin versions in CI images when reproducibility matters and update them deliberately.
Sessions remain after a failed test
Put driver.quit() in a finally block or framework teardown hook. Set sensible test timeouts and clean abandoned sessions at the infrastructure layer.

Tests are slower with more nodes
Check CPU throttling, RAM pressure, startup time, network latency, test-data contention, and the actual number of free matching slots. More nodes do not guarantee linear speedup.

Operational checklist
- Verify Java, browser, driver, and Selenium Server versions in CI.
- Keep the Grid endpoint private and firewall-restricted.
- Record browser, platform, node, session, and test identifiers with failures.
- Measure queue time, session startup, test duration, CPU, RAM, and failure rate before increasing concurrency.
- Reassess Standalone when the matrix, parallel demand, or operational burden outgrows one host.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium Grid run without a separate Hub process?
Yes. Grid 4 Standalone runs the Grid components in one Selenium Server process and serves the endpoint at http://localhost:4444.
Is Selenium Grid the same as a cloud browser provider?
No. Grid is software you run to route WebDriver sessions. A managed provider operates the browser infrastructure for you; compare its current coverage, limits, security and price separately.
When should I add nodes?
Add nodes when measured queue time or required browser/OS coverage exceeds one machine’s capacity, and confirm that your tests are isolated enough to run concurrently.
The Bottom Line
Start with Standalone Grid and http://localhost:4444; move to distributed or managed infrastructure only when measured coverage, concurrency, or operations justify it. Keep every Grid endpoint private.
