To click a web element in Selenium, locate the intended interactive element and call its click() method. Selenium scrolls an out-of-viewport element into view, aims at its center, and checks whether that point is interactable. A reliable test also waits for the page state it needs after the click, because a click alone does not guarantee that asynchronous work or navigation has finished.
This guide shows the normal command, complete Python examples, explicit waits, the causes and fixes for intercepted and non-interactable clicks, and when the Actions API is the better choice.
Basic Selenium click syntax
The everyday pattern is three operations: find the element, verify that the locator identifies the control a user would use, and invoke click() on that WebElement.

Use a locator for the actual control
Prefer a stable ID, an accessibility-oriented attribute, or a CSS selector that identifies the button, link, checkbox, or other interactive node itself. Avoid selecting a broad container when the clickable control is a child. If a page renders both desktop and mobile copies, make the locator specific enough to select the visible copy in the current layout.
What WebDriver does when you call click()
The click point is the element center
Selenium’s element-click command dispatches the click at the center of the target element. A visually present element can therefore fail if another element covers that center point, even when part of the target remains visible.
Out-of-view elements are scrolled into view
As part of the documented element-interaction flow, WebDriver scrolls an element that is outside the viewport into view before attempting the click. Scrolling is not a substitute for choosing the right node: a hidden duplicate or a non-interactive wrapper can still fail after scrolling.
Interactability is checked before dispatch
Selenium checks whether the element can be interacted with. If it is not displayed, keyboard-interactable, or pointer-interactable, the command can return an ElementNotInteractableException. If the center point is covered by another element, the result can instead be an ElementClickInterceptedException.

A click is not a completion signal
Do not treat a successful click() call as proof that a navigation, API request, animation, or client-side state update has completed. Wait for the specific result your test needs, such as a URL change, a visible confirmation, or disappearance of a modal. The Java API documentation also cautions that a native click generally does not wait for the next page load; binding behavior should be checked against the language and Selenium version you use. Wait until an element is ready to click
In Python, Selenium’s documented element_to_be_clickable expected condition checks that an element is visible and enabled, then returns it. Use it with WebDriverWait rather than inserting a fixed sleep.

pay_button.click()This condition is a useful precondition, not a guarantee that an overlay will remain absent until the next line. A cookie prompt, sticky header, modal, or animation can appear after the condition succeeds and intercept the center point.
Wait for the state that matters after the click
Pair the click with a post-click condition instead of assuming timing:

wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".receipt")))For a dialog that should close, wait for its invisibility. For a progress indicator, wait for it to disappear. These conditions describe the application outcome and make the test less sensitive to machine speed.
Fixing ElementClickInterceptedException
This exception means that something other than the intended element occupies the click point when Selenium tries to dispatch the action. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies overlapping UI such as sticky navigation, pop-ups, and modals; an animation can also move an obstruction over the target.
Inspect the obstruction
- Capture the page state at the failure and identify which element is at the target’s center.
- Check for consent banners, newsletter prompts, chat widgets, sticky headers, modal backdrops, and loading layers.
- Determine whether the obstruction is expected application state or an unexpected duplicate element.
Wait for an expected overlay to clear
Locate the overlay with a stable selector and wait for it to become invisible or disappear. Then re-find the target and click it; re-finding avoids holding a reference to an element whose layout may have changed.

wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable(target)).click()If the banner must be accepted rather than merely waited out, click its visible accept control first, wait for the banner to disappear, and then obtain the target again.
Account for animation
An element can be visible and enabled while a transition is still moving it or while a backdrop is fading. Wait for the animation’s observable end state—usually the overlay becoming invisible or a class indicating completion—rather than adding an arbitrary long sleep. If the application exposes no useful state, a short, bounded wait may be a last resort, but it is less reliable than waiting on a DOM condition.

Fixing ElementNotInteractableException
This error generally means that the located node exists but cannot receive the requested interaction.
- Hidden node: the selector matched a DOM copy that is not displayed.
- Wrong node type: the selector matched a container, label, or other wrapper instead of the interactive button, link, or input.
- Unsupported target: the element is not usable through the requested pointer or keyboard interaction.
- Multiple matches: the first match is non-interactable while another match is the visible control.
Correct the locator, confirm that the intended element is displayed and enabled, and wait for the application to render it. Do not “fix” a wrong locator by repeatedly retrying the same node.
Choosing click() or the Actions API
Use the element method for an ordinary click
For one normal click on one located element, element.click() is the clearest and most faithful command. It uses WebDriver’s standard element-interaction behavior, including scrolling and interactability checks.

Use Actions for a deliberate input sequence
The Actions API is a lower-level interface for granular virtual pointer, keyboard, and wheel input. Choose it when the test needs a specific sequence—such as moving to a coordinate, pausing, holding a button, or combining pointer and keyboard events—not merely because a regular click failed.

Reliability and performance practices
- Keep locators tied to the control’s role or stable attributes, not transient layout details.
- Use one explicit wait around the action and one explicit wait for its result; avoid stacking long fixed sleeps.
- Re-locate after a modal closes, a list refreshes, or a layout-changing animation completes.
- Log the URL, locator, exception type, and visible overlay state when a click fails. That evidence distinguishes a bad locator from a real obstruction.
- Keep the timeout bounded and appropriate to the application. Excessively long values hide regressions; values that are too short create false failures.
The WebDriver command itself has no price or usage meter. Any cost comes from the browser, test infrastructure, or hosted execution service around it, so reliability improvements should be measured against the runtime environment you operate.
