When was Selenium 4 released?
The Selenium project announced Selenium 4.0.0 on October 13, 2021. The project’s 2021 archive lists Selenium 4 Release Candidate 2 on October 2, followed by the 4.0 announcement. WebDriver capabilities
The release announcement highlights relative locators and new ways to handle tasks such as waiting for DOM changes and inspecting JavaScript errors. These capabilities are intended to make browser tests more expressive and help test code respond to changes or failures in the page.
Compatibility and upgrades
The project characterized upgrading as a straightforward dependency update for users relying on public APIs. That is not a guarantee that every codebase upgrades without changes: code using internal interfaces or deprecated APIs may need migration work. Selenium project author Simon Stewart wrote, “We’ve worked hard to ensure that the public APIs remain as stable as possible.” Check the specific binding’s APIs and your existing test suite rather than assuming internal usage is covered by that stability goal.

What changed in Selenium Grid?
Selenium 4 rebuilt Grid to support standalone, hub-and-node, and distributed deployments. The announcement also describes Kubernetes-oriented infrastructure and Docker container management, alongside a redesigned UI built over GraphQL, live VNC previews, and OpenTelemetry support. These changes matter most to teams operating shared browser-test infrastructure: select the deployment shape that matches how you run and scale tests, then validate the required container and observability integrations in your environment. The release announcement describes the Grid changes.
What does “Selenium 94” mean?
The number is ambiguous. One plausible historical connection is Selenium’s Ruby DevTools changelog: the selenium-devtools 0.94 entry added CDP 94 support and removed CDP 92 support. This makes “94” a possible reference to the protocol version supported by that Ruby DevTools release, not a Selenium WebDriver major version. Should you upgrade or change your Grid setup?
- If your tests use public APIs: assess the binding dependency update and run your normal regression suite.
- If your tests depend on internals or deprecated APIs: identify those calls and review migration needs before upgrading.
- If you maintain Grid: decide whether standalone, hub-and-node, or distributed operation fits your deployment, and test any Docker, Kubernetes, VNC, or OpenTelemetry integration you intend to use.
The Selenium release category includes an entry for 4.49, but the available listing does not establish its release date or whether it is the newest version as of October 4, 2026. Check the dated release information before choosing a version; do not infer current status from an undated category result.
