Selenium 4 uses the W3C WebDriver protocol and no longer supports the legacy JSON Wire Protocol. If your Selenium 3 code already followed W3C conventions, the upgrade may require little or no protocol-related change. Check your capabilities and any interaction tests using the Actions API: these are the areas most likely to expose migration problems.
What changed in Selenium 4?
Selenium 3 supported both the emerging W3C WebDriver standard and Selenium’s older JSON Wire Protocol. Selenium 4 standardized on W3C WebDriver and removed support for the legacy protocol. That means a client or test setup that depends on JSON Wire Protocol compatibility or translation can fail when it connects through a Selenium 4 binding or Grid.
The change is about communication between the local WebDriver client and the remote browser-driving end. The W3C standard defines the remote end’s HTTP wire protocol and maps HTTP endpoints to commands; it does not require every language binding to implement its local API in the same way. Will Selenium 3 code work after upgrading?
The Selenium project says code that is W3C-compliant in the latest Selenium 3 should work as expected in Selenium 4, and that the protocol implementation generally should not affect end users. This is not a guarantee that every Selenium 3 project upgrades without edits: outdated capability formats, deprecated APIs, or protocol-dependent infrastructure can still prevent a session from starting or change interactions.

Transition details also varied by language binding and Grid version. Selenium’s account of the removal explains that Ruby, JavaScript, and .NET removed handshake code for Selenium 4.0, while Python and Java/Grid transition details came later; remaining legacy support was removed in Java Selenium 4.9 and Grid 4.9. If an older client relies on Grid translation, check the exact client and Grid versions rather than assuming Selenium 4.9 will provide it. See Selenium’s legacy protocol support timeline.
What to review when migrating
- Upgrade the binding and dependencies. Follow the official instructions for your language binding and update related Selenium components to compatible versions.
- Use the binding’s Options class. Where applicable, replace deprecated Desired Capabilities patterns with the browser-specific Options class recommended by your binding.
- Check capability names and structure. Use
browserName,browserVersionrather thanversion, andplatformNamerather thanplatformfor the standard capability names. - Namespace vendor-specific settings. Browser and cloud-provider capabilities that are not standard WebDriver capabilities must use the vendor’s documented prefix or options namespace. A malformed or unsupported capability can cause session creation to fail.
- Run interaction tests that use Actions. If clicks, key input, or pointer interactions behave differently, investigate the Actions usage and the test assumptions rather than attributing every change to the wire protocol alone.
- Check legacy translation dependencies. If a Selenium 2 or older Selenium 3 client connects through a Grid, verify the compatibility of that exact client/Grid combination and remove reliance on JSON Wire Protocol translation.

Diagnosing common upgrade failures
Session creation fails with an invalid capabilities error
Inspect the capabilities sent at session creation. Replace legacy names such as version and platform with browserVersion and platformName where those standard capabilities apply. Put cloud or browser-vendor settings in the namespace documented by that provider, and prefer the binding’s Options API.
A test cannot connect through Selenium Grid
Check the client binding version and Grid version together. Older clients can depend on protocol conversion that was removed at different times across bindings and Grid; Selenium’s chronology identifies Java Selenium and Grid 4.9 as the point where remaining legacy support was removed. Upgrade the client to use W3C WebDriver rather than expecting Selenium 4 Grid to translate JSON Wire Protocol requests.

Actions-based interactions fail or behave differently
Review the Actions sequence and its assumptions, then run the affected interaction tests against the upgraded binding and browser setup. Selenium’s migration guidance specifically flags Actions as an area to review; it does not imply that every failure has one universal protocol fix.
WebDriver BiDi is a separate development
WebDriver BiDi is related to WebDriver but is not another name for the classic W3C WebDriver protocol. Selenium describes BiDi as a bidirectional protocol using WebSocket communication to support browser events. The Selenium 4 migration from JSON Wire Protocol concerns classic WebDriver session commands; adopting BiDi is a separate decision. See Selenium’s WebDriver documentation.
