Selenium 4 uses the W3C WebDriver protocol for ordinary browser-control commands: a language binding sends commands to a local browser driver or a remote Selenium server, and that remote end controls the browser. Selenium Grid adds a routing and scheduling layer when sessions must run on other machines. Selenium Manager handles much of local browser-driver setup, while WebDriver BiDi adds a separate WebSocket channel for browser events.
What Selenium WebDriver architecture means
Selenium is an umbrella project of tools and libraries for browser automation. Its WebDriver architecture separates the API a test uses from the protocol that carries browser commands and the remote end that executes them. The W3C describes WebDriver as a platform- and language-neutral interface for inspecting and controlling a browser; the current W3C materials include a WebDriver Recommendation dated June 5, 2018, as well as a later Working Draft dated July 2, 2026. The latter is a draft, not a replacement Recommendation. W3C WebDriver status
For ordinary Selenium 4 WebDriver traffic, do not picture the old JSON Wire Protocol as the only protocol in use. The client and remote end communicate through WebDriver commands; Selenium describes WebDriver as driving browsers natively through browser-vendor automation APIs. Selenium overview
How a local WebDriver command reaches the browser
- The test calls a language binding. Python, Java, and other Selenium bindings expose methods such as creating a session, finding an element, or navigating to a URL.
- The binding sends WebDriver commands. The binding acts as the local end and serializes commands for the remote end according to the WebDriver protocol.
- A browser-specific driver acts as the remote end. In a local session, the binding starts or connects to the local driver endpoint. That driver launches or controls the installed browser.
- The browser performs the action. The result travels back through the driver and binding to the test, which can then assert on the page or issue another command.
The browser driver is a protocol endpoint, not the test itself: the test expresses intent through the binding, and the driver mediates commands to the browser. W3C describes the local end commonly as a language-specific library providing an API over the protocol and the remote end as its server side. W3C WebDriver Working Draft, May 28, 2026

Local sessions versus RemoteWebDriver and Grid
| Approach | Where commands run | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local WebDriver | On the machine running the test, against a browser available there | Development, debugging, or a suite that needs one machine’s browser setup | Coverage is limited to that machine’s available browser and operating-system environment. |
| RemoteWebDriver with Grid | At a Selenium server/Grid endpoint, on a selected Grid Node | Running tests across machines, platforms, browser types, or concurrent sessions | Requires server and network configuration, capacity planning, and secured access. |
A local Python script does not require the Java Selenium server. For remote execution, use RemoteWebDriver with a Grid server URL and browser options or capabilities; the remote endpoint then handles allocation and execution. Selenium Python API documentation Selenium overview
How Selenium Grid routes a test
Grid is a group of cooperating services, not one browser driver with a queue bolted on. A new-session request describes the browser capabilities it needs. Grid routes that request to an available matching slot, and later commands for the created session must return to the Node that owns it. The six named component roles are:
- Router: the entry point for clients. It directs new-session requests toward the queue and sends commands for an existing session to its owning Node.
- New Session Queue: holds requests until the Distributor can assign a suitable slot.
- Distributor: evaluates requested capabilities against available slots and assigns a matching Node.
- Node: runs browser sessions. A Node can advertise multiple browser slot types; its maximum-session setting separately limits concurrency.
- Session Map: records which Node owns each active session so the Router can send subsequent commands correctly.
- Event Bus: carries asynchronous messages among Grid components.
A slot is a place where a session may run. Its stereotype is the minimum capability set a request must match. The Distributor schedules from its view of Grid state; during startup or other state changes, that view can temporarily differ from reality, so it is a scheduling model rather than a perfect live inventory. Two communication patterns inside Grid
Grid uses synchronous REST-like JSON over HTTP for calls that need a response, including most WebDriver commands. It also uses asynchronous Event Bus messages for information that can be broadcast without waiting for a response. Grid is therefore not a single synchronous HTTP chain from test to browser. Selenium Grid architecture
Standalone and distributed deployment
The Grid getting-started guide documents both a standalone quick start and distributed component setup. Treat its port defaults and deployment commands as version-sensitive: confirm the current guide before copying them into a deployment. A one-machine local example is not a production network or capacity plan. Selenium Grid getting started
Do you still need to download ChromeDriver?
Usually not for ordinary local Selenium use. Selenium Manager, implemented in Rust and used by Selenium bindings by default, automates much of browser and driver management. In common cases, a binding can resolve the needed driver when you instantiate WebDriver without a separate manual download. This convenience is not guaranteed in every environment: offline machines, locked-down networks, custom browser locations, pinned versions, or unsupported configurations can still call for manual installation and configuration. Choosing automatic or manual management
- Use Selenium Manager when its automatic resolution fits your machine and you want less setup overhead.
- Manage binaries explicitly when the environment requires offline operation, strict browser-driver pinning, or custom paths. Document the versions and paths so CI and developer machines use the intended setup.
- Diagnose resolution failures by checking network access, browser installation and version, permissions, and any explicit driver configuration. Do not assume the failure is a WebDriver protocol issue if the browser session never starts.
Runnable local example in Python
The following is a minimal local session using Selenium’s Python binding. The Python API documentation showed Selenium 4.50.0 and Python 3.10+ when consulted; these are binding-specific, time-sensitive details, so check the current documentation for your chosen language and environment. - Install Selenium in the Python environment:
python -m pip install selenium. - Save this as
local_webdriver.pyand runpython local_webdriver.py.
from selenium import webdriver
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
This uses a locally available Chrome browser and lets Selenium Manager handle much of driver resolution in standard environments. If your environment requires an explicit driver or browser path, configure that according to the current binding documentation.

For a Python script that uses Grid remotely, the endpoint must be running and reachable; unlike a local Python session, remote use requires the Selenium server/Grid service. Selenium Python API documentation
What WebDriver BiDi adds
Classic WebDriver commands follow a request/response pattern: the client asks the remote end to do something and receives a result. WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket-based bidirectional channel so automation can receive and react to browser events, including network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. It complements rather than erases the classic command path. Selenium describes BiDi as a cross-browser replacement for Chrome DevTools Protocol, but that characterization does not guarantee identical feature coverage across browsers or language bindings; check current support before building a test around a particular event. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect WebDriver and Grid endpoints
A WebDriver endpoint can create and control browser sessions, so an exposed endpoint is not a harmless status page. The W3C WebDriver Working Draft dated May 28, 2026 suggests loopback-only connections by default to reduce the risk of arbitrary network machines creating sessions; it also discusses restricting accepted IP ranges. This is draft guidance, not a finalized normative requirement. For Grid, expose only the necessary entry point, restrict network access to intended clients, and follow current Selenium deployment guidance. W3C WebDriver Working Draft

Common setup and architecture problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser session fails before the first test command | Browser or driver could not be found, launched, or resolved | Confirm the browser is installed and compatible, check Selenium Manager network access and permissions, and review explicit driver paths or version pinning. |
| Remote session cannot connect | Incorrect Grid URL, unavailable endpoint, or blocked network path | Check the configured command executor URL, that Grid is running, and that the client can reach the exposed endpoint. |
| Grid returns no matching session capacity | No free slot matches the requested browser capabilities, or concurrency limits are reached | Compare request capabilities with Node slot stereotypes and max-session limits; add or free suitable capacity if needed. |
| Existing-session command goes to an unavailable Node | The Node owning the session may have stopped or become unreachable | Check Node health and Grid session state; start a new session after restoring capacity rather than assuming another Node owns the old session. |
| Grid placement seems stale during startup | The Distributor’s scheduling view may lag transient component state | Allow components to register and inspect current Grid state before treating a temporary mismatch as a permanent capability configuration error. |
| BiDi event subscription or behavior differs by browser | Implementation support varies by browser and binding | Verify current BiDi support for the exact browser, binding, and event you need. |
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot rather than interactive browser automation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its browser automation setup is not a substitute for Selenium tests that need to interact with page elements.
cURL example, with an access key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
